hadn't time to harness the team and get a load of ice before dinner so we bagged up a grist. Quint came over just after dinner and he and I tied a pulley to a little 2 x 2 in the ceiling of the ice house to pull up the last load of ice as the ice house is so full there isn't room to fill the hole at the door from the inside Frank took his grist to the mill and went on down to get the load of ice which we managed to get into the ice house by the aid of the pulley without very much trouble. Frank and I then went down to the mill and got the chop but were delayed down there. Arthur Preston came down after his mail and I conversed with him. Some skallywag had played Arthur trick, by which I had some fun with him. Arthur having heard that some of the dairymen around were knocking calves in the head thought he might get one cheap and veal it so put a sign up on the mill door Wanted - calf to veal - A.W.Preston; and some Lake Shore humourist hit on the brilliant idea of changing calf to girl and the "v" in veal to f. If it had been anyone else but Arthur, it would have been a flat joke, but to see Arthurs dismay and chagrin was funny. He of course tore it down feeling no doubt that on such an occasion it would be an advantage & relief if he could only say damn it. It was about five by the time Frank and I got back with the chop & got it unloaded and then I hooked to the cutter and Quint, Harry B and I drove down to Auntys in a nasty snowstorm. I didn't go into house down there but left Harry B very cheerfully waving goodbye to me and I got home as fast as possible stopping at the farm with some groceries for Enah & to load on a bag of oats for myself. Very stormy & to-night a howling blizzard.

Wednesday February 10th

It has been very cold with a strong east wind to-day but sunny. About five o'clock the wind went down entirely, but to-night there is a west wind and it is very cold. I didn't do anything outside but chores I sat around and read and sgushed flannels for Marj. I cleaned the loose litter out of the old hen pen just after dinner and put fresh straw in. Bill Donald was in to say that Ina wouldn't be here this week. To-night I started to walk in to a hockey match but got a ride in from Art Quanbury and a ride home from town. The Juniors who have only lost one game all season & so won their group were playing Kitchner to-night in the first home & home game, but our boys were out-classed. There was no score the first period but K scored 0 in the 2nd & 3 in the 3rd Final score was 8-0. Dover did some nice work though.
