SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 1872.
indistinct one and of which I have little recollection, only
I remember him in the short "Fustian Jacket" and Pants of
the same material which was then the invariable dress
of the "Coarse Linen Weaver" - I remember my Father going to
Kinfauns and the pleasure we all felt when John was
duly apprenticed to the "Gardening Trade" for it was not
then accounted a "Profession" - But it seemed then to be the object
of his highest ambition and he gave his whole soul for a season
to it - became an enthusiastic Botanist - and at the Annual
Horticultural Show held in the "Fair City" came off as Second
Class Prizeman for a "Bouquet" - and First Class for "Dried
Specimens of the Native Flora". The Local Journal adding in an
encouraging tone to the report "That John Wright was only a
Two Years Apprentice". The fact of seeing his name in print
seemed to us, as several steps up the Ladder of fame already,
I saw little of John during these three years, but under the
guidance of Revd Mr McLaggan Parish Minister and
Mr Stewart Schoolmaster, He seemed to have prosecuted
his studies to some advantage, several months before his
Apprenticeship closed it was rumored he was to leave the
Trade and go to College, this was in 1839 - Father and all
his best friends tried to dissuade him from the rash venture,
He had no money and Father was unable to help, but he had
friends aiding and abetting that we knew not of -
Mr Ross his "Sunday School Teacher" earnestly reasoned on the
difficult undertaking and the all but impossibility of his
being able to persevere and obtain a Standing at College
