snowing this morning but quieted down later and got bright, and it has been quite mild all day. I walked over home just before dinner and found Dad. there feeling rather tough after his trip. He and Dick arrived last night on the 5 o'clock car. Dick had given Dad an entertaining time in New York but the city and change has been too much for him. He has a bad cold and indigestion. Dad. says New York has changed completely since he was there twenty years ago. Then he thought that if forced to live in a city, it would be the ideal one but now he couldn't be persuaded to live there on any terms. He was thankful to get out of it alive. His ideas of the people seem to have undergone a change too as he seemed terribly shocked at their actions over there. His trip was highly satisfactory as Aunt Hattie agreed not to fight. We were all sure she would agree and she told Dad. she would have agreed not to even if she didn't get a cent out of it. It was too bad that Dad's present to her couldn't have been a surprise. Mr. Parks told him that after the court proceedings Manning had studied the thing up and found an old judgment of a similar case and Aunt Hattie would not have had a chance at all. He said that Gavin Symonds was he thought very sorry he had mentioned the subject as he had no idea it would cause so much trouble and Roper & Whatly were disgusted. Mr. Parks says he is a young counsel and thought he was doing some thing clever. The fight now is just between Dad. & Harry B. and depends on the decision of the Name & Arms clause. Mr. Parks is quite confident though and says all will be over and Dad. declared heir at law by the first of March, - but - we shall see.
