In his early diaries David is teaching in various schools in Waterloo County. From 1876-1890 he is on the Board of Examiners of Public School Teachers for Waterloo County.  As his family expands, he moves more into farming and purchases a farm west of New Dundee in 1885. Always active in the Mennonite Conference of Ontario, he is ordained deacon of Blenheim Mennonite Church in 1889 and remains in that capacity until 1921.  In many other ways, he provides leadership within the Mennonite community in Waterloo County and beyond.
