Season 1930
Apr 10th Arrived home this afternoon weather is fine. Alan broke his arm on arrival.
April 11th Men working at hotbeds they are just finishing planting and they look pretty good.
April 12th. Unloading 5th and last car {railway car} of manure.
Sunday Apr 13th. Fine & warm home all day alone
Mon Apr. 14th Getting ready to spray pears 7 gals {gallons} Emulsion to a tank every thing out of
order only got 2 tanks on.
Apr 15. Very cold & windy froze ½ in. {inch} ice got one tank of spray on.
Apr 16 still cold & windy still spraying. managed to get done but very windy.
Apr 17 Cold & cloudy rain in the morning. Nelson ploughing afternoon.
Apr. 18th Good Friday fine & warm topping berry bushes and started uncovering strawberries
Apr 19th Uncovering strawberries look fair. but rows very light
Apr 20th Easter Sunday Bright but cold. strong East wind had Geo Hammonds for supper
April 21st. Raining this am. turned sick at noon. Dysentery I guess and every body with colds too.
Apr 22nd. Very cold. uncovering S.B. {strawberries}
Apr 23rd Cold this a.m. froze an inch of ice. Thermometer 26 at 8 oclock.. at 10am. ground covered
with snow. some real squalls. Drawing manure off strawberries
Apr 24 Still cold froze ice again this a.m.
April 25 started uncovering Strawberries again stopped a few days it was so cold & frosty. feeling
punk. sick Stomach.
Apr 26th A little milder today. Nelson ploughing. men uncovering strawberries, myself doing nothing
feel no good.
Apr 27th Sunday home alone all day. weather fine
April 28th Smith started work again. uncovering strawberries yet.
April 29th Fine & warm started Transplanting Tomatoes in plant boxs.
April 30th Finished planting tomatoes in boxs (4400) weather fine & warm
April 30 May 1st. Transplanting tomatoes yet. had a big shower this morning. had an Examination by
the Dr. says to quit work for awhile
May 2nd Very windy today planting tomatoes and also planting cukes more showers & a thunder
storm in the afternoon, with hail as large as marbles
May 3rd Strawberry plants arrived 12000 cost $51.50 for the plants $10.30 duty & $22 70 express
Total $84 50. they look pretty good.
May 4th Sunday. fine & warm
May 5th. Planting strawberries with the planter done about 10 000 today. very warm need rain badly
too. Cut 2 bskts {baskets} asparagus for the first
May 6th Planted out Cabbages 6000 this morning. very warm & dry, a few of the early plums coming
into blossom, strawberries planted yesterday look cooked. Planted 20 lbs Davis Wax Beans & put 1
ton of 4-16-8 Fertilizer on Raspberries and cut 8 bskts Asparagus.
May 7th & 8th & 9th. still digging & Planting strawberries. also planted Early corn & pumpkins. nearly
done up. got two teeth pulled.
May 10th Finished planting strawberries about 6 acres.
May 11th Sunday fine and warm
May 12th. Finished transplanting tomatoes & planted 2 ozs Cauliflower seed & 4 ozs Bush
Vegetable marrows.
May 13th Watering hotbeds & started to hoe strawberries
May 14th Light showers will do a lot of good men clipped horses drew wood & took sprayer to get
overhauled
May 15th Still a few showers hoeing strawberries
May 16th Hoeing strawberrries
17th Colder today planting Potatoes & replanting strawberries filling up.
May 18th Sunday cloudy & cold. all day.
May 19th. Rain all day biggest this spring. also very cold. about 40 & 45 all day.
May 20th Clear and a little milder. replanting strawberries yet. thousands dead of the first planting,
bad roots I guess. and warm weather then
May 21st. Fine & warm men hoeing strawberries
May 22 Very warm today hoeing strawberries
May 23rd Warm about 90. Started planting out tomatoes.
May 24th a big change Very cool today planting out tomatoes.
May 25th. Sunday cold about 55 this afternoon. 32 at 530 this a.m. with a light white frost.
May 26th Planting tomatoes very cold light frosts I guess no damage here. tried to start spraying no
good no pressure.
May 27th. still cold. planting tomatoes & got on 6 tanks of spray. a little milder tonight. looks like rain.
May 28th. cold & showery. spraying & hoeing strawberries
May 29th 30th & 31st. Windy & cold. frosts nearly every morning but not heavy to do any damage
here. Spraying & hoeing strawberries. 27 tanks on now about 3 more to finish. seems to be lots of
cherries and plums and quite a lot of pears
June 1st Sunday warmer but very windy from South west.
June 2nd Finished spraying and planting Tomatoes about 18000 in all.
June 3rd Planted out about 12000 peppers. Very warm and windy
June 4th. Planting cukes marrows & peppers still very warm. finished planting about 15000 peppers
in all.
June 5th Men all hoeing cultivating & ploughing Very warm over 90 had an examination at the Ham.
{Hamilton} Clinic no report yet.
June 6th Cooler today a few light showers. Hoeing new strawberries lots of them dead they say.
June 7th Very cold West wind & cloudy.
June 8th Sunday. cool.
June 9th. Hoeing & cultivating
June 10th Showery. nearly all day. & cool.
June 11th Bright but cool got 3 more teeth pulled. picked first strawberries 4 x 36's sold at 13¢

June 12th. Fine & warmer planted out Cauliflower yesterday. ground in good shape but plants very
small.
June 13th Picked 14 x 36 SBerries {strawberries} sold at - 10 at 20¢ 3 @ 18¢ 1 at 17¢
June 14th. Fine and warm, men hoeing bushes, Blackberries in full bloom now just white. am afraid
that they will be no good though
June 15 Sunday fine & warm.
June 16. A few light showers in the night and this morning picked strawberries in the rain Sent 21
crates to Toronto by our truck at 10 oclock. Sold at 10 at 25¢ 6 at 20¢ 5 at 23¢ 24 crates at noon. 6
at 18¢ and down to 10¢. 15 crates at night Sold 7 cts. 63 crates in all.
June 17th. Big slump in Berries down to 7¢ pint in Toronto.
June 18th Sold here today. 102 crates to Scott at 8¾¢ & 25 to Davidson at 8¢
June 19th. Showery & cold only picked 55 x 36 SBerries today. Sold at 8¾ cts.
June 20th cool again picked 111 crates SBerries.
June 21st. Dean & his boys out to stay a couple of days.
June 22nd Sunday Fine and warm.
June 23rd Our biggest picking of berries 196 & 27 crates
June 24th no picking today
June 25th. Only 96 crates SBerries today and nearly done picked 2 bskts {baskets} Richmond
cherries & 2 of white Sweets Ripe very early this year
June 26th showery about noon. continued most of the day. Picked 7 bskts Richmonds at 60¢ and 5
white Sweets at 75¢
June 27. Cold & cloudy & high winds. Picked 68 crates strawberries 20 bskts Richmonds cherries 14
bskts Sweets 75¢ whites 60¢
June 28th. Fine & cool. spraying cherries again got on 6½ tanks
June 29th. Sunday Fine & warmer. went to La Salle Park for a couple of hours
June 30 Very warm nothing picking on account of the holiday tomorrow men still spraying takes 11
tanks to go over cherries
July 1st Picked 42 crates strawberries 55 x 11 Richmond cherries sold Scott at 57¢ 11 x 6 Sweets.
Big rain about 1 oclock. lasted nearly all afternoon Pickers all soaked.
July 2nd Picked 77 Richmond cherries sold 45 up north 55¢ & shipped balance to Toronto Sold at 30
to {40?} cts per 11.
July 3 Picked 30 Richmonds & 10 sweets today.
July 4 Finished Richmond cherries had 205 x 11 Baskets. Cut 6 crates Cabbages sold at 90¢ 20
Black cherries at 70¢
July 5. no picking today. men hoeing old strawberry beds. a little warmer looks like rain today. picked
45 pints Rasps yesterday for the first sold at 25¢ pint.

July 14th. Picked 416 x 11 cherries today 33 beans & 6 crates Cabbages.
July 15th Picked 314 x 11 cherries and 22 doz Cabb. 14 x11 peppers 21 crates Rasps. Sold at 13¢
July 16th. Picked 409 cherries today getting cheap Sold 150 to Scott at 62¢. 105 Bullock at 65¢
Balance north at 80¢ Sold 40 doz. Cabbages at 35 cts a doz.
July 17 Only picked 208 cherries today. & 21 crates Rasps. 19 Beans. 3 crates Cabb.
July 18 only picked 77 cherries shipped north a few at 80¢ but mostly 75¢ 5 cabb. & 11 beans
picked one six quart of Tomatoes & 1 x 11 Cucumbers for the first. 11 days ahead of first picking last
year. weather very warm.
July 19th Sat. picked 13 crates Rasps. 106 x 11 cherries 65¢ 90 x 6 qts for Davidson 45¢ 25 for
Scott 35¢
July 20 Sunday very warm was down to Hicks for tea Uncle Dave arrived yesterday for a week.
July 21 very busy 465 x 11 cherries from 67½ to 75¢ 20 beans 40 and 45. 8 cukes 75¢ 8 cabb 50¢
July 22. Picked 33 crates Rasps 223 x 11 cherries today.
July 23 Picked 2 & 3 x 11 cherries at 65. 67 & 75¢. 170 x 6's @ 42½ 15 crates Cabb 50¢ 11 Cukes
60 12 beans 40. worked till nearly eight oclock.
July 24 Picked 175 cherries & 14 crates Rasps. Very warm.
“ 25 Very warm & dry only picked 59 cherries & a few beans & cukes strawberry crop totals was
374 x 36 pints & 412 x 275 quarts about half as many as last year and prices lower 12½ at Uptons
last year and 11¢ this year

July 27th. Very warm had. Grandma B. out for a bskt of cherries
July 28th Terrible hot & dry plants all wilting picked cherries a few Rasps. 21 bskts {baskets}

marrow also first Sweet peppers
July 29th Cooler today. but no rain. a big turnover at yesterday’s Dominion Election. Last term the
Liberals had 120 Seats. this year time Conservatives have 138 seats. Was at Mr Robt Allen's funeral
some crowd there. he died suddenly Saturday morning
July 30. no rain yet & very warm picked about 40 tomatoes sold at 90 75¢
July 31st Picked one crate Black Berries for the first & 20 x 11 cherries
Aug 1st. Had a run on Cabbages today 53 crates. for Scott & Bullock. at 50¢ crate & 80 toms
{tomatoes} at 75¢ north & 60 ct to dealers. 29 cukes 55¢ Very hot & dry yet. Finished picking

crates.
Aug 3rd Sunday Very warm had Stan Blair over and went for a picnic

Aug 5th no rain yet every thing getting worse. Tomatoes, worst we ever had rough & dry rot. picked
177 bskts 36 plums 13 bskts apples & 17 Hampers apples.

Oct 7th to 15th. weather very fine & warm. flowers all in bloom yet. Fruit & Vegetables all gone only
peppers & pumpkins no sale for either. had my tonsils burnt out on Sat. Oct 11th. throat very sore
yet.
Oct 18th Change in the weather cold with gales from the West and first snow flurries of the season.
Oct 19th & 20th cold with strong winds snow flurries. regular hurricanes reported Sat & Sun. with
snow some places 2 ft deep.
Oct 20th to 27th weather cool & cloudy some frosts at night. no rain.
Oct 27th to Nov 5th. mostly fair. white frosts at night. some fogs turning colder tonight
Nov 5th to Nov 11th. weather fine & moderately warm. work about all done Smith pruning ploughing
all done. Shipped 18 crates Cauliflowers on Nov 6th. Sold at $2 00 crate also shipped 75 peppers
(not sold yet.) not much sale for them last lot. Sold from 25 to 50¢ bskt. 50¢ was for a few Large Red
Sweets
Nov 12th to 24th. Weather mild. cloudy & very foggy
Nov 25 turning colder work about all done pruning nearly done.
Nov 26 & 27th very cold only 7 above zero this a.m Smiths unloading 2nd car {railway car} manure
for strawberry covering.
Nov 26 to 29th. Cold & frosty
Nov 30 Sunday Had Chapmans out for the day weather rainy.
Dec 1st & 2nd Very cold just 4 from zero at 830 this a.m.
Dec 4th Milder again unloading manure & covering strawberries
Dec 5th. Mild & Foggy. had Havana Cuba on Radio for an hour. real good
Dec 6th mild & rainy. Sat up late Had KFI Los Angeles at 130 am. also Had Denver. Florida. Texas.
Oklahoma & St Petersburg Florida heard Amos & Andy there at 7 oclock had 53 Stations tonight
Dec 13th. weather fine & not very cold. Smith quit work tonight
Dec 15th & 16th Very cold about zero the last two nights.
Dec 20th milder the last few days finished last car of manure today.
Dec 24th. weather has been a little cooler. had a couple of inches of snow today.
Dec 25th. Christmas Day down to Johns for the day. it was a lovely day fair. not too cold and a
couple of inches of snow on the ground. light south winds blowing.
Dec 26 & 27th. milder & cloudy snow all gone again.
Dec 30th. Fair & moderately cold went to Hamilton bot a goose. 32¢ a lb 14¼ lbs. $4.50
Dec 31st. Colder today started snowing about noon.

Season 1930
Apr 10th Arrived home this afternoon weather is fine. Alan broke his arm on arrival.
April 11th Men working at hotbeds they are just finishing planting and they look pretty good.
April 12th. Unloading 5th and last car {railway car} of manure.
Sunday Apr 13th. Fine & warm home all day alone
Mon Apr. 14th Getting ready to spray pears 7 gals {gallons} Emulsion to a tank every thing out of
order only got 2 tanks on.
Apr 15. Very cold & windy froze ½ in. {inch} ice got one tank of spray on.
Apr 16 still cold & windy still spraying. managed to get done but very windy.
Apr 17 Cold & cloudy rain in the morning. Nelson ploughing afternoon.
Apr. 18th Good Friday fine & warm topping berry bushes and started uncovering strawberries
Apr 19th Uncovering strawberries look fair. but rows very light
Apr 20th Easter Sunday Bright but cold. strong East wind had Geo Hammonds for supper
April 21st. Raining this am. turned sick at noon. Dysentery I guess and every body with colds too.
Apr 22nd. Very cold. uncovering S.B. {strawberries}
Apr 23rd Cold this a.m. froze an inch of ice. Thermometer 26 at 8 oclock.. at 10am. ground covered
with snow. some real squalls. Drawing manure off strawberries
Apr 24 Still cold froze ice again this a.m.
April 25 started uncovering Strawberries again stopped a few days it was so cold & frosty. feeling
punk. sick Stomach.
Apr 26th A little milder today. Nelson ploughing. men uncovering strawberries, myself doing nothing
feel no good.
Apr 27th Sunday home alone all day. weather fine
April 28th Smith started work again. uncovering strawberries yet.
April 29th Fine & warm started Transplanting Tomatoes in plant boxs.
April 30th Finished planting tomatoes in boxs (4400) weather fine & warm
April 30 May 1st. Transplanting tomatoes yet. had a big shower this morning. had an Examination by
the Dr. says to quit work for awhile
May 2nd Very windy today planting tomatoes and also planting cukes more showers & a thunder
storm in the afternoon, with hail as large as marbles
May 3rd Strawberry plants arrived 12000 cost $51.50 for the plants $10.30 duty & $22 70 express
Total $84 50. they look pretty good.
May 4th Sunday. fine & warm
May 5th. Planting strawberries with the planter done about 10 000 today. very warm need rain badly
too. Cut 2 bskts {baskets} asparagus for the first
May 6th Planted out Cabbages 6000 this morning. very warm & dry, a few of the early plums coming
into blossom, strawberries planted yesterday look cooked. Planted 20 lbs Davis Wax Beans & put 1
ton of 4-16-8 Fertilizer on Raspberries and cut 8 bskts Asparagus.
May 7th & 8th & 9th. still digging & Planting strawberries. also planted Early corn & pumpkins. nearly
done up. got two teeth pulled.
May 10th Finished planting strawberries about 6 acres.
May 11th Sunday fine and warm
May 12th. Finished transplanting tomatoes & planted 2 ozs Cauliflower seed & 4 ozs Bush
Vegetable marrows.
May 13th Watering hotbeds & started to hoe strawberries
May 14th Light showers will do a lot of good men clipped horses drew wood & took sprayer to get
overhauled
May 15th Still a few showers hoeing strawberries
May 16th Hoeing strawberrries
17th Colder today planting Potatoes & replanting strawberries filling up.
May 18th Sunday cloudy & cold. all day.
May 19th. Rain all day biggest this spring. also very cold. about 40 & 45 all day.
May 20th Clear and a little milder. replanting strawberries yet. thousands dead of the first planting,
bad roots I guess. and warm weather then
May 21st. Fine & warm men hoeing strawberries
May 22 Very warm today hoeing strawberries
May 23rd Warm about 90. Started planting out tomatoes.
May 24th a big change Very cool today planting out tomatoes.
May 25th. Sunday cold about 55 this afternoon. 32 at 530 this a.m. with a light white frost.
May 26th Planting tomatoes very cold light frosts I guess no damage here. tried to start spraying no
good no pressure.
May 27th. still cold. planting tomatoes & got on 6 tanks of spray. a little milder tonight. looks like rain.
May 28th. cold & showery. spraying & hoeing strawberries
May 29th 30th & 31st. Windy & cold. frosts nearly every morning but not heavy to do any damage
here. Spraying & hoeing strawberries. 27 tanks on now about 3 more to finish. seems to be lots of
cherries and plums and quite a lot of pears
June 1st Sunday warmer but very windy from South west.
June 2nd Finished spraying and planting Tomatoes about 18000 in all.
June 3rd Planted out about 12000 peppers. Very warm and windy
June 4th. Planting cukes marrows & peppers still very warm. finished planting about 15000 peppers
in all.
June 5th Men all hoeing cultivating & ploughing Very warm over 90 had an examination at the Ham.
{Hamilton} Clinic no report yet.
June 6th Cooler today a few light showers. Hoeing new strawberries lots of them dead they say.
June 7th Very cold West wind & cloudy.
June 8th Sunday. cool.
June 9th. Hoeing & cultivating
June 10th Showery. nearly all day. & cool.
June 11th Bright but cool got 3 more teeth pulled. picked first strawberries 4 x 36's sold at 13¢

June 12th. Fine & warmer planted out Cauliflower yesterday. ground in good shape but plants very
small.
June 13th Picked 14 x 36 SBerries {strawberries} sold at - 10 at 20¢ 3 @ 18¢ 1 at 17¢
June 14th. Fine and warm, men hoeing bushes, Blackberries in full bloom now just white. am afraid
that they will be no good though
June 15 Sunday fine & warm.
June 16. A few light showers in the night and this morning picked strawberries in the rain Sent 21
crates to Toronto by our truck at 10 oclock. Sold at 10 at 25¢ 6 at 20¢ 5 at 23¢ 24 crates at noon. 6
at 18¢ and down to 10¢. 15 crates at night Sold 7 cts. 63 crates in all.
June 17th. Big slump in Berries down to 7¢ pint in Toronto.
June 18th Sold here today. 102 crates to Scott at 8¾¢ & 25 to Davidson at 8¢
June 19th. Showery & cold only picked 55 x 36 SBerries today. Sold at 8¾ cts.
June 20th cool again picked 111 crates SBerries.
June 21st. Dean & his boys out to stay a couple of days.
June 22nd Sunday Fine and warm.
June 23rd Our biggest picking of berries 196 & 27 crates
June 24th no picking today
June 25th. Only 96 crates SBerries today and nearly done picked 2 bskts {baskets} Richmond

Oct 19th & 20th cold with strong winds snow flurries. regular hurricanes reported Sat & Sun. with
snow some places 2 ft deep.

Nov 25 turning colder work about all done pruning nearly done.
Nov 26 & 27th very cold only 7 above zero this a.m Smiths unloading 2nd car {railway car} manure
for strawberry covering.
Nov 26 to 29th. Cold & frosty
Nov 30 Sunday Had Chapmans out for the day weather rainy.
Dec 1st & 2nd Very cold just 4 from zero at 830 this a.m.
Dec 4th Milder again unloading manure & covering strawberries
Dec 5th. Mild & Foggy. had Havana Cuba on Radio for an hour. real good
Dec 6th mild & rainy. Sat up late Had KFI Los Angeles at 130 am. also Had Denver. Florida. Texas.
Oklahoma & St Petersburg Florida heard Amos & Andy there at 7 oclock had 53 Stations tonight
Dec 13th. weather fine & not very cold. Smith quit work tonight
Dec 15th & 16th Very cold about zero the last two nights.
Dec 20th milder the last few days finished last car of manure today.
Dec 24th. weather has been a little cooler. had a couple of inches of snow today.
Dec 25th. Christmas Day down to Johns for the day. it was a lovely day fair. not too cold and a
couple of inches of snow on the ground. light south winds blowing.
Dec 26 & 27th. milder & cloudy snow all gone again.
Dec 30th. Fair & moderately cold went to Hamilton bot a goose. 32¢ a lb 14¼ lbs. $4.50
Dec 31st. Colder today started snowing about noon.
