Just as Marj. got back Art Quanbury. came after me, he was driving Jack's car and had Billy Mills. They had to go to Marburg to vote so by the time they took me out to Wiggins and then went down to Marburg and back it was getting on to noon. They hated to vote agains John S. but some of the prohibitionists had got them to promise to vote dry as they call voting for the O.T.A. There are good many in the same position. No-one has any critisism to make at Jack or the Government as a whole as they have to admit that it is about the best one we have ever had and they know that Jack is better qualified to represent us than any other man in Norfolk, but they are either too pig-headed or too blind to see the harm the O.T.A. is doing and are afraid Government Control will do more. Dad. supported Jack although he still has faith in the O.T.A. Enah of course does the same as he does, and Marj. I guess has had her eyes opened since the plebesite was taken and she paired off with me on the question, and she also realizes what a foolish thing it would be to turn down Jack Martin. For my part I have always been opposed to the O.T.A. on principal and so voted for Jack with a clear consience. This after noon we all went to town as Marj. had to get some provisions. She went up town and the rest of us stayed at Aunty's where Dad. was unpacking his books. He Quint & I staggered in from the barn with one big case just as I got there so I helped unpack it. It is a wonderful collection of beautiful books, all heavily and luxuriously bound in leather and dating back to the 17th & 18th centuries. Some of then are enormous, a set of Shakespeare for instance with very good steel engravings each volume measuring in the neighborhood of 30 x 24 inches. We came home before dark in the face of a bitterly cold wind. It has been getting colder all day and to-night the temperature must be around zero with a gale blowing. |
