Vincent is in his eighties when he and his wife leave their homestead in 1878 and move in with their son-in-law in Bloomfield until their own new home is ready for them in 1881.  Their son-in-law owns a 10-room house on 50 acres of farm land opposite his cheese factory.  It is the most modern house in Bloomfield with a furnace, running water and a speaking tube connecting the kitchen and master bedroom.  Vincent makes intermittent entries about the moves, deaths, family activities and regular attendance at his local Quaker meeting.
