Shooting away the old year or Should be Shooting in the new year put out the Basswood canoe Went to the Little Island south side got some corn Went with the canoe to the Head of the Island turned it over so to have Ready wind changed Raining Began to Blow very hard took a sleep at night almost Blew the house down mending my coat Blowed in the Master Ball in Kintail {illegible}

the 2nd 1862 Mr James Cameron Island January the Wind Last night put Down the Plaster fixing Boards on the cracks stuffing the cracks with Rags & Paper very frosty if it holds on the ice will take slippery walking Put the Blanket on Gray cold NorWest Wind Seen the New Moon Wish if there was no wind the ice would take


3rd Allens Birth Day, a cold Day the ice is thinking to take anchor ice commenced going down I Believe it is taken Between here and Christies tonight not taken on the north side only little past the little Island I seen this evening what I did not Believe before that is the Sun Moon and Star I seen the 3 of them a little Before Sunset water raising close to shore a frosty night

4 Ice made acrofs to Christees Went to Head of the Island caught a Live Duck Bitter cold Anchor ice going Down Drew some Drags air holes Before the Door But small foxes crossed last night from Christees went in the Evening to the Little Island put out 3 or 4 bushes I think the channel will Jam to night open on Both sides of the Hog Island the Wind high and cold Mending sox

5 The Ice took Last night I crofsed to Henerys took supper there Saluted about being married some air holes Found a Black Duck on the ice at the head of the Island Drawing my canoe Water Raising very High

Councillers in the Williamstown to Day I Bushing the ice to Francis Island East wind crofsed went up to the store great Joy wishing me Bought of A Summers 3 1/2 lb Butter 2/6 4 1/2 lbs 3/- Stove Polish -/5 Butter Plate -/4 L2..10..in Cash to Return the Pail a Treat at Davids -/7 1/2 Paid Paid AJ Baker 3 Dollars & 70 cents got a Recept a Treat Bakers Paid -/3 in Nicholsons greatly Put out Jim Hopkins came acrofs Angus suple on the Bosure caught a Duck at Kenneths

7th I crofsed to Henerys with my Pants to Make Storm some Henery Fishing EEls Baking Begun the Barrel of Flour made 2 Pills of Poison went to Bush the upper Road Very Rough Fox Tracks Plenty the Water higher than ever seen it not so cold now Making candle

8th went home with the pail school Meeting Bought of AJ Baker 2 chairs 2/6 (a Treat Paid cotton Bale paid) went the Upper Road Took Dinner at Tillenues

9th Drawing Drags 2 Foxes playing on the ice But Don't come to the Poison Fine soft Day cutters crofsing to Salmon River EEl Fishers in the Big Bay on the other side of Rofs'es Island

10th Bushing the upper Point Road Went to Henery for my Trousers Gave her an order on AJ Baker for 1/3 which makes us Clear till this Date Henery cut my hair Raining East Wind changed West Wind Blowing hard & Raining I am afraid this will spoil the ice But if not it will help to crush down the hills of ice Henery making a Wash Board a Team Broke in on Summers Island where the ice {illegible} water fell away Lewis Bosell

Mr James Cameron Island January 11th I went to Williamstown Left my axe at AJ Bakers Found a Duck on the ice left it on the end of Davids Island Treat at Bakers 1 worth of sweetys Paid a Party at Jessemas cold night

Sunday 13th Preaching on the Front Began to snow I came home in at John Mr Gillis in the Gore very {illegible} Lewis Bosell Poorly (G ot 8)

13th Drawing Drags

14th Lashey came Found a Bottle I went to see Lewis Bosell took my shirt to Henerys wife to wash to charge me 2 1/2 for washing at Nicholsons took home there Bottle A Great Talk about War Lashey went for an axe Broke the Whippletree I am thinking of going to Salmon River tomorrow

15th Lashey came had his axe Made a Bargain with him to chop me 50 Cords of Maple & Beech for 2/3 a cord to have it chopped all on the 1st of March a Great storm of E Wind & Snow

16th Lashey Began to chop Drew some Drags the old cat came in the house a Blustering Day with wind & Drift

17 stormy Lashey went to for his Provision Drawing Drags chopping stove Wood made a Waterhole washed my feet South West Wind put some wood in the Cellar

18th Training in Williamstown I went to A Summers the Lotterry 2/6 Slept in John Summers with Andrew Summers took supper & Breakfast

19th Sunday came home stopt at Henerys had Dinner went Down to see Lewis Bosell Got my shirt at Henerys 2 1/2 for washing not paid

Monday 20th of January To 1 order to Lashey for Tobacco on AJ Baker Lashey went Took a Quart of Whiskey Brought home my Axe From Bakers East wind snowing Blowing & Drifting Lashey in the house all Day

21st (St Agnefs Night) Drawing Drags Lashey chopping Breaking the Road Tried the Dice twice the same turned for me & ----

22nd Drew some Drags Lashey chopping snowing E Wind Fixing the Marsh hay in the Barn

23 Lashey went in the afternoon to A Summers for Flour weighed it for Lashey 22 lbs Bag & all at 3 cents all he said that there was 32 but 22 is the Weight drew a Drag Fine Day a Thawing some chopped 1/2 of this Day

24th I crofsed to summerstown Bought of A Summers 1 Pair of Braces 1/6 Bought of AJ Baker crackers & cheese -/6 Paid) To 1/3 for subscription for a young Woman From Brockville Whose name is Mary Lawlor who had Good Luck at having a young Daughter at Mat Murphys The Father supposed to be a Man By the name of Quinn a hardware Merchant but there is another Man she gives in two or too Brought 6/3 cash & candles 1/ 1/2 lbs

25th Robie Burns Birth Day Me Very Unwell Right side of my head very sore and my Teeth aching all from cold I suppose took some Ginger A Very stormy Day since about Daylight this morning Baking

26th Sunday Lashey & Me alone a Little Better this morning had EEls for Breakfast Stormy from the West not very well this Evening my face is very sore House warm cattle such as they are are all well & hearty Banks of snow all round

27th Lashey commenced a Big Maple Tree cold came home cut 4 Logs of it Drawing Drags Breaking Roads cut a Waterhole clearin out the cats snow pretty deep

28th Thrashing Wheat & Fanning 1 Bushel My Measure Lashey chopt I seen a Fox crofsing

Went to the Bush to split Began to Rain spoiled the axes Grinding Lashey went to the store I gave him an order on a {illegible} for 13 1/2 lb Pork 5/7 1/2 11 lbs Beef 2/9 which came to 9/4 1/2 70 1 Bar of Soap 1/3 1 Quart Whiskey 7 1/2 1/10 1/2 New Moon to night

30th I went to Summerstown Bought of AJ Baker 1 pair of Braces -/5 sweetys & Fred paid this) Went to Williamstown got a Ride from J Cattanach & then From Jim McIntyre a treat at Patnos -/6 Bruce on the Front Collector of customs Angus was Bad with a Boil on his neck

31st in Williamstown putting in the straw in the Barn Bought a Pork of Gat Beau 139 lbs From & I went for it

1st of February in Williamstown cut the Pork & salted it came home took a 4 Boxes of Segars to David Summers from Charles Olders David Killing a cow Bought of AJ Baker 6 lb of cheese 2/- 1/2 lb Saleratus -/4 1/2 lb Tea 2/- came home Lashey all Right

3rd Baking Drawing Drags Lashey chopping all Day Very Cold Volunteers in Williamstown to Day East Wind Lashey at the Big Beech Tree

4th Thrashed a Bushel of Wheat Lashey Broke a peice out of his axe at another Beech cleaning the pipes a very fine afternoon A great Smoke over the way of Salmon River as the Lines like form here Great Dreams

5th Lashey to the store Bought of A Summers 100 Flour 30 lb 4/6 Tea 2/3 Saleratus -/3 Cash -/7 1/2 10 lb of Pork for myself

6th me Washing Lashey Broke his axe Went to Salmon River for another

7th came Back with an axe Drawing drags & cutting Drags Heard that is was Mr Patrick Buchanan's house that was on Fire on the 4th

13 I started fro Williamstown Got 2 Dollars from David Summers the First payment for the squartimber stick Gave Grendell Streeter 10/- had 3 treats at Davids Bought of A Summers 1/2 lb Tob 1/- Lottery Tickets 2/6 plaster Got a Ride From Doctor Shaver Got Present of Lance From the Doctor Bought of AJ Baker Treat -/4 & -/3 of nuts at old Sniders took supper there

14th in Williamstown Valentine Day A Great Ball at D Summers over 100 couple

15th Ver sick with a pain in Williamstown

19th helping Lashey to split Lashey to the store got an order for 8/8 on A Summers Taxes running about plenty a storm of snow to night

Sunday 23rd Lashey & me cutting holes for EEls got none Set 2 More Bates for the Fox one at the Upper Point 3 in the Bay Back of the House now Lashey set Traps for Rats A Storm Brewing I here the Fort Covingtons Bells sound so plain

24th St Matthias Day Stormy East Wind Drifting & Blowing Baking

25th Lashey got a Rat cold Day Lashey Dreads to Move to the Bush it is after 10 oclock now Drew some Drags Snow uncommon Deep in the Bush Began the North East half of the hay in the Barn the South East half is Finished cold Windy Bad Kind of Weather no right thaw yet

26th Went to the Head of the Island to see the poison chopping Stove Wood Laying By a small store of Stove Wood a Large Blister on the upper right Gum whats the cause I don't know not sore cold East wind Grinding Lasheys axe Looks as we were going to have another storm no such a thing as crofsing on the ice with deep snow & water if his wood was all split I dont think he has more than 20 cords and then it will take him some time to do that is to split & pile

27th Drawing Wood to the house Lashey chopping East Wind storm in the Morning West Wind storm in the afternoon all night Took up his Traps very Deep snow

Saturday March the 1st 1862 helping Lashey to Split March came in Stormy Like a Lion I suppose it will go out Like a Lamb Lashey to the Store Got a Letter or Valentine From a Very Loving Peice as it has a Warm turn in its contents Gave Lashey an order on A Summers for 4/5 1/2 to myself Pork 4/2 The Ice almost impossible to Travel (Postage 7 cents) Sunday the 2nd A fine Day

3rd Shrove Monday Lashey Chopping the Hicory Maple Tree all nots Lent himm 13 lbs of Flour Bag & all Baking most of the Day Stormy East wind

4th Shrove Tuesday Lashey Making an Hand Sleigh for himself Stormy Rain Snow & Wind

5th Ash Wednesday Lashey Chopping the Ironing & Mending Stormy some

6th Drawing Drags helping Lashey to split 1 Tree I see Great crofsing to & From Salmon River hurted Grey in the Deep Snow or crust

7th A Fine Day helping Lashey to split Ducks for the First I seen going Down Christee & Wife here brought a very fine iron Wedge to see Gave them Salt for nothing wanting to Buy hay for his cows Lent him the inch augur Making a Bargain for to Keep his cow to Pay me in sugar for the Hay

8th Lashey went to hunt cleaning the pipes took home a Drag Killed a Rat a Very fine Day Cattle what there is is all hearty

Frist Day of Spring I went to Summerstown brought my Boots to Suply to Fix -/7 1/2 Received From Mr David Summers 276 cash Bought of AJ Baker crackers & cheese /7 1/2 paid) To 3 Treats of Davids 2/6 Paid this Went with D McGreggor to Salmon River Paid Peter Buchanan 10/- Got the Loan of a Bottle & 3 1/2 Pints Paid Norman 15 cents I owed him 2 Treats at John McGregors 1/9 stopt at Morris's Coming Back stopt at Lukes come to Summertown Seen John Duncans Son after hay for Ned McGillivary David McLean came Down the Road with Mat Christee here for hay got it got the herald From AJ Baker paid Mrs Bone 1/2

21st Stormy Lashey commenced the sleigh 22 Lottery Night spent at Davids 1/3 Seen Angus & Jim Grant & John McGreggor Henery & I at Sniders all night got my Bag at Nicholsons Mary Christie & Christee here Bought a Quart on credit had Breakfast at Sniders got a Bottle of Poison from Jo Henery & I came to the Island Bought of A Summers 16 Bag & all Pork 5g Butter 2+9 A Very Fine Day

24th Lashey & me at the sleigh one of the Fortunate Days the 24th is

25th Lady Day Finished the sleigh got a pair of Lines From Lashey he owes me 4 lb Flour Lashey splitting in the Bush Good Crofsing on the took home a Load on the sleigh hens not Laying yet

26th Went to Williamstown Stopt till Saturday came to the Front got 5/- for David Summers

27th 28th Williamstown 28 got 1/3 From AJ Baker 1 pair of mits From A Summers

31st Last Day of March Raining stopt at Thomas Munroes took Breakfast came home the Dog Poisoned Raining Drew a Load of Wood to 1 Calf Skin From James R Grant Tanner Williamstown 3/6 I Doctored the Dog so he got well Lashey to hunt at Ferguson Island

1st of April all Fools Day so called by the Anchients I went to Salmon River with 2 Bushels of Wheat 1 Rat 17 cents cash Bought of Buchanan Japanese Tea 1/3 to 1/2 lb sugar -/3 Returned the Bottle & 1 to Norman Bought of Norman 1 Quart -/ 7 1/2 1/2 lb candles -/6 on credit to 3 Loaves at the Bakers 1/3 Took my Dinner at Mr Morris's Talking about the Hay stopt at Lukes A Summers at Hopkins came home Lashey here Christie here for Hay got it Andrew Summers a Bee John Son on John Camerons Place

2nd Blackbirds Gray Birds & I think it is cranes I seen twice now but I am not certain that come to Day Raining some Lashey to Salmon River Gave him an order on A Summers 1 1/2 Wheat 1 lb Tobacco Christee here for hay took it over for him 5/- charge him had a Mefs of Salted Eggs for the first at home 2 Cranes Before the Door on the ice

Robins came Baking crofsing Summer's Road ice seems to be good yet thought the Feathered inhabitants of the spring came and some of them is almost Lost to see so much ice and snow and more appear and more. Lots of hay & straw Lashey Came with his Flour I helping him to split the Maple Tree crofsing yet

5th Lashey to A Suimmers for the Remaining part of the Order I Gave him 12 lbs of Pork 5/- Making his mits Washing Fellending Irening Lashey went to Tom Cotters for his spear or to see Phillips Girls Snowing & Blowing crofsing Good yet ice opened about this time Last Year

6th Sunday Lashey came preparing to go to Hunt with Jim Hopkins to the Place they call Soft Wood went off to get Mary Christee & the 2 Girls came with the hens 1 Rooster & 2 hens 1 Tom Cat to Leave here till they come Back Great Fighting of the Cocks Put on my new Fine coat to Wear Lent Lashey 6 of My Traps Snowing & Blowing some

7th Christee to Keynon Mary & the other Grild stopt here coming Back from Summerstown I wrote a Letter for her to a Gentlemen in Fort Covington J Moore by name sold me one of the Hens for Flour Got Great news concerning Francis Girl Catherine Drawing wood from the upper Point to the hill cant go to the BankBut went with one Load Lent them a Bag went for {cut off} and they were away Good crust pretty good sugar weather

8th Came home with the Bag John More & Henery Birch at Christees along with Mary all night

9th I & Bill went to James McElwains for hay that night went to the Baptist Minister to be Married James Lucretia Laura Elisabeth Emanuel Bill Laviniah & Myself Paid 5/- Gave me a certificate Mr Webb gave 3/9 for Stopt all night

10th James came Part of the way with us home Lashey & James Hopkins came home from hunting Ice opened in some spots people crofsing a Foot

11th Fixing the canoes Drawing Wood Teams crofsing at Lancaster Lavinia Washing

12th swallows came ice Jamming Drawing some Wood

13th Palm Sunday took in 6 Eggs

14th Drawing some wood Shooting Began Loons & Wild Geese Roaring

15th A Fox Left on the Island Emmanual & Bill came Fishing EEls got 11

16th 3 Lambs to Day a canoe Going Down Norht side with 2 in it at night Lashey came

17th I went to A Summers Bought 19/4 worth of stuff Bought of AJ Baker 1 lb Cut Tobacco Promised to go with the {illegible} from Peter Grants for Donald Mc Pherson Lashey Grinding his axe

18th Our Duncans Birth Day Good Fridy The River Alive with Drift Wood Saw Logs cord wood Boards Fence Rails Ha{illegible}ed & square Timber got 2 EEls in the mud Drawing to the Bank Lashey commence the Big Maple Tree cut 1 Log shot a Duck for the First one I ever seen him shoot Raining some hens not Laying very well sheep and Gray hearty

Cloudy this morning the Sund dont Dance a Sign of a very hard year the Sheep laid on the other Lamb and Killed it Lashey crossed to Tom Cottery a Fine Day 2 Buildings came down with the high Water on the night of the 19th The Hogansburgh Mill & Mannings Storehouse we went to Mr Morris's Lashey Livinia and me the water very high

21st Took home her chest called at Mavilles Found a square stick on the way coming Found a Canoe Lashey chopping Began to Rain Raining all night East Wind

22nd The Water Log Moved with the Wind Went around the Island Fixing the Big Canoe Found a nest under the Barn Let out the sheep & Lambs St Georges Day Seen a Kingfisher for the First

23 St Georges Day Merrie England Set 2 Traps for the Fox Snowing Blowing Freezing

24th helping Lashey to split his Maple Trees cold Day but Fine

25th Donald Young alek here for his Boards Lashey went to hunt Fixing the cart for to Draw Wood getting a Rat or 2 now & again circle around the sun West wind Sap runs yet Angus came Emmanuel came

Sunday Went to the Little Island Steamers going in abundance Seen a Fox on the Lane all alone

12th Livinia Sick Lashey came planted 2 Rows more of Potatoes Lashey seen Angus on the Front has a Letter Christees came home gave Lashey his Knife setting Fires harrowed the Garden Fixing the Red Canoe some Wind high

13th Lashey crofsed to see if Henery would come to split his Logs Tried the Perch wind too high in the Evening caught 9 Perch for the first Hollowing to Charlie to come

14th Charlie Passed Henery splitting Logs I went to Charlies Mr Morris & Mrs Morris & Bill here I & Charlie to Williamstown Left the canoe at the Raft could not Pafs

15th came home went to Fish caught 24

29th Drawing Drags cutting stove wood some Drops of Rain Broke the Iron on the End of the Whippletree

30th Went to the head of the Island chopping Stove Wood setting Fires in the Marsh but it dont Burn very well Froze some last night a Fine Day to Day East wind circle around the Moon and the East Wind a Raising not much ice around the shore Blackened the stoves no snow on the Ground

31st Last Day of the Year Fanning nearly a Bushel of Wheat Feeding all the Cattle Well Chopping Stove Wood A Fine Day set up till near 1 O Clock Firing away the old year and Firing in the New Year washed my Feet cleaned my Gun Firing with the Pistol
