James is middle-aged, single and living with his sister Elizabeth who keeps house for him.  He had listed himself as a carpenter in the 1901 census when his older brother was managing the family farm.  But when his brother died in 1905 from blood poisoning caused by an injury, James takes over management of the farm.  He attends several silo-filling bees as silos were being introduced to the area and changing the rural landscape.
