the ice finally began to move today. mail carrier came today for bag but was unable to cross. a large propeller went down the bay today,jamming through the loose ice slowly,but I think made Kingston.
Wednesday, May 20th 1879 weather still beautiful and dry,will soon need another shower.barge came today to load wheate. a new feature of the tariff cropped out today, the customs officer visited island and collected the 20 per cent duty on 209 bus.passing to& fro work to Ogdensburg, bringing down an additional curse on J.A Mcd,and a further damming of the N.P.
Wednesday, May 27th 1879 a whole week has passed and no material change we had a light rain yesterday, but all is again dried up and parched. getting our potato land ready for planting. have sold my little house to the Methodist and will give possession on July 1st. what will become of Dr.Middleton. hard times will tell soon. but today he has gone to the city to be in time to welcome the princess &Marquis of Lorne,oh my county, what I suffer for thee! did ever poor Charlie Allen of Elora reckon that his daughter would be dragged around the world at the heels of suchman as W.G.M.alas,we know not what we are born to. and he may yet be successful in some other walk of life, although I doubt it-at least I wish him
