Thomas and his brother Sid are farmers in the livestock business buying, feeding, breeding, butchering and selling cattle, pigs, sheep and poultry.  In the early years Thomas does the butchering of their and other people’s livestock and Sid transports the meat to Toronto and other urban areas.  In 1894 Thomas serves as butcher for the local beef ring.  In July 1891, Thomas’ regular entries are interrupted when his four children contract scarlet fever.  By the 9th day, his only daughter Fanny has died.
