before noon. Dad. drove over after dinner and helped me put the straw off. He said Frank was having trouble with the binder and had come over with Dad. to see Bill Donald and find out what was wrong. Dad. also wanted to find out from Bill how much gravel it took to build a water trough as Shoff has hauled him a couple of loads now. After we put the straw off and Dad. left I started to cut the alfalfa and got about 8 rounds cut but quit early and went down to band concert. I got a ride down with Charlie & Nellie Innes as they brought Lil. Ward otherwise known as Mrs. Leamon Turner out to see Marj. After band concert Harry Moon felt that it would be right & just to blow in the fifteen dollars which the band got for going to Jarvis as it was found money. They weren't engaged to go but their presence along with the rest of the Dover people turned the Jarvis carnival from a very tame affair into a great success so the committee forced them to accept the 3 x 5s. Cpnsequently we all repaired to Geo. Robinson's and had a glass of 4 - 4 after which Geo. treated us to another glass of the same. I rode home as far as the Winding Hill with the Lemmon's Carl. said he forgot all about going to Jarvis after he had decided himself not to go. Still very hot.
Thursday August 20th
I finished cutting the alfalfa this fore noon and got part way around the little timothy meadow by the school house with the scythe I don't know whether I will ever get it cut or not as it is so thick in the bottom I am sure I could not cut it with the mower and it will make a big job to do with a scythe. I went over to see Eph. Innes for a few minutes. He is nearly through painting the school house. They have had quite a time over it and now there is dissention in the section. Bill Donald got the paint in the first place with the sanction of the Board. and got white lead & oil and Eph put it on. Nothing was said until he got the belfry & the dormers on the north roof painted {illegible scored out} 2 coats and had to just about hang on with his teeth to do it, then Harvey Shand decided that he didn't like the white. Everybody else appeared to be satisfied but Harvey thought that clear white was awful and wanted some colour he didn't care what, so finally he went down town and got some more paint and poor old Eph had to go over it all again and now instead of fresh, clean, harmonious white the school is trimmed with yellow and an ugly dark brown consequently Bill Donald is mad at Harvey Shand.
