26 a little rain in morning. Fine but dull the rest of the day. Mozes {Baumheier} had a raising bee Tuesday. George Whiltord was hurt at in the {forearm?}, he had to have a doctor Our boys were at the bee in afternoon Pa had a little boy helping him saw rotten posts, 15de I dug the parsnips, the most of them were half rotten, I think the frost injured them, since there was so little more Mrs Brown called in the afternoon

30 Ugly day gloomy cold wind, looks now 4 P.M. like snow. Murdy pan bread and {piece?} boiled ham. In this month Vesuvius was in violent rupture some towns and villages destroyed, and around the last of the month, there was heavy rain which made mud of the ashes and it destroyed what the lava left. And on the 18th the earthquake in San Frisco destroyed a great part of the business section of the city, it was followed by fire which {consumed?}
