The Moir home is a hub of activity as he is both a farmer and the local post master.  He is also actively involved in local politics, education, and church affairs. He starts the diary when he inherits his father’s farm and continues throughout the years as telephones are installed, and other changes take place in the community including the beginning of rural mail delivery which signals the end of his post office. In 1904 his son Byron is tragically killed in a train accident.
