Thursday November 26th

This was a very cloudy morning with a cold north east wind and the ground frozen solid but as we had planned to go to town to-day we went. Marj. got very cold going in but the children didn't seem to mind it. We got to Aunty's a little before dinner time and so Marj. got thawed out before dinner Quint & Tim were there at noon Quint having just arrived home from the North with his deer last night. After dinner Marj. & I went up town, she to peddle her eggs & get her groceries, and I went to the bank to deposit the money Dad. gave me for the heifer I went up to Reynold's and renewed my subscription for the "Mail & Empire" and also sent renewals to "The Breeders Gazette" & the "International Book Review" When I got back to Aunty's Quint was just getting ready to go up home to get his deer and take it over to the slaughter house so I went with him. She was a nice big doe 110 lbs I think Quint said. She had a fawn with her & Quint shot it too, but didn't bring it home. It strikes me as a terribly perverted sense of "sport" that takes men hundreds of miles up into that wilderness at this time of year for the sole object of tracking down and killing from ambush one of those beautiful creatures so full of active life that do nobody harm and that haven't the least chance to defend themselves. I suppose it is the only chance the old barbarous instinct to take life has of cropping out under modern conditions, but it seems to me even our barbarous ancestors had to work themselves into a fury before they went on the warpath and didn't do it in cold blood. I never have the lust to kill except when I am mad, but I don't get mad at wild animals that stay where they belong and mind their own business.
