It froze very hard last night and has been bitterly cold all day, clear & sunny but a north breeze and a biting one I didn't do much outside but chores, but got up a shelf for Marj's plants in tghe east parlour window. About four o'clock I drove down town and got some groceries, and some potatoes at the farm. Harry Dyer died this after noon, was taken ill early tis morning.

Thursday January 13th

I was late again this morning and Tupper came over before I was finished milking to dump the buckwheat and then he wanted me to go over to look at some lumber he had and didn't want to haul up to his other place. We were over there till after noon and I got over 500 ft. of 2 inch oak, chestnut & pine, some of it for 2½ cts a foot and some for 3. He hauled it over here for me and had dinner here. It was nearly three when we finished dinner so I didn't get much else but chores done. Mabel and Ina came to tea to-night and stayed all night so that Marj. and I could go down to Aunty's for the evening. We had a great time down there looking at the books and helping to sort them out into sets. Huby and Win were there and Dad. Enah & Tim, but they went home early. We stayed till nearly midnight. Huby was in a very jovial mood and had discovered amongst the books a vulgar dictionary containing the definitions of word & terms used in vulgar parlance but not suitable for polite conversation. He was delighted with it of course. He wanted to know what the name of the Gypsy or Romany language was and that kept Roy and Aunty Alice interested all evening trying to get it past the "tip of their tongue". Huby went over his old repertoire of stories of how he & Clarence used to tease Fa. and although we have all heard them a dozen times or more we laughed at him harder than ever. Altogether we had a most enjoyable time. Cloudy & mild all day snowing to-night.

Friday January 14th

Didn't get much but chores done this morning. Frank and Jonas came over this after noon and helped me cut a door in the west end of the barn for a calf pen. They didn't stay long as Jack Walker brought Aunty, Aunty Alice Roy, Dick, Vernon & Huby out and they were here all the after noon. Jack came back for them at five o'clock. The kids had a whale of a time especially with Huby. Mild.
