[This page, 92, and the following page, 93, display an original letter written to Toby from Mr. Parks. The original letter was folded in half and written on both sides. Toby inserted this letter into his diary.

However when the letter was digitized it was laid out and copied across 2 pages which means the order of the letter has become out of sequence, i.e. Page 92 RHS; Page 93 LHS; Page 93 RHS and Page 92 LHS.

My dear Toby,

As I have written to all the other folks I thought I would drop you a line. Am awfully sorry that I could not get a final decesion these Sittings of the Court but I suppose it was too much to expect from the old Master. He has a good deal of authority & you have to humour these fellows if you want to get on as they can make things very unpleasant if you upset them. I have had one or two tussels with

him but we are still very friendly. He wished me yesterday a pleasant holiday & said he was sorry he could not make his Certificate these Sittings but would do all he could to help next Sittings. He gave me an appointment on the 13th Oct, the day after he begins work again & another on the 24th when we hope to clear all questions up so that his Clerk can draw the Certificate which will be in favour of your Dad. He expressed his own satisfaction with the evidence but wants me to clear up one or two little things if I can. This I am now proceeding to do.

There is no question as to the result & I want you to persuade your Father to take things quietly & not work so hard. I can let him have some money. I would suggest him employing a man to help him so that he can take things easier. I think you can safely reckon on having money for the new Barns so you can amuse yourselves in seeing what you will do to improve the houses & farms & keep an eye open to purchase more land if you want it. I expect your Father will now consider what he will do

in the way of new Barns & house or alterations to the present one. You will all have to have things very nice but dont give up work as thats a source of health & pleasure when you have not to worry about want of money. You will have to come over with Mrs Barrett & see the old Country. Perhaps you would like to settle here but I expect the land of one's birth holds one. Well there is nothing to worry about & it is only a matter of time. Glad the Tree is flourishing Hope Mrs Barrett the children & you are all well & that poor old {Frank?} is better. Tell Tim to write to me & tell me how his stock is getting on
