Lumbar Puncture.

Since in children the spinous processes of the lumbar vertebra are short and extend nearly directly backward, the puncture is made most readily in the median line, close to the under border of the spinous process of the upper vertebra of the chosen space. In adults, because of the anatomical differences in the spine, and because of the interspinous ligament, there is more room for approach if puncture is made to one side of the median line, and at a level with the lower part of the spinous process of the vertebra next above the space used.
