Jan 1st 1920. (Thursday)
Was busy all morning preparing for the annual dinner party. All the family came out. The baby (Bill.) Got very stormy in the afternoon. Had conundrums and favors for each of the guests. Played games with the children until 6.p.m. Got Mr Beattie to drive mother home about 5.30 p.m. Mr and Mrs Jenkins (New H. S. teacher) called and Clarence Halliday came over to say good bye. Spent the evening clearing up and trying to fix a costume for Dorothy for her masquerade dance next night. Dorothy went down to a dance at Bicher's Hall to dance the old year out. Had a sore knee. Write out my S. S. cards.
Jan. 2nd (Friday)
Was busy all day preparing for D's dance. Was like a moving day. Duncan came up to help decorate. Lights shaded with tissue paper (Green & red) and streamers confetti boxes fixed in electric light fixtures. Duncan stayed for dinner and until about 4 o'clock. Very stormy. Margaret

January 3rd (Saturday)
Spent large part of day cleaning up. In the afternoon took the S.S. Teachers around to Mrs Iver, Mrs. Ferguson, Irene Halliday - Mrs. Gillies - Mrs. McLean - Miss E. McLean - C.J. Halliday - M.A.H - Mrs. Irvine - . Came home and shovelled the Snow. Path very hardly

packed. Took me an hour and a half. Snowed hard all days. More snow than we have had for some years: Must be 4 feet deep. Called at Mr Kellerman's with Receipt for Mrs King flowers. Alivelda Smith (Johnston) and Viola Mair very cool to me because Dorothy did not invite them to her dance. small town - petty ideas. Put a tuck in D's dress and washed & ironed her collar and washed her brassiere.
January 4 (Sunday)
Very Cold day. Went to Church in the Morning and to S.S. Did not go to church in the evening as I had to help Dorothy pack her trunk. Edna, Mar. & Pearl were up to see Dot after church. 15° below zero at night. None of Charlie's family up. Mr. & Mrs. Tuer came up after church. Wrote to Clare and Nell. Slept inside 1st night this Winter.
January 5 (Monday)
Got up at 5.30 a.m. Charles did not get up. Went to the station with Dorothy who starts out for a new school adventure at Margaret Eaton School. Edna Halladay left

for Hamilton to begin life in Head Office of the Bank of Hamilton. Jack McDonald, Lindsay Milne & Roy Reid also went back to Toronto to school. Miss Evans ( H.S. Teacher) came off train. Walked around with her to Mrs. Dobie's. Worked at type writer for about four or five hours for Charles. Went down town for some Probate & Administration forms. Went to station for afternoon train to say good bye to Florence Halliday. Finished my typing and took it down to the office. After tea went over to M.A.'s to say good-bye to Mrs. Robt. Halliday who leaves on early train for Hamilton to see Bert who is in the sanatarium. From there she goes back to Ottawa. Margaret McLauchlan there. Charles went to High School Board Meeting and then called at M.A's for Me. Mr. Halliday came home on late train. About {noon?} Nell telephoned that Dorothy was not on train and had not arrived. Later telephoned to say that the Palmerston Limited had not waited for their train & she reached Toronto about 1.30. & was then (2 3 o'clock) at Nell's.

Rather disturbed hour and a half or more. Slept inside.
January 6 (Tuesday)
Cold Moderated some. Lovely out. Went downtown for Meat and Mrs Robt. Halliday (Who didn't go away after all) came into office and I walked up to M.A.'s with her and went on around the block to enjoy the nice day. Tidied up Dorothy's room and put away masquerade clothes, etc. Went up to see Mother and called to see Mrs. Clarke. Was on my way to Mrs. Fergusons's to ask them over for tea when met Mrs. Ferguson & Winnie at the Town Hall. Went down town with them and got home at 6 p.m. Charles went to the prayer meeting. January 7. (Wednesday)
Quite mild Snowing but almost rain. Wrote to Nell, Dug, Mrs Luton and Dorothy Luton. Shovelled snow for an hour and a half. After dinner finished the path. Mrs. Ferguson and Winnie came over for tea. Went home about 9 o'clock as Winnie had her trunk to pack to go to the station to-night. She leaves on the early train. Started my short Hand contractions again.

January 8. (Thursday.)

Was typing , taking letters and having dinner until 1.30 p.m. Mrs. McGregor came up to see if all her money were {lost?} (Got the idea from a letter asking her to call at the office to endorse a $6 interest cheque so it could be deposited) and I wrote to Miss McNaughton and Agnes Anderson for her. This being Mother's birthday I went down town, purchased a book for her and went up to see her. Shovelled some snow when I came home. After tea Duncan came up. I wrote to Dorothy and Clare and Duncan took them (the letters) to the post office for me. Charles went to the prayer meeting in the Methodist Church (week of prayer.)
January 9. (Friday)
Wrote some letters for Charles, then took them to the office and got some meat. Did some school work. After dinner went to call on Mrs. Wm. King. Found her sitting up in her room. I was there Mrs Chris King, Mrs. B.D. Halladay, Mrs C. Ankennman and

January 10 (Saturday)
Snowing again and fairly cold. Washed my hair this morning. Did some work for Charles. Wrote to Clare, to Frank, (who is now in Santa Monica, Cal. and I trust it may mean that he will recover his health) and to Aunt Maggie who writes that Dora is ill - nerves - very bad- Which may mean anything. She has been in a couple of nursing homes and a hospital in Toronto in charge of Dr. Gaven but is now in Fenelon in charge of a nurse. Aunt Maggie thinks she is improving. Her husband is, I suppose, still in Cobalt. Tweet is home on furlough but will, I suppose, go back in Spring to China. Alma Halliday is in Guelph Sanatarium and Bert in the Hamilton Sanatarium. Went down

town in afternoon. Came home and after tea mended some of Dorothy's clothes that are to be sent to her.
January 11 Sunday
Went to church and to S.S. Very nice day. Mother was at church and came home with me. Stayed until Sunday School time when she went over to Wm. Halliday's. Storming when we went to church at night. Charlie, Alice, Duncan, Isabel and Mr. & Mrs. Tuer were up after church. I typed a Resolution re Thanksgiving day, for Charles to send to St. Mary's after Sunday School. Collection for Armenian Relief $56.76
January 12 Monday.
Tp Typed School paper for Bud and two recitations for Blanche Gillis. Bud came up and shovelled off the walk to pay for my work. Sent away Armenian cheque. Went down to see Mrs. Clarke but she was asleep. Went to Miss Milne's to see about purple dress. Called to see Mrs. Gun. Then went to Manse to hear rehearsal of Debating points by Miss Pollock and Mr. Millhouse. Did up parcels to send to Dorothy and wrote to her. After tea went to Methodist Church to hear

debate. Resolved that the Pulpit is a greater influence for Good than the Press. Affirmative - Presbyterian- Miss Pollock and Mr. Millhouse Negative - Evangelical:- Mr. Bailey and Miss Dawm. Negative win because they summarized their points and nailed them but affirmative had best points. Judges - Miss Evans, Mr. Davey, Mr. Young - all Methodists but Mr. Young not an impartial Judge. Bound to get back at some Presbyterians. Miss Lochead sang a solo and Mrs. Carder recited. M. Wilkins - chairman. Tremendous storm raging from 5.30 p.m. Got home to find our veranda and steps drifted right up. Charles expects to go to Hanover (Walkerton) on the early train. Mr. Salt of Merchants Bank gone to Quebec Province. Mr. Will Cross appointed manager in his place.
January 13. Tuesday.
Blizzard so bad when we came home that Charles decided not to go to Walkerton until Wednesday. Had a good lot of snow to shovel - Shovelled all the walks and the sidewalk down to the Cement down to King's lot and dug out part of the walk there (mild day) Stormed

very hard in afternoon. Made a box for Armenian tag day for Cavell Girls Club. Ripped Silver trimming off Dorothy's yellow evenong dress to see if it would do for my purple dress. Wrote an address for the Ladies aid who are to present Mrs. Tuer with $100 to-night. Charlie, who is going to Walkerton to-morrow morning, gave me some dictation after tea. Then typed address to Mrs. Tuer and went to Manse to a Meeting of Cavell Girls to get ready for Tag Day on Saturday. About 8.30 14 Members of the Ladies' aid arrived, the Girls' Club went home. The presentation was made and address read and Nrs. Tuer replied in very short speech. Mr. Tuer replied somewhat more lengthily when he came home from Boy's Meeting. Had a regular McGaw Street evening. Came home about 11.30. Snowing hard & snow getting quite deep. Charles in bed. Got to bed at 12.50 p.m. Slept outside.
January 14th. (Wednesday)
Got up at 5.30. Went to attic for Balaclava Cap. Charles went over to

station about ten minutes to seven. train went out about 8 o'clock. I lay down for awhile. Then shovelled walk. It was the worst I have had this winter. Snow was up to edge of bank at one side and at about half way. (deeper than height of snow shovel) Took me a long time. My feet got very cold so came in and shovelled from corner of house to back veranda after dinner. Did some of my typing. Went down to Mrs. Crow's for my 1st Music lesson from her. Then went to a tea up at Charlie's. Alice had invited a great many ladies to meet Mrs. Grant who is visiting her for a short time. Came down with Mrs. Crow and Mrs. Beattie. Mrs. Crow had to go to prayer meeting. Mrs. Beattie and I went down to Stanley's to see Mrs. Stanley and Margaret McLaughlin. Zena and Josie are expected from the West to-morrow or Friday for the Funeral, and Jack the Next day. Then we went to call on Mrs. Bremner and Misses Richards. Came home and typed

six Probates. Just finished before Charles arrived from Walkerton on late train. Cold night.
January 15 (Thursday)
Very cold day. Went down town in the Morning for meat. Then down to Charlie's to see about trimming for dress and to get some facts from Charlie for an address for Mr. W. H. Brown who is to be presented with a gold cane to-night at a banquet in the McDonald House, the occasion being his retirement for a time at least from Municipal life. Went to Leitch's to see about a sheaf of wheat to send down to Stanley's. Came home and wrote the address for Mr. Brown. Then went to the office and did some work. (Miss Pearce went home this morning to her sister's wedding.) Got very cold at night. freshest night yet. Snow is so deep in front of post office that you cannot see across the road. Must be about 7 or 8 feet deep where it is thrown up. Read paper etc., practised for half an hour. Charles at the banquet

Wrote to Clare & Mrs. McDonald. Made a box for Blanche Gillies for Armenian Tag Day. 20° below zero. Slept inside.
January 16. Friday Thursday
Went to office in morning. After dinner made sandwiches (peanut butter and brown bread with walnuts) for the S.S. sleigh ride. Went down to the church. Then Mrs. M.A. Halliday, Mrs. S. Ewart and I went to McNeel's tea (for Mrs. Grant). Went back to church with Mrs. Crow and Mrs. Beattie calling at Crow's on way up. Impromptu programme some of the tiny Children very funny. Marked Mrs. Crow's "Boston Cooking School Cook Book for her. Blanche Gillies and Jessie Leslie called to get box. Had been tagging at the Hockey Match at the rink and had $14.85. Slept inside.
January 17 (Saturday)
Very stormy day. Was at the office all the morning. At noon ripped the collar of Dorothy's evening cloak and hemmed up neck. Took work book to Mrs. Crow and D's Cloak to store to be sent away to be dyed. Went to office where I worked until 6.15. Charles went to the Mr. Stanley's funeral. Josie & Zena both collapsed.

and had to be carried upstairs. When we came home at 6 o'clock (or shortly after) the snow was up over the tops of my boots. Mrs. Halliday telephoned late in the evening that girls had $100 as result of tagging. Slept inside Slept inside.
January 18 (Sunday)
Stormed all night and still storming. They have decided to abandon the snow plough in the sidewalks as one horse cannnot pull it through. Used two teams in the road snow plough. Charles shovelled walk out to road and to back veranda. We went to church which was held in the School room. About 100 there. At half past ten in the morning Saturday's afternoon train reached Chesley. As the Bible classes were called off Charles stayed home from church school and had a needed rest. I went and after I came home spent an hour shovelling out the walks for (the second time it was done to-day.) Charles went to church. I stayed home. 91 in church school. When Charles left for church he said the walk was as bad as ever. Some storm.
1920 January 19. Monday.
Miss Pearce still away so I went to the office in the morning. At noon I practised ½ hour. Went to Miss Milne's to fit my dress and then to the office where I worked until six o'clock. Miss Pearce came home in the afternoon train which got in about 5 p.m. (The late train Saturday night got to Chesley Sunday night at 10 p.m.) After tea I went to Nolan's to tell Mrs. Nolan we would not be able to go to her card party to-morrow night. Charles went up the hill for a walk and Duncan came back with him. I practised an hour. Slept inside.
January 20 Tuesday.
Went to the office this morning and waster a great deal of time (interruptions) before I got my work. After dinner went over to Will Halliday's to invite Mrs Grant & Mrs. Halliday to dinner to-morrow night. Very stormy. Went down town for cream, ham and called and invited Mrs. Crow to dinner. A Mr McKay there who is "a fine singer". When I

Came home. I started my typing. Worked until tea time. Read part of The Globe and then finished my work (21 pages) at 11.30 p.m. Great excitement over the fact that the U.F.O. are trying to buy a building for the purpose of opening a store. Tried to buy the office block. Word arrived to-day that Waller Purdy had died (gas) in Toronto. Slept inside.
January 21 (Wednesday)
Cold bright day - beautiful. practised an hour and tidied up library. Charlie's birthday. Went down town to get Receipt for World's Work for birthday gift. Got it, put it in my pocket. Also got a couple of books and a box of Chocolates for Mrs. Ryan to give Charles. Got home and found I had lost my receipt. Wrote a note. When Charles got it he produced my receipt having found it on the road in front of Mrs. Roger's. Wrote Charlie's little Sketch of the collection of $116 for Armenian Fund by telephone. Took it down to him And took my Music lesson. Mrs. McNeel

Mrs. Crow, Mrs. W. Halliday, Mrs. Grant, Mrs. Stewart and Alice came up for dinner at six o'clock. Everybody seemed to enjoy themselves. W. T. U. have bought Mrs. Lindsay's Block & Ross & Warmington Must move out by 1st of June. Most Selfish, Autocratic Association in the World to-day. It is said the Union is making trouble for Krug's. Want an 8 hour day, a closed shop and $4.50 a day. Very cold night.
January 22 (Thursday)
Bright cold day. Went down to bank with S.S. money and to Miss Milne's to fit my dress. Made up my S.S. Reports - Treasurer and Secretary - took them down to Mr. M.A. Halliday. Called to see Mrs. Clarke but she was too ill to be seen. Is suffering very much from nerves and seems to be growing weaker. Called at the Manse on the way home to get the Session Report from Mr. Tuer. (He is staying in as he has sore arm from Vaccination) Wrote to Dorothy and Clare. Mrs. Tuer brought up the report which was not finished when I was there. Practised half an hour. Room

January 23 (Friday)
Miss Meuser called shortly after 9 o'clock (just before Charles left for the office) and it was about 11 when she left. Discussing a Music Recital. Practised an hour. Then typed the 2nd copy of Senior III paper for Bub. Wrote to Dorothy Nell and Clare Dug. practised anthem half hour. It began to snow about 3 o'clock and I decided not to go out calling as I had intended so I went out and spent an hour shovelling the walk. After tea practised a quarter of an hour (Went over to Black's with some papers for Mr. Black) and a quarter of an hour before tea making 2 times in all to-day. Wrote to Frank and Charles took it with him when he went to the Meeting re: Housing problems. Men came to-day to shovel the snow off the roof, the veranda etc. Great load of snow on everything. Charles had a letter from his sister yesterday saying they had

heard from John who is still a part of the Egyptian Army. He had been sent to Constantinople on a Medical Mission and had been given a week's leave to see the sights and had had an audience with the sultan. Slept inside
January 24th. (Saturday)
Read all morning while I watched for the Milkman. Keith brought up the Meat. Practised over two hours altogether. Coldest day this winter I think. Went to call at Stanley's. Heard that Harry McDonald has at last communicated with Jack. He is in the States somewhere and is doing well. Said to be the best Directory man in North America. Too cold for Charles to go out for his exercises. Called in afternoon to enquire for Mrs. Clarke. She could not be seen and Mrs. Leitch was having a sleep. Slept inside.
January 25 (Sunday) Very cold day. Went to Church in the Morning & evening and to S.S. Charles did not go to church at night. Mr. Tuer's Vaccination was very sore so he did not go to S.S. & Charles took his class. Only Alice and

January 26 (Monday)
Practised an hour in the Morning and half an hour in the afternoon. Did some short-hand. Went up to see Mother. Mrs. Grant & Mrs. Ferguson were there. Called in to see Mrs. McGregor, who sprained her ankle at Mrs. Sanderson's last week. Mrs. Hugh Warmington was there. The ankle is not very bad. Mrs. McGregor had her chickens under the table, a cat under the stove and the most untidy room imaginable. Can't imagine how she lives in it. Duncan came up after tea to see "Life". Looked over the Old Classical Manuscripts. I Read "The Clash." Much Milder to-day but windy so slept inside again to-night.
January 27. (Tuesday)
Nice Mild Morning. Pracised an hour and a half altogether. Read part of "The Clash" went down town to fit my dress. Shovelled the walk when I came home. Did some French. Called at the Manse to enquire how Mr. Tuer's vaccination was getting along. Pretty sore arm Then went up to see

Jean Bell. She had been out for a drive with Florence Leslie and so was rather tired. She tried sitting up in a chair for awhile but seemed to be very weary so she lay down on the couch. I am afraid she will have to spend the rest of her time in bed or on the couch. Life promised to be short and weary for her. Mrs. Bell and Mrs. Grant came in before I left. Much colder by night Charles did not do Sentry go for very long. Slept inside.
January 28. (Wednesday)
Cold day. Read "The Clash", practised an hour and a half. Went down town with S.S. collection. Charles came home at noon stating that he wanted some sandwiches for the train on his way to London. Went down for ham, lemons etc. Wrote a couple of letters (typed) for Charles. He almost missed his train. I went to Mrs. Crow's for my lesson so was not here when he left. After I came home I went down town again to get The Enterprise. Wrote to Dorothy after tea and Mrs. Ryan posted it for me. Mrs. Clarke (Mrs. Leitch's )Mother) is sinking rapidly. Slept inside.
1920 January 29. (Thursday)
Was lazy this Morning as Charles away & did not get up until 8.30. Spent an hour or so mending my corsets and putting a new lace in them. Practised an hour & three quarters. Went down for the Mail. Much Milder to-day. Wrote to Mrs. Norman Robertson & Miss Small. Charles got home on late train 1½ hrs. late. Colder again.
January 30 (Friday)
Cold - very cold. Went down town to try on my dress. practised 1 3/4 hours. Read "The Clash". Went to tea at Mrs. Bell's. Quite a large tea. The house is certainly fine & big; especially upstairs. Fine big hall. Florence Leslie and Jean (who seemed much better to-day) served the supper. Came home and Charles and I went down to Leitch's to see Mrs. Leitch. Her Mother died at half past two this Morning. Coldest night yet. Still sleeping inside.
January 31. (Saturday)
Went down to Leitch's this morning as I promised. Mrs. Clarke looked as though peacefully sleeping. I would rather remember her so than as she looked

this summer at the Chautauqua. The first time, I think, when I have felt so. The trains are blocked. The funeral was to go on afternoon train. As the early train did not get down until after 12 they tried to catch it but Mr. Wright was not ready. The Morning train from Toronto just passed through at 1.30. The thermometer registered 20° below zero at 8 o'clock this morning and was still 8° below at 11. Did some darning and put eyelets in the brassiere Eaton's sent with eyelets in one side only. Went over to the station to say good bye to Mrs. Leitch. Afternoon train only 40 Minutes late. Then went down town for a walk. Very cold. Coldest day yet. Read "The Clash" in the evening. Slept inside. So did Charles, the first time this winter.
February 1 Sunday.
Much Milder to-day but cold enough yet. Charles did not go to Church this morning as he had to study his s.s. Lesson. I went good sermon. Went to s.s. Did not stay for annual meeting. Did not go to church at night but Charles went. After
1920 Church Charlie, Alice, Duncan & Isabel came up for awhile. slept inside.
February 2 (Monday)
Beautiful Mild day. Did some work for Charles and typed out points in debate, "Resolved That the Senate Should be Abolished" for Miss Evans who is on the Negative. Read "The Clash." Went up to see Mother and called to see how Mrs. McGregor was. Mother out but saw her go to Mrs. McGregor's so walked down there and walked back with brother as far as Kyle's. Wrote an address for Mr & Mrs Cruickshanks. Went there with McGaw Street Gang. Typed the address and put it together with 13 paper fasteners, (13th anniversary of their wedding last Saturday) took 13 Scotch Mints each wrapped in paper in a box. The box was wrapped in 13 papers. We got them a work basket with 13 articles in it. Met at Nolan's. Charles only stayed an hour as he was going to Walkerton in the morning on the early train. Had a good time. Slept outside again. Thawing in the afternoon. Roads Soft.
February 3. (Tuesday) February
Charles got away on early train which was sharp on time and pulled out before seven o'clock. Fine day but little colder than yesterday. Beautiful Sunshine. Did some shorthand and read some of "The Clash". Practised about an hour. Archie Crow telephoned that his Mother had gone to Toronto and not to go down to-morrow. Went down for the Mail and to Leitch's for The Globe. Went over to the Mill to pay for some flour. Came home and got ready to go to tea at Mrs. Stewart's. Quite a crowd there. Had a good time and left for home at 8.30 (having been asked for tea and to spend the evening) Charles got home on the late train which was not very late and got in about 10 p.m. Slept outside - quite frosty.
February 4 (Wednesday)
Was cold when I went to bed and so did not get warmed up. Consequently did not sleep much. Wakened or rather startled by fire Bell. Hearing from Central it was Ross & Warmington's Gents' Furnishing Store and a bad fire; I got ready & went down so Charles
1920 need not get up. Stayed until about ½ past 6/ Did not like the look of the fire when I left. Did not think it was under control. About 7.10 we noticed (Charles got up at 7) the Smoke was much worse. I went down again and the south wall fell out (part of it). Just after I got down and Bart Wright's store was all gone too. Charles came down at 8. We went on to the office and then came home to breakfast which we finished about 10.30. I went down at 11 to get Meat for dinner & water was still being played in building which is a complete wrecked and sheeted in ice. Mrs. Oliver & Mrs. Wesley Durst called. Wrote to Dorothy and Jean Maxwell. Rhena Campbell was to come in afternoon for Music Examination but decided to write from 7 to 10 so she arrived at 7. She was peeved because she could not write her Exam at home and was not angelic at all. I gave her the drawing room and left her to herself. She had forgotten to bring her

February 5 (Thursday)
Lovely day. Went down for meat in the Morning and called at Leitch's to enquire after Mrs. Leitch who is still away. Got 5 tons of soft coal in to-day. Went over to Mr. Wark's to get him to shovel way in for team - the snow is so deep. Did 8 Copies Letters of administration and 5 Probates for Charles. Mr. Tuer called to bring some literature to Charles for an address he is to give in Walkerton on Monday night. Took my work down to the office and while there got three letters to write. Just finished a few Minutes after 6. Read The Globe and practised 3/4 of an hour. Read "The Clash". Slept out.
February 6 (Friday)
Fine day, almost like Spring. Wrote a letter for Charles to David Savage in Central America reporting fore. (He owns Wright store) Read "The Clash". Mrs. Meuser called and stayed for about an hour. After dinner was overseeing dressing of Bertha Lemke And Margaret

who, with Mrs. Ryan's help were getting Costumes for a carnival in Paisley to-night. Went up to see Mother and read her a letter I got from Frank. Met her on the road going for a walk, went in for awhile and then Mother walked down to the corner and I walked back to the gate with her. Mary Kyle came along and Mother went on home with her and I came home. Walking bad. Met Blanche Gillies and walked over to their house with her. Practised ½ an hour when I got home. Wrote to Clare, Nell, Dorothy and Douglas.
February 7. (Saturday)
Nice mild day. Washed the palm in the morning. It took about 2 hours. Read "The Clash". Went down town in the afternoon and called at the office. When Charles said he wanted to give me some work so did not get away until 6 p.m. Have about 13 pages of shorthand to type on Monday Morning. Some U.F.O. evidently sent word to the Fire Marshal that they suspected the U.F.O. store had been set on fire as the Deputy Fire Marshal was here yesterday

investigating. (Silly things) After tea I went over to Mrs. Beattie's to see Miss Bridgman, the new High School Teacher who is Supplying for her sister until March 1st. Found she was rooming at Mrs. Crow's so Mrs. Beattie and I went down there to see her calling in At the Public Library on the way down. Got our clock back to-night (Charles went down for it) We missed it very much while it was gone.
February 8 (Sunday.)
Fine day - not so cold. Went to Church twice and to S.S. Wrote to Frank. Charles was preparing an address (Forward Movement) for a banquet at Walkerton to-morrow and so did not go to S.S. I typed some quotations for him before I went to S.S. I also had to select the hymn slides as Mr. M.A. is in Toronto. After Church Mr. & Mrs. Tuer Miss {Brownlee?} & Charlie and Alice came up. I made sandwiches before I went to church.
February 9. (Monday)
Slightly colder to-day but very pleasant. Typed the letters I got at the office on Saturday and took them down to the office. After

dinner I wrote two more letters for Charles. Made him some sandwiches to take with him on afternoon train to Walkerton. He expects to want them after the banquet and Mass Meeting are over. Took the letters to the office and then called on Mrs. Leslie, who seems to be much worse and has to be moved around considerably. Alice was calling there at the same time. Also called to say good bye to Mrs. D. G. Scott who leaves on Wednesday for Montreal. Mr. Scott is manager in a Branch of the Merchant Bank near there. She was not in but we met her in the street and said good bye to her. Practised an hour. Counted the words in Dorothy's story "And in Conclusion". Practised a couple of Recitations for the Young People's Meeting. Debate- Resolved that the Senate of Canada should be Abolished. Very good. Negative win. Affirmative. W.P. King & Harry King Negative Mrs. Davey and Miss Evans. I recited "The Mystified Quaker in New York" and "The Faithful Lovers."

Mrs. Tuer and Alice sent me candies. Mrs. Tuer's was a chocolate bun and Alice sent a box of conversational lozenges. Storming quite hard. Started after dinner and when I got home there was a great drift in the path especially at the Foot of the Step. Timmy Ryan was here and he shovelled it out before he went home. Quite mild, however, and I should not wonder if it changes to rain. Read a chapter of "The Clash."
February 10 (Tuesday)
Finished "The Wild Geese" by Stanley J. Weyman. Practised an hour. Went down for the Mail before dinner. Typed some papers for Alice (a contest - things found on a cent) Also typed Dorothy's story "And in Conclusion" to send to Young's Magazine for her. Went down for "The Globe". Telephoned Nell to wish her "Many Happy Returns of the Day." Says the Fen is very bad in winter. Perhaps we may have Dorothy come home. After tea went to a party at Alice's (given for Miss {Brownlee?}) Had a good time. Charles got home from Walkerton

February 11. Wednesday
Went down for Meat. Practised over an hour. Phoned Stewarts to find out how Jim was. Jen said the doctor thought if they could watch his heart he would be alright. She told me that Jean Johnston had just ad a telegram saying that Mrs. Milton Johnston was dead but not giving any particulars. Went to Mrs. Crow's for my Music lesson and from there to the Public Library to help Mrs. Ferguson with the catalogue. Miss Elworthy called with the books and cards and after tea I wrote 204 Library Cards. Duncan was up for awhile. Soft water in bath-room done. No thaw all winter to supply any.
February 12th (Thursday)
Wrote a couple of letters for Charles. Then wrote a playlet "Business is Business" for Miss Meuser's Boys for her Recital. Typed it and took it down to her. Started it about a quarter to 11 and finished it about a quarter to 4. Then

Went down town. Called at the Manse but there was nobody in. Went to Public Library and worked for awhile. Brought books and cards home with me. After tea wrote to Clare and then Charles and I went over to see Ferna who came home last night. She saw Dorothy in Toronto and says she looks well and likes her work
February 13 (Friday)
Wrote cards for the Library - about 200 or more. Heard at noon that Jim Stewart was dead in Waterloo. He had Flu and pnuemonia but had got over that but his heart gave out. His mother went down on Monday. He was ill about two weeks altogether. I went in to see Rena in the afternoon and then went to the Library where I worked until half past six. Practised 3/4 of an hour. Wrote to Dorothy and Wrote an address to be presented to Mr. Heinmiller by the Chosen Friends. Went down to the Manse about a quarter to 9 to read "Business is Business" to Miss Brownlee. Quite Mild. Shampooed my hair in the morning.
1920 February 14 (Saturday)
Getting Colder. Was writing Library Cards most of the Morning. Finished all the cards there were and there are still about 36 Names to write. Finished "The Clash". Duncan came up after dinner and brought me some snaps and a letter from Adelaide to read. Wrote up notes on "The Clash." Went to Public Library and accessioned the rest of the books for Mrs. Ferguson. Went on down town and came home & shovelled off the walk. Snowing quite hard and drifting badly. Ferna came over and spent the evening and we had a nice chat. The train is very late. Had not left Stratford when it should have been in Chesley. Jim Stewart's body is expected on it. Charles tired out so cannot wait up for it. Practised about 20 Minutes only.
February 15 Sunday.
Very stormy. Went to church in the Morning. As there are about 20 cases of Flu in town the Board of health decided to close up Schools, Churches, Library,
Reading Room, Skating Rink, Bijou & Pool Room & allow no social Gatherings. Order to come into effect at 1 o'clock to-day so there will be no Church to-night or S.S. Saw Charlie and family at Church in the Morning. Got very Stormy and quite cold. About 4.20 I went out to shovel out the path and finished it about 5 o'clock. Played the piano for about an hour. Read "The Scarlett Letter." Charles had a fine rest. After tea Mr. Caldwell telephoned to say that Clarice had influenza. Little Emma Wettlaufer very ill with pneumonia. Train did not get in Saturday night until about 3.30 a.m. After Church Charles and Mr. M.A. went down to Stewart's and then over to see Mr. Blair who is quite ill. (heart) found him sitting up. Slept in.
February 16 Monday.
Still storming with the sun shining occasionally amid the storm. Went out and shovelled the walk. Wrote to Miss Ward and Mr. McQueen. Practised three quarters of an hour. Was type writing all afternoon. Charles went to

Jim Stewart's funeral. I went down town about half past five to get some Tomato soup and some Meat. Still storming as hard as ever but frost is gone off the front door. North Windows covered with frost though Charles took a snap of me standing beside the big snow bank at the foot of the steps. It is higher than my head so I hope the picture of it will be a good one. So windy I guess I will sleep inside. Trains Cancelled. Worst storm this winter.
February 17 Tuesday.
Still Storming. Part of the path was drifted up level. Hard work to throw the snow over the bank. Took me about two hours to shovel out the walk. Was so tired I had to lie down for awhile. Typed a couple of probates. Called to see Mrs. Simpson who has been ill and then went to see Mrs. Stewart. Mrs. Jeni Stewart there. She is feeling very badly about Jim's death. One train went up to-day And one went down about 6 o'clock. Mrs. Jim Stewart was going back to

Waterloo on it with her father. Practised for an hour after tea. Florence Leslie and Miss Smart are the latest flu victims. Wrote to Dorothy and Frank. Slept inside.
February 18 Wednesday.
Went down to Bank with S.S. collection and got Meat. Practised an hour and a quarter. When I came home, Charles had neuralgia in his head. Got him some asperin and he lay down and had a sleep. I left him sleeping when I went to Mrs. Crow's for my lesson. Was to go with Miss Bridgman to McDonald house to see about getting Meals there but as school is closed she has decided to go home on the early train in the Morning. Went with her to Cobean's and the Enterprise office. Got the Mail at the Post Office and took it to the office & then came home. Practised 3/4 of an hour in the evening. Very cold night. Slept inside.
February 19 Thursday
Typed the entries of yesterday for Charles. Cleaned and oiled my typewriter. Charles's head feels better this Morning.

practised an hour and a half. Wrote to Clare. After dinner went over to see Ferna who leaves to-morrow morning for Guelph to see Alma and then on to Toronto and Montreal. (She expects to see Dorothy in Toronto). Then went down town - got a box of candy for Charlie's birthday and some tea and soup for Mrs. McGregor. Went up to Mother's where I left the box for Charlie on the supper table. Visited Mother & called to see Mrs. McGregor who is better and says she will be up on Monday. Duncan came up after tea to see "Life." Then Charles, Duncan and I played seven-up. Duncan who was in debt for toothpicks refused to go home until he had gained up and had 7 to the good. 22° below zero at 7.a.m. Slept inside.
February 20 (Friday)
Worked all Morning for Charles. Duncan was up for a little While. Went down town, met Miss Brownlee & Mrs. Tuer and walked around with them to Mrs. Oliver's to get Miss Brownlee's fancy work as she was

leaving on the afternoon train for home (Barrie) Nice day. Then I called to see Mrs. Blair. Mr. Blair very poorly and was right in bed. Had been somewhat better but took bad in the night. (heart) Called to see Jean Bell who seemed to be fairly bright. Then called to see Jean Johnston but found her out and Called in Mrs. (Dr.) Mair who has been ill with quinsy. Walked up with Mrs. Ferguson. She says Miss Murray Contemplates leaving Havergal and going to Nova Scotia to teach with a friend of hers. Wrote to Dorothy after dinner and after tea to Mrs. Leitch (who is in Cleveland having gone over there from Hamilton, where she had gone to attend her mother's funeral, to attend the funeral of her sister-in-law who died suddenly of heart trouble) Nell, Douglas, Mr. Atkinson and Janet Feehan (Atkinson) whose baby boy arrived on Jan. 24th. Quite frosty again to-night so shall sleep inside.
February 21 (Saturday)
Worked for Charles until about 12.30. Practised an hour. Did my darning. Went down to public Library in the afternoon and did some work for Mrs. Ferguson. Then went down town to get some things for Dorothy's box of eats. Wrote a note to Clare re her bank deposits - bonuses etc. Fine day- thawing some places in the sun. Wrote to Miss Small & Irene Frazier.
February 22 (Sunday)
No church or Sunday School. Seemed a very long day. Beautiful sunshiny day with a little feeling of spring in the air. I read "The Last Hope" by H. Seton Merriman. Went out and shovelled snow from outside sidewalk. Was out an hour and a half altogether. Charles had neuralgia in his head again. After 2. p. m. I hope it may soon be better. Charlie and Alice were up in the evening. They had walked around a five mile block in the Afternoon, (had the 6 children with them) Charlie is going to Toronto in the morning. Wrote to John Hewitt and his Mother.

February 23 (Monday)
Mild day but snowing hard. Just after I started to shovel out the sidewalk. Must have snowed an inch to-day. (More than that) Mrs. McGregor came to wash 1st time she has been out washing since she hurt her ankle. Instead of arriving about a quarter past ten or later she astonished us by appearing about ten minutes past nine. Did some work for Charles in the Morning. Went down town and got some card and paper to do up Dorothy's boxes of 'eats'. Got 2 boxes ready. Walked down with Charles to carry one to Post Office while he carried the other. Wrote Dorothy a letter. Went on down to the office to get Mail. Came home and shovelled the walk. Practised for an hour. Read The Globe. Played for Charles an hour in the evening. Slept outside.
February 24th (Tuesday)
Worked for Charles all morning. Practised two hours altogether. Did some Short-hand & some French. Went out in the afternoon. Somewhat

colder. Called at Blair's to enquire how Mr. Blair was- somewhat better. Mr. Tuer was there at the same time. Called at Johnston's but Jean out again. Then went down to Stanley's. Mrs. Stanley pretty well but not able to go out yet. They had a fine picture of Stanley and had had a letter from Delphine saying she weighed 117 lbs when she was married and now weights 178 lbs. Was visiting Janet (Feenist){Feehan?} Atkinson and says the baby is a very fine baby. After tea I read to Charles as he was afraid it might make his head pain again. Has not bothered him scarcely at all to-day. About 10 p.m. Duncan called on his way to the late train to meet his father. Got quite frosty at night so slept inside.
February 25th (Wednesday)
Beautiful sunshiny day but not thawing. Trees were covered with hoar frost and when the wind blows it looks just as though we were having a number of snow flurries. Worked all morning for Charles. No soft water in

the bathroom tank so for about a week we were carrying water up from the cistern. Now it appears the cistern is about dry, for the water is very muddy, so we are melting snow. Wish there would soon be a rain to fill the tank. Are afraid to run the hard water in because of the tank for radiators and the water first being connected with bath room tank and hard water would fill them up. Went down to Mrs. Crow's for my lesson. Mrs. Beattie & Miss Florence Kirchener to see me about looking over Miss Kirchener's paper for Horticultural Society. After tea Duncan came up and we played seven-up until Duncan went to meet the late train at 10.30. Charlie did not get home last night. Went to Frank. Very frosty. Below zero so slept inside.
February 26th. (Thursday)
Did some work for Charles. Went down town for meat and called at Miss Milne's with my purple dress to have it fitted properly. Finished "The Haunted Book Store." {Christopher Morley} Went down to fit my kimina (kimono}. New Spring goods just arrived so stayed

February 27 (Friday)
Was kept busy with office work until 2 o'clock. Charles was not feeling very well (stomach out) so he did not go to the office in the afternoon. Had another letter to write for him. Got him hot water bottle etc. and about five o'clock he began to feel better, I spent an hour shovelling the walk and side walk. Cold day. Went down to the office with letters I had written & got the Globe and the Mail from the office. Practised an hour in the evening. Wrote to Dorothy. Duncan came up about 8 o'clock & read The Literary Digest. Slept inside.
1920. February 28 Saturday.
Did Some work for Charles. Mr. Bell called and began discussing Forward Movement and it was 11 o'clock before Charles got away to the office. It is now 3.30 p.m. and he has not yet got home to dinner. Still cold and snowing steadily. Drifting some Noon train got in about 2 o'clock. Took Charles down a Thermos bottle of bovril and some soda biscuits. office still full of people. Went up to see Mother. came home, shovelled the walk and took some papers over for Mr. Black. It was after seven when Charles got home for his tea. Tried to get started on a paper of Miss Florence Kirchener's but found it hard work. Practised an hour. Quite frosty so slept inside.
February 29th Sunday.
Still no church. Walked up the hill with Charles in the morning. Fine day but still enough frost to make the snow crack. Wrote the paper on "What a Horticultural Society could do for a Small Town. Then we over to Mrs. Beattie's to read it to her. She approved. Charles went to Biehn to see Fred W.

Adolph who arrived on Saturday night with his father's body. We were to go to the Manse but Manse all dark when I came past so came on home. Charles telephoned from the Manse later. Rink was going to open last night in spite of notice from Board of Health but thought better of it when they were served with a notice. Dr. Main, Medical Health officer had told Mr. Lustig he could open and he would not say anything. Dr. Main says he is going to resign to-morrow because the Council will not raise his salary. Poor kind of a town Official. Played the piano for an hour & a half. Will sleep in yet again to-night. Cut out some material for a picture letter I want to write to Blanche Gillies. Charlie and Alice came up for awhile.
March 1st. Monday.
Cold and stormy. Had some office work to do and had to go down in the morning to fit my kimina {kinomo}. Typed out the paper on "What a Horticultural
Society could do for a Small Town. Cut out a lot more material for my picture letter. Had to go down in afternoon to fit my kimina {kimono} and called at McDonald House & gave Miss Kirchener her paper for Guelph Meeting on Friday. Accumulated still some more material for Blanche's letter.
March 2nd. Tuesday.
Had to do some work for Charles and typed "an apology" to send to Dorothy re not thanking us for box, not writing, not dating her letters, etc. Took the work down to the office and got myself a new pair of {foot?} holes. came home and had lunch and Charles & I caught the train for O. Sound {Owen Sound}. Going to hear Ex-President Taft lecture. Mr. & Mrs. Bell and Jean went along & Messrs. Conrad & Christian King were there Also Jean, Mrs. Bell and I went to McKay's in a taxi. Later Mr. Bell and Mr. Mickle arrived at the house where Jean was to stay & rest until we went home. Mr. Bell and I went down town, called on Davena Ritchie. Went to Scarrow's and looked at shoes
for Jean but found she would have to fit them herself. Visited the two book stores and bought a book for Alice for a birthday present (birthday to-day) and Mrs. Bell bought a picture book for Donald McKay - the little sick & helpless son of the house. Met Mr. Bell & Mr. Mickle at the Seldon house where we had tea. Then walked up to McKay's with Jean's bag and went on to the West End Methodist Church to the lecture. Saw Dr. Middlebro, Mr. Dyer, Jack Telford, Mr. Black, Davena & Matie Ritchie & Miss Kate Bell in the audience. Mr. Kilbourne Acted as chairman & gave a good address. Mr. Taft gave a most excellent address on "The League of Nations." He is not nearly so stout as he appears in his pictures. He has a splendid smile & a most entrancing little chuckle. He speaks very quietly but convincingly and has a great fund of humor. His Jokes are preceded by the little chuckle. Had a few minutes chat with Miss Kate
Bell When leaving the church. Returned to hotel where we had a chat in the sitting room with Miss Doyle, the proprietoress. Got to bed about 12. p.m.
March 3rd. Wednesday
Had breakast with the Bells at hotel. We all called on Davena & Matie Ritchie. Charles went to attend to some business. Mrs. Bell and I went to the drug store for some tooth-paste and then visited Miss Bell's School. We went to the Kindergarten and saw the children play. Then visited the Manual Training Room & the Domestic Science room Where a sewing class was in session. Then visited Miss Bell's room where she had the children read for us. She must be some teacher for they read splendidly (2nd Bk "The Cricket and the ant.") We visited Jessie McTavish's room where the kiddies sang for us. Then we visited the Art Teacher's room and saw some very good work done by pupils from 2nd Bk up to Entrance Class. Also called at Mr. Shaw's (Principal) room.
The Bells and the Mickles went to McKay's for dinner. Jean had spent the time resting but had a young man visitor in the evening. Drove to station in taxi. Train not in but only had to wait about 15 minutes. Taft came down on train, only one coach on. Mr. M.A. H. got in at Tara & told us Taft was to address the Chesley School children from the car. Quite a crowd at the station (Will Lamont is Brakeman on the train) Mr. Taft spoke very nicely & crowd gave him a cheer when he started & when he finished. Mr. McDonald introduced him & Dr. Biehn was on platform as representative of School Board. Went down to office to see if there was a letter from Dorothy - got one. Then went over to see Mrs. Leitch who got home on Monday night from Cleveland where she went from Hamilton (her brother's funeral) to her sister-in-law's funeral in Cleveland. Our train almost ran over a man just before we reached Chesley station. A Jew got on the track & did
not hear the train. The cow catcher threw him over a couple of times and he rolled down of the snow bank to within a few inches of the wheels of the train. Had his cap torn to bits and his head cut but will be alright it seems. Cut out some more material for my picture letter.
March 4th. Thursday.
Did some work for Charles in the morning but cut some material for picture letter. (at same time cleaning out the shelf below library couch.) Mr. Caldwell is sick so I spent the office afternoon at the office. First thaw since before Christmas and it was raining when I came home at 6 o'clock. Charles went out with the shovel to dig out the sewer trap and I shovelled out quite a length of sidewalk. Slept outside. Wrote to Clare.
March 5th. Friday
Wind changed in the night. Windows covered with frost again and quite a fall of snow. Did some work for Charles. Then cut out pictures, at the same time clearing out shelf under couch.
Went down town in the afternoon and shovelled the walk when I came home. (was at it half an hour) After reading "The Globe" and "The Enterprise continued 'cut out' work. It got quite stormy. Mr. Schmidt said it was the stormiest day this winter out in the country but I fancy he has forgotten some of the storms. Bad day, however. Wrote to Dorothy, Carnival to-night, fixed Bert Lemke's head dress. Slept outside.
March 6th (Saturday)
Worked all morning for Charles. Mr. Caldwell still confined to the house. Continued 'cut-out' work. Fine, bright day but still very frostly. Went down town in the afternoon. After tea Dr. Biehn came up to see Charles, re Hul McGuire V. Halladay. Continued cut out work. Cold so slept inside. Have a bad cold.
March 7th. (Sunday)
Still cold but bright. Church again to-day. Went to church and to S.S. Did not go to church at night as I had neuralgia in my head. Quite stormy
when we came home from School. Meeting after S.S. to discuss "Graded {helps?}. not considered very feasible. Misses Ella McLean, Irene Halliday, C. Pollock, Mr. Tuer and myself are to meet at our house to-morrow night and try and re-arrange classes upstairs. Went to Coles re box for Dorothy's birthday. Played the piano for an hour. Charlie and Alice came up after church. Very windy so shall sleep inside.
March 8th. (Monday)
Charles left for Walkerton on the early train. Blocked and did not leave until about 8.20. Mrs. Ryan made a mistake and called him at 5.15 a.m. He had mixed up his watch in setting it, too, and came in at 1.15 to know the time so altogether he had a disturbed night. Did some work that Charles left for me. Wrote to Miss Mcnaughton for Mrs. McGregor. Then went down with my work. Very Stormy. Had a letter from Frank asking for information in regard to relatives in
Victoria & Vancouver. Went into the office and answered it at once as Frank wanted the letter before he leave California (about 15th) came home & Shovelled out the walk. Had a S.S. meeting to change classes re: Irene Halliday, Ella McLean, Cassie Pollock, Mr. & Mrs. Tuer here. Had sandwiches & coffee for them. Duncan was here for an hour before they came looking at "Life." Trains cancelled. Had telephone message from Hanover where the men, Charles, Dr. Biehn & B.S. Halladay (His case in the West) have to stay all night. Very Stormy day. Slept inside.
March 9th. Tuesday. Monday
Much Milder to-day. Charles drove up from Hanover and got here a few minutes before 11. Came home to dinner but had to hurry back to Division Court as train got in about one o'clock instead of at 4.30 as reported at Hanover would be the case. Yesterday Morning's train
is reported off the track up north. Eva McDonald, ready to go to Toronto, and Ida Halladay, going to Acton to visit Ethelyn, both are stranded here until there is a train. Did some Shorthand, some French & some Memory work. Practised two hours altogether. Went up to see Mother. Mild but storming when I came home. Judge Greig came up for tea dn while he was here I did part of an initial on my dresser cover. Slept outside.
March 10th. Wednesday
Did some work for Charlie. Went down to Mrs. Crow's for my music lesson. Came home and shovelled snow for an hour. Eva Mar. McDonald and Pearl Buckley called. Pearl was returning a book she borrowed. Practised for an hour altogether & did some short-hand & French. Have Moved outside to sleep. Wrote to Dug
March 11th. Thursday.
Did some work for Charles. Got my S.S. orders ready and went down to the bank with them. Mr. Tuer came
up at 11 a.m. and we arranged to start a New Cradle Roll. Went out and shovelled snow for an hour. Wrote to Dorothy and Clare. Practised 3/4 of an hour. Duncan came up in the evening and we played Seven-up. Was 11 p.m when he went home. He owed me 30 Sticks of timber. Charles was reduced to 5 and I, having 78, had increased by capital more than threefold. Rained in night. 1st rain since November.
March 12th. Friday.
Rather a Jubiliation in the bathroom this morning as it rained in night and tank half full. Had a real bath and a shampoo. Was busy until 1 o'clock with office work. Wrote to Nell and a birthday letter to Dorothy who will be 21 years old on Sunday. I sent her $10 and her dad sent her $15. Rainy at least showery day. Roads are impassable. At Mr. Peter Kincaid's funeral, which is to-day. The Sleigh
(hearse could not get out) is to be drawn by men. Shovelled snow for an hour. Had to write a note for Free Press for Charles & type it after tea. Freezing at night.
March 13th. Saturday
Very cold to-day. Did the entries then, as Mr. Caldwell is away (to Hamilton to visit a friend & have his eyes tested) Charles telephoned me and I went to the office & got some work and came home to do it on my own typewriter. Did my darning and mending (at noon & after tea). Went to the office in the afternoon but did not get a chance to get much work as there were so many people in. Very cold to-night. Started to arrange picture letter for Blanche Gillies.
March 14th. Sunday.
Went to church twice & to S.S. Did some work on my picture letter. Nice day but cool. Only Charlie, Margaret & Alice Jean at church so they did not come up. Dorothy's birthday. 21 to-day so we rang her up. Nice to hear
her sweet voice. She says she is going to do all kinds of things now she is 21.
March 18 Monday
Mr. Caldwell still away. Did the entries in the morning and continued my picture letter. Then Charles phoned for me to come down and do some affidavits. When I came home I proceeded with picture letter. Wrote a note to Clare at the office. After dinner shovelled for awhile. Snow was pretty icy so found a little was enough. If Charles wants me he is to telephone for me. Went down town about 5 o'clock. Duncan came up after tea to see "Life." His dad is making an Irish window display. Went to attic & got old harp for Duncan.
March 16th. Tuesday
Worked for Charles. Then did my picture letter. Shovelled the rest of the side walk up to McCannell's. Mrs. M.A. Halliday called. Finished my letter. Mr. & Mrs. Tuer came up about a quarter to ten for a little while. Fine Spring day. Thawing. Freezing & Snowing at night.
March 17th. Wednesday
Did some office work. Cleaned up Dorothy's closet. When Charles came home for dinner he had some work he wanted finished for afternoon train. Did it. Went to Mrs. Crow's for lesson. Called at office, M.A.'s office & let them see my letter. Then called to see Mrs. Leitch. Mrs. Ferguson brought me address for me to type. Mr. Caldwell came up and we had a game of seven-up. Cold to-day. Snowing quite a show for awhile.
March 18th. Thursday.
Did some work for Charles. Cleaned up my closet. Typed some riddles for Blanche and some poems (?) for Ferna which I promised to send her. Charles Went up to Mother's to see her after tea went to church to social evening held for saying farewell to The Wm. Halliday family and the Gillies Family. Programme - Hymns, Scripture Lesson, Duet Mrs. Crow & Mr. Workman (violin & piano) Speeches, Charlie, M.A.,Charles & piano solo Miss Elworthy. Vocal Duet. Mrs.
Tuer & Ruby Milne, solo Miss Smellie, Violin Solo - Sammy Steinberg. Eats. Had a nice social time & got home about 11 o'clock. Wrote to Clare.
March 19th. Friday.
Did some work for Charles. He went to Tara on noon train returning on afternoon train. Got to be quite blizzardly. Great fall of snow and all the sidewalk has to be shovelled again. Wrote an address (Titles of songs) for Blanche & Wilda Gillies who are to be presented with oynx {onyx} rings at a girls party to-night. Went to Dr. Biehn's at 3 p. m. Called at Mrs. Leitch's Mrs. Crow's and Tuer's. Wrote to Dorothy. Had a letter from her to-day saying she had just got her hand out of splints a few days ago. Tore the ligaments but did not say how.
March 20th (Saturday)
Did some work for Charles. Shovelled the walk inside the garden, then , when I had typed my letters, went out and shovelled the sidewalk outside. Beautiful
day but still cold wind. Went down to the office after dinner to bring up a jar of cream which Will Peterson brought in for us and which Charles forgot to bring up at noon. Then went down again to get some material for cushion tops and arranged and cut them. Practised an hour. Alice and Margaret came up with some carrots and got a parcel to take back with them. They stayed for quite a little chat.
March 21st. Sunday.
Went to church twice & to S.S. Beautiful day. Charles was feeling very tired so did not go to church at night. S.S. Teachers' Meeting after s.s. which did not get out until half past four. Mr. M.A. Halliday gave in his resignation as superintendent not accepted but is to "be let out on bail" until September. As we are short about 4 teachers now it seems hard to see where the workers are to come from. Charlie and Alice came up after church. They had walked out to {Lowe's?} Mrs. Lowe is dead. to be buried Monday.
March 22, (Monday)
Took 25 pages of shorthand. Went down town for meat. Called Mrs. M.A. Halliday on the way home. She fell last week and sprained her shoulder. Said it felt somewhat better but she still has it in a sling. Typed my letters - got through about 2 o'clock - (had dinner of course) called on Mrs. Holford who is ill and also went to see Mr. & Mrs. Blair who have both been ill. Mr. Blair still in bed and Mrs. Blair went for a short walk, where sidewalk was cleared. Went down to Charlie's store and then came home and took Mrs. Ryan's watch down to Cobean's and got a new strap for it. Put covers on 3 cushions after tea and practised an hour during the day. Wonderful display of Northern lights & Mr. McDonald telephoned after 10 p.m. to get quotation from "Edinburgh After Flodden" Some time hunting it up but got it. Springlike day. Wore my spring coat for the 1st time since I put on my fur one.
March 23rd Tuesday
Did some work for Charles. Went down to get some meat. With crow bar Charles and I finished taking snow off in front of King's lot. Practised about half an hour. Mr. Caldwell and I went down at 4 o'clock and bought a cut glass fern bowl to presented to the Moores (Rev. & Mrs. Moore of Baptist Church) who are leaving for Georgetown. The McGaw Street Gang met here and then went to Biehn's where the Moores and Caldwells had been invited for the evening. I wrote an address and typed it for the occasion. The arrival of the gang was a great surprise to the Moores. Had a good time. Duncan was up in the evening for awhile. Covered 2 cushions. Fine spring day.
March 24th Wednesday.
Did the entries and a couple of probates for Charles. Mrs. Holford was to leave on the noon train for Owen Sound to go into hospital. Likely to have an operation. I called to see if I could assist her but she did
not need any help. Covered 2 cushions. Went to Mrs. Crow's for my lesson. Miss Kirchner and Mrs. Beattie called and Miss Kirchner brought me some most delicious maple cream for writing Horticulture paper for her. Practised about an hour altogether. Dr. Biehn has been appointed by Educational Board of Windsor to do School work so they will be leaving town. Sorry to see them go. Wrote to Alma at Guelph. Mr & Mr. Tuer came up after Prayer Meeting. Gave me some new ideas about the worth of our walnut furniture. Warm to-day but cooler at night. Prepared story for Pearl Buckley's composition (first outline)
March 25th Thursday.
Did Some work for Charles. Went down town for meat. Beautiful warm day. The sidewalks are all cleared but the streets and crossings are very dirty. Went out after dinner to go up to Mother's but met Mrs. Ferguson who told me she was in the Store so I had a chat with her there. Then went
to the Public Library and helped Mrs Ferguson sort cards for over an hour. Pearl Buckley called there (had been up to the house) so I came up with her and gave her the notes. Wrote to Clare, Dorothy and Nell.
March 26th. Friday.
Warm day but got windy and much cooler. Rained during the night and there was one little shower during the day. Mrs. Ryan went off on the early train. I got up at 6. a. m. and, after seeing her started, stayed up. Did some work for Charles, did the work. Then went down to the McDonald House for dinner. Mr. & Mrs. M.A. Halliday there also. When I came home I did some more work for Charles. Then went down to Charlie's store and called on Mrs. {Cleve's?} who just came back from Toronto last night. Her sister died while she was down there. Got tea ready and washed the dishes. Mr. Moss was to come to cover the Library couch to-night but did not show up. I hope he comes along to-morrow as I would like it done before Dot comes home.
March 27th (Saturday.)
Did some work for Charles. Did the work at the house. Went down to McDonald House for dinner and dined with Hallidays again. Went down town in the afternoon and then went over to Mr. H Moss's to see if he was coming to put cover on couch. He was not in, and, although I left word, he has not shown up. Got tea and washed the dishes. Duncan came up for awhile. Then Mrs. Beattie, Mrs. Davey and Miss Kirchner came in to talk over Horticultural Society with Charles. Took their notes for them.
March 28th. Sunday.
Did not go to church in the morning as it was 10 o'clock before we started breakfast and I had the dishes to do. Went to S.S. Blanche was away to Hanover so I had all the work to-day. Being Review Sunday Mr. Tuer gave an address on "The Forward Movement." Had a hint of my old pain so did not go to church but took measures to try and get rid of it. Charles, being very tired did not go either. Alice sr. and Margaret went to the Baptist
church to hear Mrs. Moore Sing and arrived at the house before Charles did, who came along later from the Presbyterian church. Thunder storm with quite bright lightning and a great deal of wind.
March 29th. Monday
Very windy and quite cool. Did the entries and the house work. Went to dinner at the McDonald House and dined with Halliday's again. Practised an hour. Wrote to Ferna. Mr Furney called to see about a band concert. Kept me late getting tea, After tea Mr. Moss came over to re-cover the library couch. Cleared up the rest of the papers that were under it. Mrs. Ryan got home on the late train. Very cold & windy. Snowed at 6 o'clock and throughout evening.
March 30th. Tuesday.
Went down for meat. Got a table cloth ready to hem. Wrote to Miss Small. Just after dinner fire bell rang and King's Whistle blew furiously. Very windy & cold. It looked very serious for awhile but am glad to see they got
it out. Did Some work for Charles. Covered two cushions. Wrote two addresses for Blanche & Wilda Gillies - typed them and went down town and got ribbon for them etc.
March 31st Wedenesday
Did some work for Charles. hemmed one end of my table cloth. Went to Mrs. Crow's for my lesson. Went to a tea at Mrs. Beattie's about 30 there. Helped Mrs. Biehn, Mrs. Beattie and Miss Kirchner serve the tea. Great spread. When I got home Charles and I went over to Mr. M.A.'s to say good bye to Mr. & Mrs. Will Halliday who leave to-morrow for Toronto. Mr. W. Halliday came home with a gold-headed cane presented to him by the Agricultural Society. Raining in afternoon & evening.
April 1st. Thursday.
Did Some work for Charles in the Morning and went down town before dinner for some probate forms. Did some more typing after dinner.
stopped to go to the station to say good-bye to Laura Halliday. came back with Miss Leslie and Mrs. Tuer who came in for awhile, then finished up my typing and took the work to the office and did some shopping. Left my picture letter at Mrs. Biehn's - came home, having forgotten to call for it so went back down. Got supper ready for Dorothy and Mr. Douglas Nickle who are to arrive on the late train. Wrote 14 post cards (absurd views labelled "in, near, vicinity of Chesley etc." to be sent to Clare - one each mail till all gone. Duncan was up for a couple of hours. Went to train to meet Dorothy - left the house when it was 50 minutes late. Walked up and down the platform with Charles 3/4 of an hour before the train arrived. Had some time finding Dorothy and Dug in the crowd. They had supper. Doug and Charles went to bed. Helped Dorothy (who has her broken hand in splints) to take a bath and we got to bed about half past one. Quite windy and cool.
April 2nd (Friday)
Good Friday. Raining hard in the Morning. Hemmed the other end of the table cloth. Prepared grapefruit for breakfast for Dorothy and Doug who got up about 10.30. Helped Dorothy throw out and burn some of her old letters. Hearing that Mrs. Holford's body had arrived went over to her house to see if I could do anything to help. Mrs. Lawrence (Mamie's cousin) was there. Then went down to the Manse and Biehns to tell Mrs. Biehn Mrs. Holford was dead (died after an operation for gall stones. Performed by Dr. Middlebro at O. Sound) Walked up and down the walk for an hour with Charles. Air fresh and energising. Cleared up cool. Practised ½ an hour. Dorothy and Doug went down to McDonald's and Borothy went to a tea at Lynda Simpson's. After tea Edna, Mar. Jack and Wat came up and the Young folks played bridge until 10 o'clock when they went to a dance in Biehn's Hall. Blizzard at the time.
April 2 3rd Saturday
Did the entries for Charles. Helped Dorothy make her sandwiches for a tea dance. Went down town for meat. Went to the Public Library in the afternoon to help Miss Elworthy as Mrs. Ferguson is away to Toronto for Easter holidays. Dorothy had Eva, Mar., Edna, Isa, Pearl, Roy, Douglas, Harry, Wat, Wilfred Davison for a tea dance. Went back to Library after tea. Busy. Charles called and we went down to Leitch's and got flowers to send to Mrs. Holford funeral, came home and after the young folks eft, Doug and 2 put rugs down and things away. Cold. wore my fur coat.
April 4th. Sunday
Went to church twice and to Sunday School. Cold. Wore my fur coat. Dorothy and Doug only went in the morning. Blanche Gillies' last Sunday. Mr. Halliday presented her with a "Book of Praise". Dorothy and Doug went over to Wellington King's after church for awhile. Charlie and Alice were up after church. Had skating in Paisley rink on Saturday night.
April 5th (Monday)
Did the entries for Charles. Went down town for meat. Lots of snow. Had to shovel it as the broom was not heavy enough. Fixed up my parcel for Blanche Gillies. Dorothy and Douglas went down town for a few minutes. Ida Halladay and Ethel Read are to come up to play Bridge. Regular snow storm this afternoon getting colder at night. Got tea waggon ready for Dorothy.
April 6th. Tuesday
Tank was empty in the bath-room. Charles turned on the hard water and then could not turn it off. Went over to McCannel's house to get Mr. McCannel but found he had gone to the store. Got him by phone and he came up and discovered that Charles had just been turning the tap the wrong way. The large tank was not empty but something had gone wrong with the ball. Mr. McCannel fixed it and I had several trips to the attic to see that valve worked properly when the tank was full. (Before all this) I got up
at {5?}.20 and went over to see the Gillies family off to B.C. Cold wore my fur coat. Went down town for meat and to get a letter. As Charles was busy came home with the meat and then went back. Still busy so came on home. In the afternoon played treble Solitaire with Dorothy and Douglas Nickle. Went down town before tea. Dorothy and Doug went to play Bridge at McDonald's. After tea Went to the Public Library to help Miss Elworthy - no fire at all. Dorothy and Doug went to a dance in Hanover.
April 7th. Wednesday
Had a whole Morning's work this morning for Charles. Went down town in the afternoon for some corn, lettuce, etc. Practised an hour after tea. Dorothy and Doug have gone down to the McDonald's. Regular blizzard from about 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Quite a lot of snow has fallen.
April 8th. Thursday
Did the entries. Went down town for meat. Wrote to Clare, Nell and Frank. Dorothy
very fine address. He came back from China with Tweet Dickson and thought very highly of her. At the close of the banquet Mr. Jno. Oswald and Mr. J.C. Milne announced their intention of giving $500 each. Called into Tuers on the way home to deliver part of their goods we carried up.
May 11th Tuesday.
Went down town for meat and to get my Oxford stretched. Went up to School room with Charles to take down flags and then to office for parcels. Wrote an article on the banquet and one on Miss Meuser's Recital for the Enterprise and took them down and went on down for my oxford. Typed 12 copies of Dorothy's poem "The Day sleeps and awakens." Mr. Tuer came up for a little while with a list for Forward Movement returns Which are now $6500. Wrote to Dorothy and to Mother. Practised for about half an hour. Fine day but wind still cool.
May 12th Wednesday
Did the entries and a couple of letters. Typed 28 copies of Forward Movement lists - 2 pages each single space) for Charles. M. Tuer called after dinner just as I was going to Mrs. Crow's for my lesson. Went down for my lesson. Wrote another letter for Charles after tea.
May 13th. Thursday
Went down town for meat. Called at Mrs. Green's to pay her for housecleaning and at Mrs. Beattie's. both out. Typed 25 Forward Movement letters for Charles who went out to Peter McTavish's with Mr. Halliday to canvas for Forward Movement. Wrote to Clarre and Frank. Practised ½ an hour. Very cool at night. Had to wear Dorothy's fur when I went down at 9 p.m. to post my letters and could feel the cold through my coat. Got telephone message from Rockwood that Ms. Joliffe is dead. Charles went to Preparatory Service.
May 14th Friday
Did a second copy of lists for Forward Movement canvassers. Went to office to
get them posted. Delivered M.A. Halliday's W. T. Ross', Charlie's, M. Ewarts's, Mr. Dolphin's, Mr. Milne's and then went around to Cobean's house with his. Practised an hour. Went down town in the afternoon. Called to see Mrs. Caldwell who goes to Walkerton Hospital on Monday for an operation. (Is going over Sunday Morning.) After tea had to write a couple of letters for Charles. Mr. Fiddis called to leave his Forward Movement cards.
May 15th. Saturday
Charles went to Rockwood on the early train to Mrs. Joliffe's funeral. Did my Mending. Went down town in the Afternoon and knit a few rows on Aldyth Harper's sweater while I was in the Store. Duncan came up after tea and Charles got home on the late train. Nice day. Charles met a lot of old family friends in Rockwood. Heard that his grandfather and grandmother were present at the organization of the London Missionary Society. The pipes at the factory burst with the frost last night.

May 17th Monday.
Mrs. McGregor ill so she did not come after saying she would be here which made Mrs. Ryan late with the washing. Went down town for meat in the morning. Clarice, Victor and Douglas Caldwell were here for dinner as their father over in Walkerton for Mrs. Caldwell's operation. Real spring day but looks like rain. Mr. McConnel came up this morning and put the new tank in the attic. Hunted up some clothes for Mr. Moss. Went down town in the afternoon. After tea Mr. Robt. Oswald and Mr. Wm. English called for Forward Movement cards. Went to Young People's Meeting to see the Mission Band's little play.
May 18th. Tuesday.
Charles and Mr. Andrew Young went off at 9 a.m. to canvass their district. I went down town with my s.s. collection in the morning and took my hat to Miss {Tom's?}. Charles had dinner at Mr. John Oswald's and phoned for me to get Mr. W. T. Ross' cards and those of Mr. S. M. Ewart. Went down for them in the afternoon for them.
Typed the W.M.S. address to Mrs. Irvine and took it over to Mrs. Ferguson after taking it to the office to be bound. Totalled up the Subscriptions after Charles got home. Mr. Tuer and Mr. Wm. English came up to see list. Total to-night - $10,659.17. Nice day. Raining during night. Threatening all day but no rain. Wrote to Agnes Anderson for Mrs. McGregor who started out to come to our place this morning but was ill and only got as far as Leitch's.

Went to church and to Sunday School but did not go to church at night as a representative of Sailors' Mission took the service. Beautiful day. Walked up and down outside for some time after church in the Morning. Communion Sunday. Charlie, Alice and Duncan were up after Church at night.
May 19th. Wednesday.
Typed a letter for Charles. Wrote to Dorothy. Mr. J.A. Patterson - K.C., (to report progress in Forward Movement), Mr.
Follis, Alma Halliday, Mrs. Wm. King, (still in hospital at Kitchener) and to Miss Small. Went to Mrs. Crow's for my lesson. As it was raining when I was through she lent me an umbrella. Took it back to her before tea. Rained quite hard. Got our veranda chairs out to-day. The air was beautifully fresh and I sat on veranda to read the Globe. (in the rain) Kind of rain one likes to be out in.
May 20th. Thursday.
Very hot. Wrote a long letter for Charles in the Morning and took it down to him as it had to go on the noon train. Mrs. Ryan forgot her oven and burnt te pudding so I went down town for an ice cream brick. Wrote to Clare and Sophia Albright (for Clare to see if she would go to camp) Charles went out with Mr. M.A. H. to canvass on the Kirkwood line. Wrote another letter for Charles after dinner. He was collecting limbs cut off apple tree by prunner. Went to post letters at Post Office. Then called to see Miss
Annie Milne Who appears to be very ill. Also called to see Mrs. Douglas, who has been ill, but found her and Myrtle housecleaning. Charles had tea out at Allan Kirkwood's. Not very well pleased with the result of their canvass. Practised an hour.
May 21st. Friday.
Wrote a letter for Charles. Went down for meat. Wrote to Frank. Ripped my autocracy gown and my red dress. Went over to Miss Milne's with the New York Times. Went down town. In the evening Mr. Caldwell came up for some seeds. Then Mr. Kellerman came over as he and Charles are the Committee for floats for the 3rd of June. Charlie, Alice, Duncan and Bill came up to see the new tent and army cots which arrived to-day for camp. It was after 11 when Mr. Kellerman left.
May 22nd Saturday
Went down town to see about getting my suit fixed properly. Then went to see Mrs. Beattie about float for Horticultural Society. She gave me a daisy root which
I planted. Wrote a letter to High School Inspector with list of applicants for Principal for Charles. Called at Miss Milne's with some flowers for Miss Annie Milne who is very poorly, Planted some flower seeds. Went down town in the afternoon. Called at the office and took a long letter for Charles which I typed. Charles and I went down town in the evening to get the {War?} History from the office. Called in Charlie's store.
May 23rd Sunday
Fine day in the morning. Went to church twice and to S.S. Rained in the afternoon. Mr. & Mrs. Tuer came up after S.S. to see the tulips. After church at night Mrs. Beattie and I went for a walk. Then she came in and I divided up my seeds with her. Charles, Duncan, Margaret and Alice went to Olphant this morning for the 24th. Duncan & Charlie to paint the cottage, Alice & Margaret to clean it.
May 24th. Monday.
Got up at 5.30 a.m. Left at 7 for Brussels Party, Mr. W.T. Ross Charles Myself and
Mr. Beattie driving. When we got to Walkerton went to the green House and ordered geraniums, salvia etc. and got some roses for Mrs. Caldwell. Then went up to the hospital to see Mrs. Caldwell. Took her the roses and a book. Found her quite bright and cheerful. Passed through Formosa, Bellmore, Jamestown and About a half a mile from Wroxeter. When we got to Brussels Mr. Ross insisted that we go to his father's. Miss Anna Ross very ill. Mrs. Smith (sister) in charge of home. Her husband died in the Spring and her nephew since then. Mr. Ross & Miss Ross of Kincardine there also. He went to see the Chicken farm and saw the chickens hatching in the incubator and a little girl packing day old chicks in pasteboard boxes for shipment all over the country. 25 in a box and she just put them in like eggs. Went for a drive around town in the afternoon with Dr. Geo. Ross (dentist) from Wingham. Started home about 7.30. Got here at 10.30. Mr. Beattie went to Mitchell races so we had
to wait for him. Charles was busy investigating the John Kyle charges. Found nothing in them. Fine day.
Tuesday May 25th.
Fine day. Worked in the garden all morning. Made 3 flower beds at the back and put in my seeds. Wrote to Dorothy and to Mrs. Smith, Brussels, and to Clare. Went over to Mrs. Beattie's to help her parcel up and send out Horticultural shipment. Went down to school to get Miss Pollock to get boys to deliver parcels. Called at Tuer's. After tea called on Miss Annie Milne and took her over a book. Mrs. Beattie and I tramped around until 10 o'clock to see Who would decorate cars for the Procession on June 3rd. Charles at session meeting.
Wednesday May 26th.
My knee was slightly sore last night but when I was down town this morning it got much sorer and I called & Dr. Rannie bandaged it for me but it got worse on the way home. However I went down town in the afternoon. Charlie, Duncan & Alice came up in the
evening and the new tent was put up to see how it looked. A few holes & several patches discovered. Mrs. Beattie came over with some seeds and the Horticultural float was discussed. Mrs. Crow in Toronto so no lesson.
May 27th. Thursday.
Knee quite sore. Mr. Tuer came up to see the tent and I went around the garden with him to get artichokes sorrel & cress. Went to bank with S. S. collection and Mr. Ryan's and Tommy's deposits. Helped Charles take the tent down. Wrote to Clare. Just heard from Aunt Maggie that Dora committed suicide {Dorothea Mary “Dora” Dickson Hand Fenelon Falls, daughter of Margaret Halliday Dickson see page 9} & Charlie phoned that Mr. Engel died this morning at 5 o'clock, at 6:30 p.m. Charlie and Alice came along in the car and we left for Hanover. Called first at Engel's. Saw Jack, Mrs. Dowkes, Dr. Engel, Mrs. Engel, Duncan and Mrs. Ball. Mrs. Engel seemed quite dazed. Mr. Engel had been ill for 9 weeks with rheumatism. Then had pleursy and finally the fluid on the lungs filled the heart. Dorothy got home on
Tuesday from Detroit but did not see her father as they were afraid of the excitement for him if even knowing she was in Hanover. Went to the Recital in the Misses Hahn's study. (Charlie and Alice had received tickets from Miss Hahn and wanted us to go to the Recital with them. So, upon hearing of Mr. Engel's death, we left a half an hour earlier to allow time to call on them.) Prof. Viggo Rihl was the pianist and he was wonderful. Saw Mrs. Miller and the Hahns and found Mr. Workeman there. He came home with us in the car. They served sandwiches and coffee at the close of the programme and we got home about 11 p.m. Quite cool coming home.
May 28th. Friday.
cool this morning. Knee somewhat better. Went down for meat in the morning and to Miss Milne's to take my suit blouse in to be fixed as sleeves do not fit. put in some flower seeds in the afternoon. Went down town to give Charlie birthday present for Alice whose birthday is tomorrow. Charlie not there so gave it to Alice who promised not to open it until tomorrow. Wrote to Dorothy, Doug Nickle, Frank and
Aunt Maggie. So cool we required a fire in the grate to-night. Wrote 3 letters for Charles. Mother came home from Toronto late train.
Saturday Thursday May 29th.
Went down town in the morning for meat. Wrote a letter (long one) for Charles. After dinner went to Hanover (Party: Charles, Charlie, Alice sn., Duncan Bill and myself) to Mr. Engel's funeral. We sat in the car while the two Charlies attended the services on the lawn. Then as there was still a Masonic Service to come, we left and came home. Went to Miss Milne's to fit my suit blouse. Washed my hair after tea.
Sunday May 30th.
Went to church twice & to S.S. Tyed a list of names for Honour Roll to be put up in vestibule of church and also three notices for church. Mother came up after church. While we were at S.S. she went to see Miss Annie Milne & Charlie called for her after S.S. After church at night Charlie, Alice (sn) and Margaret came up for awhile.
Monday May 31st.
Worked in the garden until 12 a.m. (Put out 13 phlox, 13 petunias, 13 stocks and filled a bed with seeds. Did a probate for Charles. Got Dorothy's panama hat from attic, went down street, got a box at the store and mailed it to her. Went for a walk. Intended to call on Mrs. Wm. King, who returned from Waterloo Hospital on Friday night, but did not want to pass the bull dog. Watered plants after tea and went down to Church to discuss float "Canada Helps Armenia" with Cavell girls. Mr. Tuer called in the Morning for list for Honour Roll. Some names added. Mrs. Oliver called in the evening, also some of the Cavell girls. Hot & dry.
Tuesday June 1st.
Did some typewriting for Charles. Worked in the garden all Morning. Went down town in the afternoon and called to see Mrs. Wm. King. found her fairly well but of course not very strong. After tea went over to Mrs. Beattie's to help her make cedar wreaths for side of float. Margaret,
Alice; Margaret & Alice Stevens came up to see about dresses for the float and I found them here when I got home. Hot & dry.
Wednesday June 2nd.
Went down town for meat. Geraniums and Salvia came. Helped Mr. Clifton a little with them. Wrote to Clare. Went down to Mrs. Crow's for my lesson. Found Mr. Tuer and girls waiting for orders re float when I got home. After tea Mr. & Mrs. Tuer Charlie, Duncan, Margaret, Alice, Margaret Fry, Frances, Isabel, Margaret & Mary Steven and Annie Sloan were all here and we were all busy working at the 2 floats which were in the back yard "Armenia aids Canada" and the Horticultural Float. Hot - rained about 10 drops or so in the evening. Much cooler after tea.
Thursday June 3rd.
Got up at 5.30 a.m. Mr. Tuer came along about 6 a.m. Put up flags on pole, horse & pony house. Helped on floats and got them started off.
(In Angus McDonald's truck for "Armenia Helps Canada" and Mr. Porters' dray for Horticultural Float). Mrs. Beattie, Mrs. Tuer and I went down to school grounds to see floats assembled there. Mrs. Beattie and I came up here While Mrs. Tuer dropped off at the Manse. Mrs. Beattie and I walked down to see the Roller rink. Just had rough floor partly on. Community dancing to-night. Took stuff off floats & put it away. Called at Biehn's in afternoon to wait for Beatties. Went to grounds in their car. (Party - Beatties, Misses Nell & Bell Elliot and myself) at 1.30 and got home at 6.15. Met Father Cadot, Mrs. McKay & Mrs. Middlebro of Owen Sound. After tea went down town to get facts for London Free Press. Took down account and typed it for telegram. Duncan came up. (Keith here to climb tree in the Morning & put up big flag & stayed for breakfast) Wrote to Dorothy. Played seven-up with Duncan until 11 o'clock. Fire in grate. Very cool all afternoon.
Friday June 4
still quite cool out- getting warmer outside - fire in fireplace - none too hot. Practised about ½ hour in the Morning. Duncan came up to take the flag down and shot five blackbirds and hit two others. Mr. Caldwell went to Walkerton in the afternoon to see Mrs. Caldwell so had to go down to help Charles at the office. Put away flags. After tea I went over to call on Mrs. Annie Milne. She was sitting up in a chair but looked pretty sick. She had been downstairs for the 3rd of June and got quite tired out.
Saturday June 5th
Did some letters etc. for Charles. Went down town (got orders ready) to Banks with S.S. Money and ordered supplies for next 3 months. Wrote account of June 3rd Parade for Enterprise (Both Mr. McDonald and Mr. Nolan away on Press Excursion) and took it down. After dinner went down for some ham to make lunch for Charles who goes to
Hamilton on the afternoon train. Went over to see take a book and some lilacs over to Miss Anne Milne. Warmer to-day but can still stand fire in the grate. Went to Father Cadot and sent him Dorothy's poem "The Day sleeps & awakens". Helped get lunch made up for Charles. Then he came home and announced that he had been knocked down and run over by an auto. (Mr. Patchell from the country who was following close behind a truck and who did not tout his horn) His ankle was very badly swollen where the wheel went over it. I bandaged it up and painted his thumb with iodine, where it was bruised. He decided to go on to Hamilton so I helped him pack and went to the station with him. I expect he will very stiff & sore to-morrow and will likely notice the shock more then. Mr. Caldwell came up for a book. Duncan came up and spent the evening. Charles telephoned about 10 o'clock that he was feeling somewhat better. Watered the flower beds at 6 p.m.
Sunday June 6th.
Much warmer to-day. Went to church in the morning and to S.S. Mother came up after church and stayed until after S.S. As Charlie broke the back axle of his car yesterday he could not come for her so I walked up to the Baptist Church with her. Getting very warm. Mrs. Ryan went to Paisley in car (Barnes Bowie, Ruby Robinson & Tom) so had to get my own tea. Wrote to Charles to send Dorothy's poems and to Mrs. Caldwell, Walkerton Hospital. Went down to post office with them. Watered the lawn which was very brown and did not go to church. Charlie, Alice sr. and Duncan were up after church and Mr. Caldwell came up to get a book. Charles telephoned from Hamilton that his foot was worse than he expected and he could not get around and so would be home to-morrow night.
Monday June 7th.
Went down at 7 o'clock and turned on the spray. Went down town for meat.
Mended Charles' trousers where they were torn when he was hurt. Helped Duncan Measure off tennis court. Mrs. Beattie and Mrs. Biehn called to ask me to write an address for Mr. & Mrs. C. Smellie's 15th anniversary of their wedding Day, and a surprise party going out there. (I could not go as Charles coming home.) Went down town for the Mail. Played several games of tennis with Duncan. Wrote the address. Typed it after tea. Mrs. Beattie called for it. Began to rain about a quarter to 7. Rained heavily till about 10. Went to the station to meet Charles. Mr. Beattie came in from Smellie's to take him from the station and we came home in the car. Had to help Charles to bed. Sorry I could not go to Smellie's. Jen King invited me to go to Walkerton in the afternoon but had to stay home and write the address.
Tuesday June 8th.
Phone rang at 7 a.m. Dr. Rannie asking Charles to go out to make Mr. Fiddis' will. Got ready (helped him)
and was away about 8 o'clock. arrived about 5 minutes too late. Went down town for meat and some Messages. Wrote to Margaret Howitt, Clare and Dorothy. Fine day. Went down after dinner for the Mail and to Miss Milne's to see about getting a dress made. Forgot to take some money down so went back with it. Meeting of Soldiers' Memorial Committee here in the evening - M.A. Halliday, Mr. Bell & Charlie. Decided to have a canvass of the town. Wrote 3 letters for Charles.
Wednesday June 9th.
Helped Charles with Forward Movement report. Directed Mr. Clifton and helped him put in the foliage plants. Went down town for the Mail and some messages. Played tennis with Duncan. Went to Mrs. Beattie's and Mrs. Ferguson's, Smellies'. Mrs. Elliot's Biehns' and Leitch's to invite them for to-morrow night - having Mr. Jas. Smellie here. Had ice cream.
at Christie's. Mr. Leitch's treat. Went over to see Miss Annie Milne - found her poorly - called in to see Mrs. M.A. as she was sitting on the verandah. Meeting of High School Board here to select Principal (as Charles cannot walk very well) Miss Meuser called in the afternoon to see about Theory Exams. I called at Mrs. Crow's to tell her why I did not come for my lesson. Alice Jean brought up the butter.
Thursday June 10th.
Was busy hunting up ideas for entertaining. Went down town after dinner to get some things for to-night. played tennis with Duncan in the Morning - 2 sets - 4-2. 4-3. 1st set for me. 2nd for Duncan. Arranged slips for guests - one to sing - to play- to recite, to find a partner and chose a stunt. Also an aeroplane trip - stop at Adirondacks to hunt. (pig in register) Sir Jas. Smellie found it after long hunt. Next stop Mackinack to fish. (typed slips with conundrums.
answers fish. Answers were pinned up around the room. Those who brought correct answers got sugar sticks. Next stop Klondike where they dug for gold nuggets (chocolates wrapped in gold paper by Duncan and Myself) in a box of sawdust with a wooden shovel. Miss Smellie & Mrs. Bell sang. Mr. M.A. H. played the piano. Mr. Chas. Smellie recited "Tam-o-Shanter", Mr. Leitch sang, Mr. Bell & Mrs. Jas. Smellie made speeches. Thunder storm which delayed the ice cream so was quite a wait between courses. Everybody seemed to have a good time. Charles feeling very tired. Duncan helped serve. Mrs. Green helped Mrs. Ryan. Party - Mr. & Mrs. M.A., Mr. & Mrs. Bell, Mr. & Mrs. Leitch, Mr. & Mrs. Beattie, Mr. & Mrs. Chas. Smellie, Misses Smellie, Mrs. Ferguson, Miss Elworthy, Mrs. Biehn, Mrs. Elliot, Mother, Mrs. Maxwell, Mrs. Crow. Charlie and Alice, Mr. James Smellie. Broke up about 11.30 p.m.
June 11th. Friday
Tired and lazy to-day. Did a letter for Charles. Duncan was up. Went down town in the afternoon and called to see Mrs. McGregor and then went on to call on Mother. Mr. Copeland (the prospective Principal for High School who came up to look over the ground before accepting the position) called at the house in the evening. Went over to Black's to return some books. Miss Blue called to enquire how Charles' foot was, Ruby Robinson to see Mrs. Ryan. Mr. Caldwell to see Charles, Miss Helen Smellie to get her glasses. Charles feeling more rested to-day. (Mr. Beattie still driving him up and down) Wrote to Miss McEachran. Practised about an hour.
June 12th. Saturday
Awake a good part of last night with sore throat. {lungs?} to-day. Mended my Corsets. Went down town for meat. After dinner returned some books to Library. (Before dinner typed an account for Charles) and went down to Dr. Rannie's. Felt wretched. Had temperature & good
doses of {lungs?}. Got some medicine. Lay around in the evening but helped Charles as usual. Mr. Gordon Lindsay came off the late train to see Charles so it was late when he went to bed. About 11.30 Mr. Davey left Mr. Buckley's crutches on the verandah for Charles as the ones he ordered by telephone in the Morning for him had not turned up. Hot.
June 13th. Sunday
Felt wretched so lay on sofa. Got up about 10 a.m. Did not go to Church. Mother arrived after Associate Communion Service. Library Clock stopped. Main Spring im My Watch broken. Mrs. Ryan lent me hers but I set it an hour so was getting ready at 2 o'clock as I supposed to go to S.S. when Miss McMillan arrived asking for East & West. Found it was 3 o'clock. Went down to S.S. Found Duncan & Marshall Steven busy at my work. Well mixed up but got it finished & report ready. Did not go out at night. Charlie, Alice, Isabel, Mr. & Mrs. Tuer
came up after church. Hot.
June 14th. Monday
As Mrs. Pearce is away on her holidays I had to go to the office. Drove down and up with Charles in Mr. Beattie's car. After tea went down to Mrs. McDonald to get some vines planted then called to see Mrs. Caldwell, who got home from the Hospital yesterday, for a few minutes. Went to see Mary Milne who is sick. Also to take some papers to Annie Milne. Attended to changing spray etc. between times. Very hot.
June 15 Tuesday
Did an agreement at home and then went to the office for the day. After Before tea went in to see Mrs. Caldwell. After tea did some watering and went down to fix Mrs. Caldwell up with a new binder. Raining hard in the evening. Went over to late train but, as I expected, Dorothy did not come. Pouring rain.
June 16 Wednesday
At office all day. In evening planted some seeds. Went to Mrs. Caldwell's
and then went to McDonald's to see Eva's clothes and presents. House very nicely decorated with peonies etc. Eva's clothes also very pretty. Typed part of "Six cups of chocolate" for Blanche Gillies. Went to train to meet Dorothy and as usual it was midnight when we got to bed.
June 17th. Thursday
Cleaned Dorothy's pink linen dress as well as I could for her to wear to Eva McDonald's wedding. Her trunk not here yet. Went to Cobean's and bought a butter dish for a wedding present. Worled at office until Noon - half holiday. Dorothy went to wedding to help wait or serve. Tied up vines and did some other work in the garden. Mrs. McDonald borrowed my sherbet glasses. Called at Miss Milne's. Miss Annie Milne's and at Mrs. Caldwell's to fix her up. Then dropped into Tuer's to enquire how Mrs. Rae was. Very poorly but Dr. Middlebro did not operate.
June 18th. Friday.
Rained considerably in the night. Cold and raining until noon. Went to the office. Called at Lustig to pay for meat and Christie's to pay for bread. Went back early at noon to do some of Mr. Caldwell's work. Mother came up in the evening with some ceneilat {celandine?} poppies. Then Duncan arrived. I planted the poppies and walked up to the gate with Mother then called at Caldwell's and bathed Mrs. C's back and fixed her up. Still cool but somewhat warmer.
June 19th. Saturday.
{Music?} exam (Theory) at the Manse to-day. Got tables ready and papers out etc. Then left Dorothy to preside and went to the office. Did a great deal of work - no idle moment. Bought a dress for Isabel's birthday which was yesterday. Dorothy went to the show with Mar. McDonald. Went down to Mrs. Caldwell's and called at Tuer's to enquire for Mrs. Rae. Miss Annie Milne very poorly. Washed vest. Did some shopping for Dorothy. Mr McNaughton and Mr. Black called in evening. Nice day. Not too Hot. Finished typing play for Blanche G.
June 20th Sunday.
Dorothy and I went to church in the Manse. Charles had his chair down on the lawn. Mother came up after church. I went to S.S. As it looked like rain, Mother walked home so I walked up with her. Went to church at night. Masonic brethren there (about 60) Went to Mrs. Caldwell's after church. Margaret, Frances, Alice & Isabel sat in one seat but went home after church. Charlie, Alice & Duncan came up after church.
June 21st Monday.
Was at the office all day. Mrs. Beattie and Mrs. Bell called in the evening to see Charles about Soldiers' Memorial Canvass. Dorothy had Ida H , Jen King and Mar. McDonald up in the afternoon to play Bridge. Rained all day and quite cool. Fire in the fireplacce & also in the range. Went to fit my dress. Dorothy at dance in Hall.
June 22nd Tuesday.
Was at the office all day. Very cool and raining in the morning. Cleared up in the afternoon and was warmer at night. After tea rolled the tennis
lawn and helped Dorothy mark part of it. She was in too big a hurry and so got it crooked. Went to enquire for Miss Annie Milne who was very ill to-day. Then went to Mrs. Caldwell's. Fire in fireplace - also in range.
June 23rd Wednesday.
At office all day - very busy. At noon wrote an address for Irene Halliday from her S.S. class who are presenting her with a Bible before she goes to Toronto. On the way back to the office after dinner went round to Leslie to see if Florence would play tennis with Dorothy. Went in to see Mrs. Leslie. Dorothy and Florence played four sets - tennis over at the Park. Went to Miss Milne's at 5 o'clock to fit my dress so did not get all my letters done - had to type the dress address after 6 o'clock. Sewed up band of Dorothy's skirt. Waited for Charles to get his call through to London Free Press about U. F. O. picnic. Dorothy down at Mar. McDonald's. At 10 o'clock went down to Mrs. Caldwell's and then went
up to Charlie's to the S.S. party. Helped Alice serve the supper. Charlie took the girls all home at once in the Ford (13 of them) and then took the 7 grown-ups all at once. Florence Leslie, Jen McLean, Ella McLean, Mrs. Tuer, Cassie Pollock, Irene Halliday and Myself. Fine day - cool at night.
June 24th. Thursday.
At the office and busy all morning. Half holiday. Had to go down to fit my dress. Wrote to Frank, Clare, Doug. Mickle and Doug Lilhio. Called to see how Miss Annie Milne was. Played seven-up with {plus's?} and Dorothy. At 10 p.m. went to Mrs. Caldwell's.
June 25th. Friday.
Fine day - cool at night. Went to office all day. Went down 3 times in the afternoon to fit my dress. Got Meat in the Morning and brought it home. Did a little weeding after tea and tied up vines in the morning. Called in evening to see how Miss Mary Milne was -- did not go in, then went to enquire
for Miss Annie Milne and down to Caldwell's. Wrote to Alma. Charlie, Alice, Mother and the baby went to Oliphant, via Southampton, yesterday afternoon. Mother was to stay in Southampton all night and they were all to get home to-night bringing Duncan with them. He went up with a couple of boys on Monday - the other two were to get back yesterday.
June 26th. Saturday
Worked hard at the office all day. Came back home in the morning with some Paris Green for Mr. Clifton. After tea went back to the office to finish St. Clair Park account. Florence Leslie, Mary Wallace & Dorothy played tennis. Change a book at the Library. Went to see how Miss Milne was, found she had had a fairly good night and also a good day. Went to Caldwell's. Fine day.
June 27th. Sunday.
Tiny shower in the afternoon, otherwise warm day. Dorothy and I went to church in the Morning. I went to S.S. Mother was up from Church until after
S.S. Mrs. Ryan went to Southampton, starting about 9 a.m. She, Mr. & Mrs. Green went in Mr. Beattie's car, (arranged by Charles) and Tim and Lillie Jacklin went in M. Burnett's car. Dorothy and I did the work. Charlie and Alice came around after tea and Charles and I went to Peabody Church with them. It was a fine night for a drive and we enjoyed it greatly. Regular little country church - small organ - coal oil lamp Chandeliers and long lengths of stove pipes. Minister was fairly good. Choir of 9 and an organizst- about 100 people there. Went down to Caldwell's after I got home.
June 28th. Monday.
Was at the office all day. Did not feel very well as had old pain in my side. Took some aspirin at noon. Duncan here for tea and he and Dorothy played tennis after tea. Watched them awhile, did some watering, went over to enquire for Miss Milne. Had good day. Then played Seven-Up with Duncan
and Dorothy Charles. When I went to Mrs. Caldwell's Dorothy took my place & when I returned Charles went to bed and I took his place. Duncan went home about 11 p.m. Miss Pearce came back yesterday but took the day at home to fix up her things. Her typewriter is back & Mr. Caldwell tried to fool me with it and make me think it was mine.
June 29th. Tuesday
Thunder storm in the night. Wet day. Stayed at home. Knit on Dorothy's Scarf for her white sweater. Charlie, Duncan & Keith up to get the Cots & mattresses etc. ready to go to camp. Went to the office in the afternoon and got some work. Typed at home until 6 o'clock. Mr. Mineel took Charles for a ride. They went to Paisley and had 2 sundaes apiece. (Mr. McNaughton along) Knit pink scarf for Dorothy's sweater. Irene Halliday called to say good-bye before leaving for Toronto to-morrow. Went to Mrs. Caldwell's.
Wednesday June 30th.
Shampooed my hair. practised 3/4 of an hour. Finished Dorothy's pink sash. Went to Mrs. Crow's for my lesson. Mr. Tuer & Miss Leslie playing tennis with Dorothy. Went down to Mrs. Caldwell's but Mr. Caldwell was sitting on verandah so will go down after tea to look at wound. Dr. Glover's cancer serum is making a great stir all over the world. Mr. J.C. Milne is making arrangements to send Miss Annie Milne down to be treated. Next over to enquire for Miss Annie Milne. Then went to Fry's to see about getting car but they were all out. Went to Mrs. Caldwell's but she had company. Helped Dorothy make sandwiches and prepare a lunch for Doug Nickle who is to come on the late train. Went to the station to meet Doug.
Thursday July 1st.
Mr. McNeel asked us all to go to Southampton. Went down to the office to get some money for Charles. Charles went over to see Miss Annie Milne before she
left for Toronto. I went down to Mrs. Caldwell's. Started for Southampton about a quarter to 11. Went to Patk Hotel first Where found Nell and Doug and Clare. All had dinner there (Nell, Doug, Clare, Charles, Dorothy, Doug Nickle and Myself.) Tom Neelands out fishing and they dined up town. Went to see Leitch's in their cottage, then down to Sandend cottage Where the Neelands and Clare are located. Spent the afternoon lying on the Sand. Margaret Neelands, Dorothy and Doug Lillico went in for a swim. Went back to Hotel for tea. Dorothy & Doug Nickle going with the Neelands. Started home with Mr. McNeel at 9 p.m. Dorothy & Doug Nickle stayed for the dance and came home with Wat King, Mar. McDonald, Roy Reid and Pearl Buckley. Thunder storm in the night. Nell and Doug gave us all the fish they had caught and we weighed them when we got home - 4 lbs & 13½ ozs. altogether.
Friday July 2nd.
Had to type interview with Miss Pollock
about the fuss at Speedwell Hospital for London Free Press. (Nurses refused to go into Kitchener). Took it over to Mr. Farney's, then called to enquire how Miss Annie Milne got away. Found her leg had been broken just by nurse turning her in bed but she got away alright in her private car. Went to Mrs. Caldwell's. Wrote to Doug, Dick, Miss Small and Blanche Gillies, Made lemonade for Dorothy and Doug Nickle who were playing tennis and went down town for films and an ice cream brick. Miss Pollock and Mr. Farney came over in the evening to finish up the interview business.
Saturday July 3rd.
Typed the interview over again with corrections. Also did 2 probates. Dorothy and Douglas took Charlie's car over to Southampton to bring him and Duncan home. Bud went along. Hard work getting them started. Took the probates to the office. Mr. Jolliffe had dinner over from Paisley- came up to the house
for an hour and I made him a cup of tea. Went down town afterwards. Went to Mrs Caldwell's twice to-day. Quite cool in the evening. Mother & Duncan up in the evening. Dorothy & Doug not coming home till Sunday night.
Sunday July 4th.
Went to church twice & to S.S. Charles went to church in the morning. Communion Sunday. Walked down. Went to Mrs. Caldwell's before church in the Morning and after church at night. Dorothy & Doug got home about 9 o'clock. Charlie, Alice and Duncan came up after church at night. Had a fire in the fire place after tea, very cool.
Monday July 5th.
Went down for meat & just got home when I had to go to the dressmakers. Took a bath in the afternoon (usually take it at night) as there was a fire in the kitchen & plenty of hot water. Went down town. Dorothy & Douglas playing tennis. After tea Mr. Caldwell, Miss Leslie, Doug and Dorothy played good tennis. Duncan was here and Jean
Bell and Marion Leslie came along to look in. Charles went out to Misses Anderson with Mr. Bell - Miss Catherine died yesterday. Went to the train to greet Jack Steven (and his wife) He is just returning from overseas. Played treble solitaire with Dorothy and Doug.
Tuesday July 6th.
Went down for meat and to take s.s. collection down. Raining a little. Called at Mrs. Caldwell's but found her up and Dr. Mair arrived while I was there so did not stay. Went to Miss Milne's to fit my dress. Douglas Nickle went away on the afternoon train. Raining. Dorothy went over with him and I went to meet her with an umbrella. Wrote to Sophia Albright, Aunt Amaisi, Dick and Annie Burbank (Atkinson). Charles, Dorothy and I played Seven-up.
Wednesday July 7th.
Went to Mrs. Caldwell's and then went around to enquire about Miss Annie Milne. Dr. Glover decided not to give her
any serum treatments and she is to be brought home to-night. Called at Mrs. Tuer's to tell Mr. Tuer. Typed the Forward Movement Committee Report (some job) and "The King's High Way for Irene Halliday. Went down town with Dorothy in the afternoon. Fire in grate in evening. Raining in the evening. Wrote to Mr. Atkinson and Irene Halliday. Cold drizzle.
Thursday July 8th.
Beautiful day. Charles told me in the Morning that he had got quite a jolt in a letter he received from Dr. McLaughlin of Hamilton who said that the X ray plate of his ankle showed signs of hardening of the arteries. Of course one hopes he will prove to be wrong. I have had it following me as a shadow all day. Dr. Rannie is away this week for a holiday. Went down for meat. Came home, then went to Mrs. Caldwell's and went to enquire how Miss Annie Milne got home. She had a good night. Called at the Manse to give Mr. Tuer the Forward Movement report. Did some weeding in the seed beds.
sprinkled a little. Went down to the post office with Dorothy after dinner and to Jackson's (Photographer) to get her B.A. degree framed. Her Westbourne Certificate & Doug N's photo and also Dean Cappin's. Half holiday so Charles spent the afternoon outside and about 5 o'clock he went to see Mr. Cassels, who is ill, and I went to take Forward's Movement Report to Miss Annie Milne, who was greatly interested in it, and they asked me in to see her. She was quite bright. Duncan came up in the evening and Dorothy spent the evening looking over and reading her old letters.
Friday July 9th.
Fine day. Cloudy in the Morning - a few drops of rain - then warm. Went to Mrs. Caldwell's in the morning, Did some weeding. Knit a great many rows on Dorothy's orange sweater. She and Duncan played tennis. Went down town and called to enquire for Miss Milne. Played 2 sets of tennis with Duncan. After tea
Dorothy and Florence Leslie played tennis. I weeded awhile and then decided to go to Mother's but my foot was sore & when I met Mrs. M.A. & I got her to come back with me. Sat on verandah, ate lollipops & talked. Dorothy, Florence, Charkes, Mrs. M.A. & I . Then I went over with Mrs. M.A. to shiw M.A. list of pupils in Mrs. Ferguson's class which I had spent most of the morning preparing.
Saturday July 10th.
Hot day. Went down for meat. Came home and went down to Caldwell's. Found Mrs. Caldwell out. Did a great bunch of mending and knit a sleeve for Dorothy's orange sweater. Typed 5 copies of a Probate for Charles. Took it down town. Charlie had seen Dr. Rannie and he thinks Dr. McLaughlin is wrong and that there is no hardening of the arteries. Felt much happier and somewhat relieved of the shadow. Dorothy had Ethel Reid, Mar. McDonald & Viola Mair here playing tennis. Jack, Wat & Stan turned up
also. I brought home ice cream bricks for them. After tea knit the other sleeve for D's sweater while Misses Tuer & Caldwell & Miss Leslie and Dorothy played tennis. Dorothy & Mr. Caldwell were beaten. Stan called for Dorothy to go to the Bijou. Wrote to Miss McEachan. Duncan was up in the evening.
Sunday July 11th.
Did a notice for church. Charles, Dorothy and I went to church in the Morning. Sermon about Christ's own sayings about his death & life. Mrs. Ferguson, Mr. Leslie, Mr. M.A. and others rather disturbed thinking Mr. Tuer was rejecting the doctrine of the atonement. Union Service - Evangelical & Presbyterian both morning & evening in our church. Mr. Kellerman away & other Church painted. Went to S.S. Mother came up after church & stayed until after I went to church at night. Charles & I went to church at night. Frank Adolph called in the afternoon. They have a large lumber business at Baynes Lake and he does a good deal
of travelling for the Mills. After church Charlie, Alice, Mr. D. Steven and Jack Steven and his English wife were up. They leave (Jack & his wife) for Regina Tuesday Morning. After they left I walked over to the station with Dorothy to post a couple of letters. Raining in night.
Monday July 12th.
Raining in Morning then very hot. Orange celebration in Owen Sound so very quiet here. Wrote a letter for Charles. Wrote to Miss McNaughton and Mr. Atkinson for Mrs. McGregor. Also to Clare, Frank and Aunt Annie. Went to enquire for Miss Milne. Did some weeding when I came back. Knit the sash for Dorothy's orange sweater - do some more weeding after tea and did some {sentry?} {go.?} Charles at Red Cross meeting until after 10.
Tuesday July 13th.
Knocked a lot of potato bugs off the potatoes. Went down town to get some ice cream for dinner as it was Court day and Turkey case on and
Charles wanted dinner at 12 o'clock. Wrote to Len Carter, Mr. Phillips and Irene Frazier. Went down to get some ham for tea as Judge Greig and Mr. Start coming for dinner. After dinner, about 8 o'clock, went down to Public Library with Dorothy to get a book for her to read. Judge Greig & Mr. Start left shortly after 8 as going on late train. Telegram arrived saying Jack Reid was coming on the late train so Charles and I went over to meet him. He stayed with us as Charlie and family away to the Lake.
Wednesday July 14th.
Went down about 8.20 a.m. for bacon and milk for breakfast, (as cream sour.) After breakfast went up to Mother's with Jack. Charles and I went over to the station with Jack. Margaret Miskie & Sophia Albright waiting at station. Saw them all off. After dinner played double solitaire with Dorothy. Went over to enquire how Miss Milne was - somewhat brighter.
Did not go in. Went to the Bijou with Dorothy and saw a picture called "Thin Ice" - not too bad. Wrote to Aunt Maggie. Did some weeding in the afternoon. Raining all Morning but cleared up in the afternoon - not too hot.
Thursday July 15th.
Paris Greened the potatoes before breakfast as Mr. Clifton is away on his holidays and Charles cannot walk on the rough ground. Marked the tennis court. In the afternoon went with Dorothy for the Mail, (half holiday at office) then to Miss Leslie's to see if she could come to play tennis, then to store to get some Egyptian cotton to make gowns for Myself. Charles and I got Mr. Beattie's car and went out to call on Mr. Robert Oswald's, Mr. Hugh Sloan's and Mr. John Oswald's. My first calls in the country - enjoyed them very much. Got out at McDonald House Corner. When we came back and did some shopping as Forward Movement Committee to meet here to-night, Dot
and I made sandwiches. She and Florence Leslie played tennis. Cleared out pigeon holes in my desk. Forward Movement Committee - only 4 Members came - Messrs. W. J. Ross, Wm. Ross, J.C. Milne & Jno. Oswald. Went down town at 9 o'clock for ice cream bricks. Dot went to dance at Biehn's Hall with Stan Routhrin. Fire in Grate. Slight frost at night.
Friday July 16th.
Went down town for meat. Did some weeding. Made a pair of bloomers for Dorothy (by hand) Went to Mrs. Beattie's to see if she was going to Mrs. Carter's tea. Went with her, Mrs. Ferguson, Mrs. Biehns & Mrs. Crow. We intended to call on Mrs. B's but met her coming out of the house. Went to tea. About 40 there. After tea (called at Tuer's on way home, Charles and I went to call on the Bell's friends. Miss Nettie Bell and Mrs. Evans. Dorothy and Florence Leslie played tennis and then Dorothy went to a dance at Ethel Reid's. Very cool.
Saturday July 17th.
Nice day. Did some weeding in the Morning. Called at Miss Smellie's for
Mr. Jas. Smellie's address. Put new yoke on Dorothy's yellow silk gown. Went down town in the morning. Went down again in the afternoon to do some shopping. Called at Tuers on way back to see if Mr. Tuer could play tennis. Took the air bed over to Miss Milne's. Dorothy, Mr. Caldwell, Florence Leslie and a Mr. Jno. Milne played tennis. Went down town at night to get some chocolates to send Clare for her birthday, some bathing caps, etc. sewed button on Dot's rain coat, finished her night gown and repaired her sweater yoke and got this written in at 12.15 p.m. (Called a Mrs. M.A. Halliday's in the afternoon).
Sunday July 18th.
Rained hard from 4 a.m. until about 10 a.m. Charles, Dorothy and I went to church. Charlie, Frances & Dorothy started for Oliphant about 1.30. Some scurrying to get Dot ready - hunt up boat flags, write note to Clare to send with chocolates as birthday greeting. Mother came up with Charlie. I went to S.S. & after S.S.
called at Biehn's for Mother. She stayed with us for tea. Mr. McNeel was up for tea, too and went to church with us. Mother went home when we went to Church. Fine sermon. Did sentry go with Charles for awhile after church. Wore my suit.
Monday July 19th.
Wrote {Ryrie?} Bus. and parcelled up my Jewellry and sent to them to be repaired. Also wrote Murray Kay re. vests addressed Dorothy's trunk and got it expressed by noon train & wrote card to Mr. McCarrel. Typed 25 letters to Mrs. Ferguson's old pupils asking them to act as committee and had some telephoning re addresses. Went down town in the afternoon. Wrote to Walk. over Shoe Shine Store about oxfords. Called at Miss Milne's, Mrs. M.A. Halliday's, Tuer's and did some weeding after tea, and then went to see Mrs. Caldwell about 9 p.m. as had not been feeling well. Alma Halliday was to come home from Guelph to-night. Lottie was coming with her. Cool at night - wore coat in the Morning.
Tuesday July 20th.
Went down town for meat. fine day. Cleaned up Dorothy's room and the drawers in the spare room. (Guest room right expression now.) Helped Mrs. Ryan hull gooseberries and stem cherries. Strung some beads to go to the Mission box for the Indians. Mrs. Tuer called to return some books. After tea Wilfred Davison came up to learn a little about playing tennis. I played with him and then Charles gave him a few swift serves. Charles went to enquire for Miss Milne. Alma did not come home until to-night.
Wednesday July 21st.
Weeded my three flower beds at the back. Went down to Miss Milne's to try on my dress. Helped Mrs. Ryan get black cherries ready to preserve. Typed list of canvassers and districts for soldier's Memorial canvass and took them down town. Beattie and went down town. Typed Dorothy's story "The Great Unanswerable." Wilfred Davison & Mr. Caldwell were here playing tennis after tea in preparation for the Tournament. Went over to enquire for Miss Milne. M.A's left for Southampton to-night . Weeded bed at tennis court after tea.
Thursday July 22nd.
Made a pink satin camisole for Dorothy and did some darning. Cut suckers of {off} tomatoes while Charles and Mrs. Ryan staked and tied them up. Went over to the park to see Jack McDonald & Mr. Caldwell play tennis. (Before that went to Post Office for Mail as half holiday at office.) The pole broke so they came here to finish their game. Got them some lime juice. After tea called at Biehn's to ask Mrs. Biehn to got to Brown's. Mr. Fry drove Charles, Mrs. Beattie, Mrs. Biehn and me out to Mr. Walter Brown's as Mrs. Shouldice going away to-morrow to attend the christening party. Waited for ceremony - Baby Lloyd William. After we got home I went to Leslie's with gift for Indian box. Heard Florence on Tuer's verandah so walked up with her. Visited with Mrs. Leslie and Florence and Marion walked home with me. Wrote note of congratulation to Duncan.
Friday July 23rd.
Wet day. very heavy shower. Took S.S. collection down in the morning and Charles and I went to Charlie's store to
got rugs for Clare's bedrooms and did some other camp shopping. Did a lot of darning. Went down in the afternoon to finish camp shopping. Mr. Caldwell called. Had a note from Armand re: Mrs. Ferguson fund and announcing arrival of their baby. Wrote to Clare and Dorothy and went over to the station to post letters.
Saturday July 24th.
Very cool day - wind from north - one little shower in the Morning. Went down town for Meat. Cleared out box, drawers and closet in my room. After dinner went down for Mail and to hunt for vests etc. Came home, tried on vests, went down again. Came home, found I had forgotten to get lace for Mrs. Green to put on my gowns so went down again. Just at 6 o'clock, Clarence Davison passing so he drove me down in his car. After tea called to see if Mrs. Beattie would go up to Mother's and took the lace to Mrs. Green. Mrs. Beattie and I went up to Mother's. She was out so we wandered all around the lawn and garden.
Mother got home just as we were going to leave so we visited awhile. Met Mrs. Biehn at her door as we were coming home and went back down to Lustig's with her. Very cool night.
Sunday July 25th.
Got up at a quarter to seven. Mr. Davey called about ten o'clock for a couple of parcels which he was taking up to Clare for us. Charles and I went to church. Mother came home with me and stayed until church time at night. I went to S.S. After S.S. Mother and I viewed the garden. Met Mr. McQueen on my way to S.S. Just returned two weeks ago from England. He called to see Charles but he was asleep so he talked to Mother. Charles and I went to church. Mr. & Mrs. Hilts were there and Charles stayed to speak to them so I came on home alone. In the Morning wrote to Clare and Mrs. Davey. Cool day, wore my heavy black dress and wore my coat as well to church at night. After Church Mr. McQueen
Called and entertained us with an account of his doings in the Old Land. Wrote a letter of congratulations to Armond and Copie.
Monday July 26th.
Shampooed my hair. Gathered truck together for trunks and packed part of one trunk. Marked the tennis court. Mrs. Beattie came up and I got her some boxwood, Holly, and Chinese Woolflower. Also cleared out Shumac. Went down town, at noon helped Charles put up wire on verandah for vines. Went to to some shopping after dinner. came home, got wool flowers & Shumac for Mother, did some mending. Went up to Mother's. Mr. McQueen came for tea. played seven-up. Mr. Caldwell and Wilfred Davison played tennis here after tea.
Tuesday July 27th.
Packed the trunks, went down town. Left on noon train for Oliphant. Jessie Leslie went up to O. Sound on train. Duncan, Nell and Doug met us in Wiarton. Did some shopping and came
out with a loaded car. Had dinner. Kept score for Charles and Duncan at Golf Links. Clare & Dorothy playing too. Walked up to the post office with Clare and went for a launch ride in the Naidauac. Had supper. Charlie, Alice, Doug and Nell here and the rabbits were centre of attention. (Doug's thoroughbred rabbits sent him by his uncle Archie). Dorothy at Dance in Wiarton.
Wednesday July 28th. Cool day. Rained in Morning. Wrote to Mother, Mrs. Ryan and Blanche Gillies. Went down to the dock to see the boys work at boat. Was over at Charlie's cottage. Duncan drove us part way to Dr. Middlebro's cottage (car broke down on the road so had to walk part way) to see him re: Mrs. Caldwell. Invited to a shower at Forsyth's for Dan McDonald. Did not go. Charles had to go back to Miss Milne's funeral. Alice came over in evening and we were learning to play bridge. (Jack and I against Clare and Nell.) Isabel and Doug played cribbage at other cottage. Dorothy at a dance at Margaret Kastner's.
Thursday July 29th.
Very, Very windy night. Went to McKenzie's to
telephone Charles to bring deed forms for Mr. Moore. Told me Mr. Green had shot Bert Cavil this morning. Finished embroidering my doily which I worked at yesterday also. Jack & Duncan busy fitting window sashes. Played Bridge in the evening. Jack and I against Nell and Duncan. Wrote to Frank. Started centre piece.
Friday July 30th.
Rained in the Morning - cool day. Put putty on some window frames. Kept at it all afternoon until about four o'clock when I went up and cleaned up the shavings out of my room where Jack had been fitting sashes. Charles got back with Charlie about 2 o'clock. Continued putty work until dark. Worked at my new centre piece in evening.
Saturday July 31st.
Wrote to Mrs. Green and to Stan. Fresh air Fund enclosing cheque for $9.05 collected by Doug. Lizzie Salt and her brother arri ved in car with Jim Hetherington and another boy.
Duncan took them for a launch ride. Bad thunderstorm in the night. Cool to-day. Barometer still falling. Did some more puttying. Went down to dock to see "Ginger" let down into water to get engine in and walked up to Walsh's Hill with Charles for a walk. Had a fire over at Charlie's so we all went over. Wrote to Mother & Mrs. Luttrell.
Sunday August 1st.
Quite cool - wore My black dress and a sweater. Dick arrived last night. In the morning we walked down to Davey's to see Mrs. Davey. Went to church. Mr. Pilkie of O Sound preached. Fire at Charlie's. We went for a launch ride after church. All went to Charlie's and the whole bunch sang hymns. Rained almost all night.
Monday August 2nd.
Beautiful day. Dick, Nell, Dug, Duncan went fishing. Jack and Charlie busy in "Ginger." Dorothy & I worked at windows. Dick left about 1.30 for Toronto. Charlie, Alice, Clare, Nell, Dug and Isabel & Duncan went into Wiarton - all to come back in
Charlie's car. Mended Charles pyjamas. Knit some of Dorothy's sweater - sash. Worked at My centre-piece. Walked up to Jas. Clarke's to meet the party who were playing golf. Walked down to the dock to see how boat was getting along. Duncan, Alice, Dorothy and Nell played bridge. cool at night.
Tuesday Aug. 3rd.
Wrote a letter for Charles. Beautiful day. Mended a sheet. Knit a little at Dorothy's sash. Puttied two windows and a quarter. Went out for a launch ride. Men putting windows in for Regatta Day. Wrote to Harry Dobie, M. Caldwell, and Mrs. Cavill. Bert died at 3 o'clock Monday.
Wednesday Aug. 4th.
Regatta Day - beautifu day. Went out to put out buoys. darned Dorothy's stockings. Dinner set for 12 o'clock an hour late as usual. Went down to the dock for awhile, came back to see if Alice would go down. "No." Went back for awhile, came up with Dorothy. Went back. Went up to P.O. for mail. Harold Wright
drove me back. Davena and Matie Ritchie were here. Naidaiac's spark plug worked loose in the race & had to be replaced so lost the race. "Ginger" Not in shape to race. Lost all 3 cups won last year. Decorated Boat goes to Dr. Middlebro, fast launch to Dave McDonald, Naidauac Cup to Stillwell's 'Anzac.'
Dorothy and Charlie won the canoe race, Charlie came 2nd in single canoe. That "Some Halliday boy." Dorothy steered war canoe and Shore girls won.
Thursday August 5th.
Beautiful day. Knit at Dorothy's sweater sash, and worked at My tray cloth. Charlie's Sunday school arrived for a picnic. Walked down to the dock with some of them. Stayed home. Just Dorothy and I in our house (Sophy & Margaret also) and Margaret and the Babe at Charlie's. Went to P.O. for Mail. the picnic had Supper behind the cottage. After tea went out in the launch to tow the spile drver back to anchorage. (Used Regatta Day) Went down to dock to wait for Mr. Dowkes' New
boat to arrive! Walked up and back a couple of times and finally left without waiting for it. Did not arrive during the night.
Friday August 6th.
Beautiful day with cool breeze. Went down to dock to see Jack, Clare, Charles, Charlie and Nell off to Southampton in the Naidauac to bring Tim Neelands up to Oliphant. They went armed with a warrant for Tom and decorated with detective stars etc. Went down to the dock again to superintendent Doug's Swim. Got him dressed. Found he had left his hat in the "Jutland" so went back with him to get it. Wrote to Mrs. Ryan - took it up to the P.O. Wrote to Mrs. McCarrel, Miss Anna Ross and Frank. Pearl Buckley & Mabel Armstrong. (congratulations in passing Normal Entrance) Folks arrived about 6 p.m. with Tom. Swept 3 upstairs rooms & stair and got front room ready for Tom. Walked down to dock to meet them. Made up list for Regatta prizes which were
presented at Charlie's verandah.
Saturday Aug. 7th.
Worked at My centre-piece. Went up for the Mail with Clare. Tom, Jack, Charlie, Nell, Duncan, Doug and Julius went fishing. Clare, Alice, Margaret, Jean, and I went in for a dip in the afternoon. After tea Alice and I went for a walk away down the shore. Very hot day. Spent an hour & a half waiting for a phone call & then cancelled it.
Sunday Aug. 8th.
Very hot. We walked up to the big hill about 6 miles by the time we got back. Went to church. Mr. Campbell preached. Thunder storm while we were there. Ferna Halliday was there. (Staying with the Davies' for a few days) Mrs. Struthers and Mr. Ede Sang solos at church. Had a Swim before breakfast. After dinner sat out behind clump of bushes in front of Charlie's with bunch of both families.
Monday Aug. 9th.
Men decide to go on fishing trip so great scurry getting them ready. Had my morning swim. Went to dock to see them

off. Went up to the post office to register a letter for Clare (rode up on running board of King's car - Floyd Buell going away. He and Marian are engaged. Walked back. Walked down to Davey's with Dorothy to see Ferna. Mr. Davey drove us up to P.O. and Ferna stayed for awhile, then Dorothy and I walked back with her. Worked at my tray cloth. Wrote to M. Caldwell, Mr. M.A. and Aldyth Hooper and played a game of bridge after Alice went home - took her place. Rained quite hard for awhile about 3 o'clock and was quite windy.
Tuesday Aug. 10th.
Looked grey in morning but cleared up and is fine day. Isabel and I went in for morning dip. Wrote to Miss Small, Mother, Miss McEachran. Worked at my tray cloth. Played bridge in the evening. Clare and I against Nell and Duncan. Dorothy got a letter from Doug Nickle which made her very angry. She went into Wiarton to a dance with Harold Wright.
