that knew them then, knew them, "no more for ever" - I remember -
something broke up the discussion before it came to its natural
conclusion, and neither party was exactley satisfied. A newspaper
controversy was the result - in which stronger language was used
than was either seemly or charitable - Daniel McIntosh the little
knock-kneed schoolmaster of Woodside (a Baptist of the old school)
taking a leading part - however the Churchmen proud of their
young champion who in the language of their opponents had got
"his hands clear of the trade" determined on a Testimonial -
And I have no doubt that Dr Wright of Southampton, whatever
may now be his opinions of the merits of the controversy, looks
back with the highest pleasure, on that summer evening, when
his old School fellows, and companions at the loom, met and
under the guidance of James Strachan, presented him with
a handsome "Silver Watch & Chain" both as a mark of esteem
for the individual and also as an appreciation of the "fearless
exponent" of the cause which they held so dear -
But dark days were now lowering over the "Porter Lodge of

our "Mother" took ill after harvest - and was bedfast - during
the Winter he made one hasty visit during her illness and
the next was to her funeral in March 1860, though remembering
