weather reports and lectures from the U.S.A. Oliver's set is a small one, one tube, but he got messages from as far a way as Denver. There were just two pair of earphones so we took turns in listening and took them apart so that two could listen with one set by just using one ear. We clapped it on Harry B's ear once or twice and he seemed very much impressed. Charlie Shand came down for awhile and seemed to enjoy some candy that Marj. had made more than the radio which was not so new to him as it was to the rest of us, he having heard George Duncan's the other night. The music through it sounded very much like that of a phonograph to me and while the announcements were very distinct I couldn't understand any recitations I heard at all. I was glad to hear it for the novelty and marvel of it, for it truly is marvelous to have concrete proof that the voice of a man speaking a thousand miles away is carried here through the air and a simple little contrivance like this can pick it up. It makes a person realize that the laws of Nature are incomprehensible and unlimited and wonder what next the accumulating knowledge of man will reveal to his puny mind. The music seemed to get a little clearer as the evening went on and Oliver kept trying to get new stations, till I who had eaten too much candy was beginning to feel sick and Marj. and Ina were getting very tired. It was long after midnight when Oliver closed the thing up and disconected it and then I had to hook up and take Ina home. She was bound to walk but I wouldn't let her after keeping her here till that hour. We all drove to the Winding Hill and the boys walked on home from there. I got home and to bed somewhere about three o'clock feeling very sick and satisified to the satiation point with radio. Unlike Harvey Evans I don't feel that I would be any happier if I owned one I would much sooner save my money and buy a piano and give the kids music lessons, but I suppose they won't practice and will beg for a radio set.
