got over home I put my cockrels from the bags into a crate and while I was at it one escaped. Tim and I chased him out around the barn but he lit out at such speed across the orchard that we couldn't begin to follow him so let him go. The last we saw of him he was half way across the ploughed field north of the orchard. What will become of him I don't know but I suppose someone will shoot him if he doesn't freeze to death. That just left me eleven to take over to Jack. After dinner Frank and I bagged up another fifty bushels of oats and then had to change the box from the sleighs to the waggon as what little snow there was on the road has gone off to-day. Jonas came along as we were loading the oats and he was bound for Jack's too, to collect his wages for dehorning some cattle so we all went over to-gether. I weighed my cockrels up and they weighed 34 lbs and then we dumped Franks oats in the feed bin at the Long house, but as Jack was down town none of us got our money. We all thought we would catch him at home to-day. Chris said he would get my chicken money for me. Enah got a letter from Dad. to-day saying he hoped to leave New York to-day and get home sometime to-morrow. Fine day, more like the end of March than the end of January.
