Ella Maurer's Diary For the Year 1927

We were living on the farm in North Woolwich. Happy Days!

January, 1927

1 Saturday. Fine and very cold. We had New Year's dinner here and the following company - Mr & Mrs Sim. Weaver, Mr. & Mrs Lincoln Weaver, Willard, Mildred, Doris and Howard and Aubrey Lawson. Walter took Mr. Bergman's meat to Floradale this morning.

2 Sunday. Changeable weather We drove to church & S. School with Enoch's in the sleigh.

3 Monday. Fair and not very cold. Ella did the washing and Vernon was drawing manure. Walter went to Floradale to vote. Tfhe old council were elected nameley - Alex Forbes reeve, N Snider d. reeve, W Veitch, Almon Snider and Tom Hemmerich councillors. Callers here today were - Jno. Stange, Addison Reist, Noah Miller, Esther and Ruth Miller.

January, 1927

4 Tuesday. Quite mild. Snowed all day. Walter was away butchering at Jos. Gingrich all day. Vernon took a load of grist to Addison Riest, and got it chopped. Mrs. Conrad Schmidt died at Elmira today.

5 Wednesday. Colder & snowing and blowing. Walter visited Farncombe's and Edler's this p.m. Ella visited Mrs. Elmer King and Walter & Ella were both there for tea.

6 Thursday. Very stormy. Walter went to Elmira this morning. Ezra Mauver brought 4 pigs home for him and was here for dinner.

7 Friday. Clear and very cold. 10 below zero this morning. We butchered a pig for ourselves today. Noah Miller helped this forenoon and was here for dinner. Clarence and Lloyd Farncombe called on Walter this p.m. Mrs. Schwindt was buried this afternoon.

January, 1927.

8 Saturday. Ideal winter's day. Clear and cold. Lincoln Edler brought a cow Walter bought from him and he and his father were here for dinner. Other callers - Clarence & Lloyd Farncombe, Andrew and Norman Henderson, Norman and Laura Miller and Aubrey Lawson.

9 Sunday. Fair and cold east wind blowing. We went to Woolwich church and S. School this afternoon and to Earl Miller's for tea.

10 Monday. Lovely morning Started to snow this afternoon. Walter went to Elmira Monthly Fair today and when he returned he went over to Otto Miller's and skinned a horse that died last night, also went up to Henderson's. Wesley Witzel called this afternoon. Sam Weber died suddenly today. Louis {Ludwig} Schmermund was buried yesterday.

January, 1927

11 Tuesday. Fine and cold. Walter went to Sim's and Linc's this morning and to Moses Reists sale this afternoon. Vernon was drawing manure. Callers - Harvey Reist, Andrew & Norman Henderson, Norman Atkinson and Whitney Fenton.

12 Wednesday Cold & raw. Walter butchered 2 pigs at Otto Miller's today and killed a beef when he got home. Vernon was drawing manure. Annie Schneider and her two cousins Edna & Margaret Walter from Wallace visited Ella and were here for tea. Other callers - Enoch & Irwin Schneider & Geo. Edler.

13 Thursday Milder. Snowed all day. Walter shipped hogs and attended Sam Weber's funeral. Ella visited at Edmund Schwindts and we were all there for supper and the evening.

January, 1927.

14 Friday. Clear and cold. We butchered 2 pigs here for Grandpa Maurer. Grandpa, Grandma and Ezra Maurer were here all day and helped. Emerson Grove called this afternoon. Noah Miller and Walter Adler spent the evening here.

15 Saturday. Clear and very cold. 14 to 20 below zero this morning Addison & Harvey Reist were our callers.

16 Sunday. Cold. Snowflurries We went to church and to S. School this morning and rested, read and slept the rest of the day.

17 Monday. Milder. Ella did her washing this morning and Walter took her up to Grandma Krauter's where she is staying for a few days. Vernon had these callers at home here - Clarence Farncombe, John Maurer, Harvey Reist, and Norman Weigel.

January, 1927.

18 Tuesday. Not very cold. Heavy snowfall. Gingrich Bros called here and brought 2 cows from Walter.

19 Wednesday. Mild, Rained all day. Noah Miller and Walter Adler visited my men.

20 Thursday. Fine day. Eckart Otterbein, Grandpa's hired man took Ella to the station at St. Jacobs this morning and she drove home from Elmira with Walter. Tonight their neighbours and friends had a party for John Schwindt's who are moving to near New Dundee next week. Walter, Ella and Vernon were there and had a very good time.

21 Friday. Mild and foggy. Walter butchered 2 beeves here this morning and he and Enoch delivered the meat and took the piano over to Emanuel Bowman's this p.m.

January, 1927.

22 Saturday. Colder. The men did the stable work this morning and Walter was gadding this afternoon. Callers - Louis Miller Laura and Norman Miller.

23 Sunday. Fair and cold. Snowflurries. Walter & Vernon went to church & S. School this afternoon Ella felt sick so she stayed home.

24 Monday. Somewhat changeable. Walter butchered 1 pig for Geo. Schneider's at Enoch's and killed 2 for Enoch's and cut them up. Vernon was drawing manure this afternoon. Charles Miller was our caller.

25 Tuesday. Fair and cold. Walter made Enoch Schneider's sausage this forenoon and he and Enoch went to Ed. Morris's sale on the Clayton Stewart farm. Walter brought three head of cattle.

January, 1927.

26 Wednesday. Clear and very cold. 24 below zero this morning and kept cold all day. Walter and Enoch got the cattle they bought yesterday. Vernon has a bad cold.

27 Thursday. Clear and cold although milder than yesterday. Walter shipped hogs at Elmira and got the brooder he bought at Harry Klinck's. Callers - Jake Bender and Ed Bolender.

28 Friday. Milder and very windy. Walter went to Creekbank this morning and killed a beef this afternoon. Aaron K. Snyder called on him. Charles Miller spent the evening here.

29 Saturday. Mild and dreary. Walter delivered some beef in Elmira this afternoon. Callers - Noah Miller and Willard Weaver.

January, 1927.

30 Sunday. Colder with fierce wind blowing. We went to Sunday school this morning and were at Lincoln Weaver's for dinner. Sim's and Aubrey were there too.

31 Monday. Cold. Snowflurries. Walter butchered a cow this morning and took some meat to Alma this afternoon, also down to Herman Ziegler's and his Dad's. Callers were - Earl Miller, Wesley Miller, Jack Bolender, Jeremiah Bauman, Harold & E. Bell.

February, 1927.

1 Tuesday. Cloudy and windy. Ella did her washing. Walter took a load of chopping to Floradale. Israel Weber was our caller.

2 Wednesday. Windy. Snowflurries. Walter has a bad cold and feels tough. We had company for tea - Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Schmidt, Mr. & Mrs. Earl Miller and Mr. Cornelius Klassen. Leon Wagner called on Walter this p.m.

3 Thursday. Foggy and drizzly. Fierce wind blowing tonight. Walter shipped hogs at Elmira today Callers - Sam Brunkard & Israel Good.

4 Friday. Beautiful day. Vernon hauled manure this afternoon. Callers - Elmo King, Addison Reist, Nick & Howard Hoffer, Absolam Frey.

5 Saturday. Cold. Raw east wind. Our company for tea tonight - Mr. & Mrs. Louis Miller, Norman & Laura Miller. Eva Schneider visited us this afternoon. Ella's birthday. She is 36 now. Good night!

February, 1927.

6 Sunday. Dreary and milder. We went to Woolwich church and Sunday school this afternoon.

7 Monday. Lovely day. Walter went to Elmira Monthly Fair today and brought home Harry the new horse from Ed. Bender. Callers - Earl Miller & Lazarus Borovoy. Walter killed a beef when he got home and then went up to Creekbank.

8 Tuesday. Beautiful day just like spring. We butchered 2 big sows here for Sam Brunkard Noah Miller and Ezra Maurer helped. Other callers - Elmo King, Louis Miller, Enoch Schneider, Harvey & Addison Reist.

9 Wednesday. Fair and somewhat colder. The men did the chores this morning and went to Grandpa's swamp and got some poles. Callers - Sam Brunkard, Christ. Clements and another Wandering Jew pedlar.

February, 1927.

10 Thursday. Beautiful, clear cold day. Walter shipped hogs at Elmira, had his dinner at Earl's and went to Addison Stahlbaum's sale this afternoon. We spent the evening at Otto Miller's and had a fine time.

11 Friday. Clear, cold and windy Walter went to Creekbank and Alma this morning and he and Vernon cut some poles in the swamp this p.m. Callers - Noah Miller, Walter Adler, Sam Bird and Lincoln Edler.

12 Saturday. Clear, cold & windy The men brought another load of poles from the swamp this afternoon. Callers - Joe Gingrich, Almon Snider, Otto Miller and Allen Wagner.

13 Sunday. Cold, raw, east wind blowing. We went to church & S. School this morning and to Noah Miller's for dinner. Fred Soehner died yesterday at Floradale of cancer and stroke.

February, 1927

14 Monday. Snowed and stormed last. Milder, raw and foggy today. Walter took a load of grist to Floradale this afternoon. Callers - Peter Martin John Schweitzer, Lincoln Edler and Louis Miller.

15 Tuesday. Snowflurries this morning. Turned out lovely this afternoon. We butchered 2 pigs here for Edler's and Lincoln Edler was here all day and helped. Clarence Farncombe was here for dinner. Other callers - Earl Miller, Henry Atkinson, Norman & Homer Henderson and Louis Miller. Fred Soehner was buried this afternoon at Floradale.

16 Wednesday. Stormy this morning Mild & foggy. Rain tonight. Walter butchered 3 pigs at Louis Miller's today and Vernon and Ella went down for supper and the evening. Grandpa Maurer was our caller.

February, 1927.

17 Thursday. Dull, mild and foggy. Walter shipped hogs at Elmira Ella helped to quilt at Noah Miller's this afternoon and stayed for tea. Noah brought her home and spent the evening with Walter.

18 Friday. Clear, cold & windy. Walter went to Alma this morning and got a pig for Mr. Gilmour and we butchered it this afternoon. Callers - Earl Miller & Eph. Snyder. Mr. Jake Bender and daughter Ruby spent the evening here.

19 Saturday. Very cold. East wind blowing. Walter went to Conrad Schwindt's sale at Elmira this afternoon. Callers today were - Henry Atkinson, Joe Hall, Louis Miller and Jacob Brubacher.

20 Sunday. Stormy & very cold from the east. We all went to S. School this p.m. A half-witted hobo Charlie Miller by name was here for supper and the night.

February, 1927.

21 Monday. Fair and cold. We butchered a pig here for Hy. Atkinson's today and Joe Hall helped all day and was here for dinner. George Keopke and Roy Bolender were cutting wood in our bush this afternoon and were here for supper. Roy stayed for the night.

22 Tuesday. Beautiful morning. Walter butchered a cow for Enoch Schneider this morning and went to Jonathan Martin's sale this afternoon. Callers were - Enoch & Geo. Schneider Louis Miller, Joe Hall & Sim. Weaver. George Keopke and Roy Bolender were cutting wood. Noah Miller & Walter Adler spent the evening here.

23 Wednesday. Beautiful spring-like day. Walter was butchering at John Kuhl's today and killed a cattle beast when he got home. George & Roy were cutting wood. Callers - Sim. Weaver, Enoch and Jno. Kuhl & Clarence Stone. Annie Schneider spent the afternoon with Ella.

24 Thursday. Beautiful spring-like day. Vernon took Burnett's and Bender's meat to Alma this morning. Walter shipped hogs at Elmira and went to Lorck's sale this afternoon: He brought Grandma Krauter home with him. A motorist came up as far as our lane but had to turn around there as this piece of road up to the corner is bad. Simeon Burkhart was our caller.

25 Friday. Cloudy. Raw east wind blowing. Walter butchered 4 pigs at Jake Bender's today. Mrs. Noah Miller and Orpha visited, us this afternoon. Margaret came over after school and they were all here for supper.

26 Saturday. Fierce snow storm. The men worked around the barn and Charlie Miller called on them this afternoon. Ezra Maurer was here for dinner yesterday and he and Vernon got the pigs at Lorck's.

February, 1927.

27 Sunday. Fair. Snowflurries. We went to church & S. School this morning and Mr. & Mrs. Emerson Krauter, Marie and Erla were here for dinner and supper.

28 Monday. Fair. Snowflurries Ella did her washing & ironing. Vernon took Grandma Krauter up to Lincoln's this afternoon. Walter went to Alma this morning and to Floradale and Elmira this afternoon. Callers - Charlie Miller, Quincy Whale, and another man off the 8th. who is drawing gravel and broke the tongue on the sleigh out here.

March, 1927.

1 Tuesday. Clear and cold. We were busy butchering here today one big sow for Quincy Whale, one pig for Wm. Cullum and made summer sausage for Roy Norris. Ezra Maurer was here all day and helped. Lincoln brought Grandma here this afternoon.

2 Wednesday. Cold and windy. We had a quilting here today and the following ladies were here - Mrs. George Schneider, Mrs. C. Wagner, Mrs. Chas. Koepke, Mrs. Sim Weaver, Mrs. Lincoln Weaver, Doris and Howard. Mrs. Geo. Maurer, Mrs. Philip Bonn, Mrs. Ben Miller, Mrs. Earl Miller, Mrs. N. Hoffer, Mrs. Louis Miller and Grandma Krauter. Quincy Whale and Roy Norris called for their sausage, etc.

March, 1927.

3 Thursday. Clear, cold & windy Walter took Grandma Krauter down to Emerson's this morning and shipped hogs at Elmira. There was a church finance meeting here tonight and the following were here - Otto Miller, Enoch Schneider and Edwin Bender. Norman Miller came over and he and Vernon played crokinole. Wm. Cullum called for his meat and sausage.

4 Friday. Fair. Not as cold as yesterday. Walter walked around the stables and Vernon was drawing manure. Noah Miller and Ruth were here for supper. Other callers - Leon and Eldon Wagner, Homer and Norman Henderson.

5 Saturday. Fine day. Walter took a load of chopping to Floradale and 2 sows to Norman Snider's for the sale Vernon was drawing manure. Callers - Addison, Harvey & Lorne Reist, Clarence Farncombe and Noah Shoemaker

March, 1927.

6 Sunday. Foggy & dull. We went to church and S. School this afternoon. Lincoln's called in after church. Charles Miller and Emerson Stange spent the evening here

7 Monday. Changeable. Lovely morning. Turned dull & cloudy and snowed heavily this afternoon. Walter went to Elmira Fair this morning and to Floradale with a load of grist this afternoon. Ella did her washing & ironing.

8 Tuesday. Stormy this morning Very windy with snowflurries all day. Walter & Ella went to Norman Snider's sale today and had a very nice time.

9 Wednesday. Fine, sunny day. Walter was butchering at Leon Wagner's today. Vernon was drawing wood home from the bush. Callers were - Geo. Edler, Norman & Laura Miller, and Rev. E. H. Bean.

March, 1927.

10 Thursday. Fair and milder. Walter shipped hogs at Elmira. Vernon was drawing wood from the bush. Wm. Stewart called in this afternoon.

11 Friday. Warm spring-like day. Vernon drew wood home from the bush and Walter did the chores. Callers - Enoch Schneider and Charles Miller. Enoch & Irwin came down tonight to trade roosters.

12 Saturday. Cloudy & mild. Walter helped Noah take a wild cattle beast from Ferguson's to Alma and had his dinner at Geo. Bender's. Callers - Noah Miller and Walter Adler, Will King and Mr. Gingrich.

13 Sunday. Mild & showery We drove to church & S. School with the buggy today. Walter pulled a motorist out of the snow and water. Willard & Vernon Schwindt visited Vernon this afternoon.

March, 1927.

14 Monday. Cloudy & dull. Somewhat colder. Ella did her washing. Walter called at Stange's and Earl Miller's and had the following callers - Otto Miller, Chas. Miller, Eli Gingrich and his hired man. Eli Gingrich got the Edler cow and her calf.

15 Tuesday. Fair and mild. Walter was butchering at Will King's today.

16 Wednesday. Fine and mild. We butchered 2 pigs here for Archie Letson. Earl Miller helped this a.m. and was here for dinner

17 Thursday. Cloudy & mild Walter shipped hogs at Elmira. Ella had a quilting today. Mr. & Mrs. N. Snyder and Mrs. M. Eix came this morning and were here for dinner. Others here were - Mrs. Sim. Weaver, Mrs. Lincoln Weaver, Howard & Doris, Mrs. Geo. Schwindt and Melba, Mrs. Wesley Miller, Mrs. Chas. Koepke, and Mrs. Harvey Schmidt.

March, 1927.

18 Friday. Rained this morning Fine the rest of the day. The men were choring around the barn and butcher house today.

19 Saturday. Cloudy & colder. Noah Miller visited Walter this p.m. Manley Koch, one of Vernon's High School chums was buried this p.m.

20 Sunday. Colder. Snowing & storming. We went to church & S. School this afternoon. Aubrey Lawson was here for tea.

21 Monday. Cloudy & drizzly. The men were cleaning seed grain. Callers - Almon Snider, Ozias Bauman, Irvin Schneider, N.E. Miller & Walter Adler

22 Tuesday. Cold and clear. We butchered a pig here for Noah Miller. Noah was here and helped. Sam Thompson, a cattle buyer from Guelph was here for dinner. Eph. Snyder called this morning.

March, 1927.

23 Wednesday. Fair. Cold east wind blowing. Walter callers - George Schneiders, Clarence Farnecombe. Vernon went to Elmira with Allen Wagner. Mrs. Sam Bird was here for supper. We went down to Earl's tonight and had our fill of fresh maple syrup.

24 Thursday. Fair. Raw east wind. Walter shipped hogs at Elmira. George Koepke & Vernon were cutting wood in the bush all day. We went to a surprise party at Norman Snider's tonight and had a real good time.

25 Friday. Lovely spring day. We butchered a pig here for Allen Wagner and he was here helping. George Koepke & Vernon were cutting wood. Callers - Absolem Frey, Noah Miller, Mrs. Atkinson and Albert and Louis Miller.

26 Saturday. Snowed & stormed from the east all day. The men were working around the barn.

March, 1927.

27 Sunday. Fair. We drove to church & S. School this morning in the cutter but it was scratchy coming home. We had our dinner at Wesley Miller's today.

28 Monday. Fine day. Ella did her washing. Walter took a load of grist to Elmira and went to Levi Horst's sale. George Koepke & Roy Bolender were cutting wood and stayed for the night.

29 Tuesday. Fine day. George, Roy and Vernon were cutting wood. We had a quilting here and the following folks were here - Mrs. Ed. Bender, Mrs. Sol. Bender, Mrs. Edmund Schwindt, Mrs. Noah Miller and Orpha, Mrs. Otto Miller, Mrs. Leon Wagner, Mrs. Enoch Schneider, Mrs. Sam Bird, Mr. & Mrs. Ezra Maurer, Miss Miriam Maurer and Miss Tillie Mohr. Eva Schneider and Margaret Miller came after school and were here for tea too. Oscar Schneider visited Walter this p.m.

30 Wednesday. Fair. Cold wind. Walter was butchering at Farncombe's today. Enoch Schneider's were chopping and Vernon helped there this afternoon. George & Roy were in the bush. Callers - Christ. Clements & Sam Thompson.

31 Thursday Fair. Cold wind. Walter shipped hogs at Elmira today. Sam Spies moved his chopping outfit here this p.m. and they chopped for awhile. George & Roy finished cutting wood in the bush today.

Born - Mar. to Mr. & Mrs. Eph. Snyder, twins, son and daughter Mabel and Malcolm. Died - Near Jerusalem, Mrs. Onies Bauman on Mar. 29. Born - On Apr 1. to Mr. & Mrs. Allen Wagner, a daughter. Verna May. Alice Margaret.

April, 1927.

1 Friday. Nasty cold east wind blowing. Sam Spies was here and they chopped this forenoon. They were sawing wood this afternoon and Noah Miller helped.

2 Saturday. Clear, cold & windy. Walter & Vernon took Princess 7th to Elmira today. He sold her to Hy. Hedrich for 6 cts. a lb.

3 Sunday. Cloudy & windy. We went to church & S. School this afternoon. Charles Miller and Walter Adler visited us this forenoon.

4 Monday. Cloudy & windy. Sam Spies was sawing wood here today. Walter Adler and Ezra Maurer helped. Bert came up with Ezra and they were here for dinner and supper. Callers - Mr. Cromar, Jos. Gingrich, Gordon Bonn and Eldon Wagner, Art and Joe Tutton.

April, 1927.

5 Tuesday. Showery & drizzly. We butchered a pig here for Art. Tutton. Our company tonight - Mr. & Mrs. Wesley Miller, Mr. Noah Miller, Charles Miller, Walter Adler, Cornelius Klassen.

6 Wednesday. Clear & windy this morning. Showers this p.m. Ella did her washing. Walter attended the Annual Business Meeting at the church this morning. Callers tonight - Noah Miller, Clarence, Lloyd & Russell Farncombe.

7 Thursday. Clear and cold. Walter shipped hogs at Elmira. Lincoln Weaver came down with his team and wagon and he and Vernon were drawing wood into the woodshed till dinner-time. Ella boiled soap this afternoon.

8 Friday. Cold. Nasty east wind. The men finished filling up the woodshed with wood. Vernon & Ella walked over to Reists' tonight and had some taffy.

April, 1927.

9 Saturday. Cold east wind. The men put a new piece of fence between the lawn & raspberry patch

10 Sunday. Cold & windy. We went to Woolwich church & S.S. this morning. Our company for dinner were - Mr. & Mrs. Lincoln Weaver Mildred, Doris and Howard. Walter Adler and Cornelius Klassen were here for supper. Vernon & Ella went to practice tonight.

11 Monday. Beautiful spring day. Walter went to Elmira Monthly Fair today and took 25 dozen eggs down to Sieling's to hatch. Ella did her washing this morning. This p.m. she boiled soap, cleaned the yard. Vernon helped to clean up the garden and had a bonfire

12 Tuesday. Cloudy. Emerson came up this morning and Ella went down to Grandpa's for the day to help paper the parlor Rachel, Edna, Mildred, Doris & Howard went too. The men worked at the garden fence and pulled out the {currant bushes?}.

April, 1927

13 Wednesday. Clear, cold & windy Vernon was plowing this afternoon. Ella dug along the new garden fence and planted some rose bushes. Walter's callers - Geo. Bender, Ed. Bolender and Sam Thompson and Mr. Dunn.

14 Thursday. Clear and not quite as cold as yesterday. Walter shipped hogs at Elmira. Vernon took 5 pigs and a calf down to Elmira this morning They worked at the garden fence this afternoon. David Horst visited us this p.m. and Noah, Esther & Ruth Miller tonight.

15 Friday. Good Friday. Fine day. The men plowed the garden. Vernon brought a bouquet of hepaticas from the bush today. Ella was at a quilting at Grandpa's today and Vernon & Walter came down for supper too. Lawrence Doering of Chesterville, Ont. took us by surprise today and was here for dinner. He & Walter went to Quinn's sale for awhile this p.m.

April, 1927.

16 Saturday. Mild. Some showers. Vernon was cultivating. Walter harrowd the garden. After supper we went over to King's to see the new baby and up to Henderson's store.

17 Sunday. Easter Sunday. Fine warm day. We went to practice this morning, to S. School and church this p.m. and to the Easter entertainment tonight. Mr. & Mrs. Israel Shoemaker and family and Mr. and Mrs. Norman Snyder called here this afternoon.

18 Monday. Very warm & windy Vernon was cultivating this morning This p.m. he was plowing and Walter harrowed. Ella dug around the perennials and planted some sweet cherry trees. Vernon went to a party at Edmund. Schwindt's tonight.

Born - On April 9, to Mr. & Mrs. Elmo King, a daughter, Helen Joyce. Born - On April 11, to Mr. & Mrs. L.H. Doering Chesterville Ont. a son, Charles Ellis.

April, 1927.

19 Tuesday. Very warm & sultry. Ella was raking the plowed part of the garden today. Vernon was plowing. Walter took 4 head of fat cattle to Elmira this forenoon and was harrowing this p.m. Walter & Ella went to a Concert at the Regent Theatre at Elmira tonight It was given by local talent and was very good. There was a heavy thunderstorm accompanied by wind & rain tonight.

20 Wednesday. Clear, cold & windy. Vernon was plowing. Noah Miller visited Walter this morning and they went to Lambke's sale this p.m. Ella did her washing.

21 Thursday. Cool & breezy. Walter shipped hogs at Elmira. Tonight Walter, Ella & Vernon went to the Mennonite church at Elmira where a chorus composed of singers from Kitchener, Waterloo & Elmira rendered an Easter Cantata entitled "Jesus Lives" which was very good.

22 Friday. Cloudy & cold. Snowflurries. Vernon went down to Schwindt's for some lilac bushes this morning and got some spruce seedlings at Earl's and we planted them and a Balm of Gilead this afternoon. Vernon was cultivating this p.m. Walter was cleaning seed grain. Noah Miller visited him this morning.

23 Saturday. Cold & windy. Vernon was cultivating all day. Walter was spreading Manure.

24 Sunday. Cold & cloudy. Snowflurries. Walter Ella & Vernon went to S. School this morning and as Mr. Bean was away to Conference at Sebringville we had prayer-meeting instead of preaching service. This afternoon we went up to Grandpa Krauter's and stayed for tea

25 Monday. Cold & windy. We cleaned the store room today. The men started tearing down Mogk's house today. Wesley & Esther called tonight.

26 Tuesday. Cold & showery. The men were working at the old house Grandpa Krauter came up here this afternoon and he is helping them. Mrs. Louis Miller and Mrs. Chas. Koepke visited Ella this afternoon. Our visitors tonight - Mr. & Mrs. Noah Miller, Orpha and Margaret.

27 Wednesday. Cold & windy. The men worked at the old house. Vernon was sowing oats this afternoon. Ella did her washing. {blotted out} Weaver was here for dinner and grafted some trees.

28 Thursday. Fair and not quite as cold as yesterday. Walter shipped hogs at Elmira. They started putting up the chicken house today. Vernon was sowing this afternoon. Ella cleaned three rooms upstairs. Walter Snider died very suddenly at Conestogo last night. Peter Mattusch and Oscar Vogt died at Elmira.

2 Monday. Lovely day and warmer. Ella did her washing. Walter went to Elmira this morning to pay the interest Vernon was cultivating this a.m. This afternoon they worked at the chicken house. Esther & Wesley called for some eggs. Tonight Walter went to a finance meeting at Ed. Bender's.

3 Tuesday. Cloudy with showers The men finished the brooder house and started the fire today. Ella dug a piece in the garden yesterday and planted some onions. Today she was doing up some apples.

4 Wednesday. Showery Morning Fine this afternoon. Walter dug a bed in the garden and Ella planted onions, beets, carrots, beans, nigella and marigold also planted her dahlia roots. This p.m. Vernon plowed and Walter was sowing grain. Noah Miller and Allen Wagner visited us tonight.

5 Thursday. Cloudy & rather cool. Walter shipped hogs at Elmira this a.m. and was sowing Mammoth Cluster Oats, fertilizer and grass seed this p.m. Vernon was plowing. Ella planted the early potatoes in the garden, also her peas. Walter brought home 210 chicks from Elmira.

6 Friday. Fair and cool. Walter was sowing and Vernon was plowing. Vernon dug the two flower beds at noon. Walter went to Creekbank and to choir practice tonight. Callers - Geo. Snider and T.B. Meyer.

7 Saturday. Fine and warmer. The men were plowing today and Vernon harrowed tonight after tea.

16 Monday. Cold & showery. Walter took a load of chopping to Floradale this morning. This p.m. he went over to Noah Miller's. Ella transplated some cabbage, cauliflower and aster plants. Our company tonight were - Mr. & Mrs. Earl Miller and Sam Bird.

17 Tuesday. Changeable. Rain tonight. Walter brought 3 loads of gravel from Louis Miller's. Vernon was gang plowing. Ella did her washing and planted her gladioli bulbs. Orpha Miller visited Ella this afternoon.

23 Monday. Rained last night and rained all day. Miserable weather Walter was gadding all day, had his dinner at Koepke's and supper at Sim Weaver's. Ella did her washing this morning and canned rhubarb this afternoon.

24 Tuesday. Miserable drizzly day. We were at a wiener supper and ice cream feed at Israel Shoemaker's tonight and had a very good time.

25 Wednesday. Heavy showers this morning. Clear and windy p.m. Started to rain again tonight. Walter & Ella went to Kitchener today and had their dinner at Edith's. Walter went to choir practice tonight.

26 Thursday. Cloud, cold & drizzly. Walter shipped hogs this morning, had his dinner at Norman Sniders and helped dig sewers at the parsonage this p.m. Ella did her ironing and varnished the linoleum.

27 Friday. Clear, cool fine day. Frost last night. Grandpa Krauter came up this morning and Grandpa Maurer after dinner and they helped at the garage. Ella cleaned the kitchen.

28 Saturday. Fair and warmer. Grandpa Maurer came up here again this morning and they were working at the garage. Grandpa Krauter went home tonight. Ella sowed everlastings, zinnias, gaillardias and Oriental mixture.

29 Sunday. Cloudy. Cold east wind. We went to church & S.School this afternoon. Our company for tea - Mr & Mrs. Otto Miller and Norman. Otto took us all for a ride in his new McLaughlin.

30 Monday. Changeable. The men plowed and worked up the mangel ground. Ella hoed in the garden and planted corn, beans, muskmelons, pumpkins, sunflowers, hollyhocks, annual chrysanthemums, columbines, canterbury bells and four o'clocks.

31 Tuesday. Cold, windy & drizzly. Walter sowed the mangels today. Ella worked in the garden and planted beets, radishes, cucumbers, watermelons and soup beans also calendula and dwarf hollyhucks. Grandpa Krauter came here tonight. Vernon plowed this p.m.

6 Monday. Fine day. Ella did her washing and cleaned up the washhouse. The men fixed the pasture field fence this morning and this p.m. Walter was drawing manure and Vernon plowed.

7 Tuesday. Fine day. Ella cleaned the dairy, boiled Grandpa's soap for the third time and transplanted her stocks. The men were drawing manure and plowing. Otto Miller & Norman visited us last night and Noah Miller tonight. Walter & Jno. Stange spent the evening at Jno's place.

8 Wednesday. Wonderful morning. Sultry and thunderstorms all day. Ella went to the District S. S. Convention at North East Hope with Ed. Bender's and had her dinner & suppoer at the Jno. Mohr's. We came home in a succession of thunderstorms but managed to keep dry.

19 Sunday. Cloudy & drizzly. We went to S. School this morning. Vernon had his dinner at Edmund Scwindt's. Mr & Mrs. Colson Jefferson, Roy & Lois were here for tea. We had our Children's Day service tonight.

20 Monday. Sultry & threatening. The men planted 6 rows of potatoes and sowed some of the corn. Tonight we went to the Township S.S. Convention at Conestogo with Louis Miller's. Walter sang in two quartettes with Charlie Miller, Angus, Weber and Norman Snyder.

21 Tuesday. Sultry & threatening. The men finished planting the corn and potatoes.

28 Tuesday. Lovely warm day. The men finished plowing the buckwheat ground. We went to the Alma Presbyterian Garden Party tonight. Bob Wilson and his Co. rendered the programme. Fred Hodgson of Tavistock, champion boy orator of Canada, gave an address on "Canada." The programme was excellent.

29 Wednesday. Hot weather. The men were working up the buckwheat ground. Walter went to choir practice tonight.

30 Thursday. Hot & sultry. Walter shipped hogs at Elmira this morning. Vernon harvested the buckwheat ground and they sowed the buckwheat this afternoon. Walter went to a finance meeting at church tonight.

3 Sunday. Cloudy & cool. We went to Woolwich S.S. and church this morning and this afternoon we went to Heidelberg Children's Day Services. We were at Grandpa Krauter's for tea. Aunt Barbara (Alliance, Alberta), Aunt Fanny (Rochester, N.Y.), Aunt Lizzie (Hamilton) and Aunt Katie (Heidelberg) were there also a host of other company from Detroit, Hamilton, Naperville, etc.

10 Wednesday. Lovely day. The men were plowing. We all went up to Sim. Weaver's tonight as the boys wanted to see Aubrey.

4 Sunday. Beauitful cool day. Walter & Vernon went to church & S.S. this morning. Our company - Mr. & Mrs. Thomas Young. Ethel, Helen, Clifford & Donald all of Durham, Ont. We were at Grandpa Maurer's for tea.

5 Monday. Lovely & cool. The men helped to thresh at Eph. Snyder's all day. Ella & Pearl went to Toronto today with Bert & Charlie. Milton took us down to Hilliard's and we had our dinner there and had our supper at the Sanitary Cafe on Yonge St. We went to the Uptown Threatre tonight. "Hula".

6 Tuesday. Fine & warmer. Ella & Pearl spent the day at the Exhibition.

7 Wednesday. Hazy & warm. We took a boat trip to Lewiston and came back to HIlliard's tonight.

8 Thursday. Lovely day. Ella came home from Elmira with Walter today. Vernon was drawing manure. Enoch & Irwin Schneider visited us tonight.

9 Friday. Fair. The men finished drawing out manure.

10 Saturday. Hot. Shower at noon. The men were gang plowing.

11 Sunday. Fine cool day. We went to church & S. School this a.m. Mr. & Mrs. Clayton Scheifele, Bruce & Glen were here for dinner. Mr. & Mrs. Addison Reist, Percy, Edgar, Alma, Vera & Adella Reist were here for supper. Mr. & Mrs. Oscar Schierholtz called after supper also Eph. Snyder's.

12 Monday. Beautiful day. Walter went to the Elmira Monthly Fair and got his fertilizer at Alma. Vernon were rolling & harrowing. Our company for tea - Mr. & Mrs. Jacob Maurer and Miss Clara Klemmer of Clifford, Ont and Lillian Maurer & Harry B. Williams of Detroit, Mich.

13 Tuesday. Lovely day. Walter got his wheat at Grandpa Maurer's and stayed for dinner. Our company for tea - Mrs. Arthur Cragg and Julia of Fergus, Ont.

14 Thursday Wednesday. Sultry. Walter sowed the wheat. We went to the opening of the new wing at the Creamery tonight. The programme was good and the ice cream excellent.

17 Saturday. Sultry. Walter took a load of grist to Floradale. Vernon went fishing with Colson & Ray. They were all here for tea.

19 Monday. Cold & windy. Showers We went to the School Fair at Alma this afternoon. We went to Otto Miller's for supper & the evening.

10 Monday. Fair and cool. Ella washed this morning and the men plowed. This afternoon we went to Kitchener to do some shopping and had our tea with Mrs.Hoffman at Bridgeport.

17 Monday. Cold & clear. Ella did her washing. Walter cut the rest of the flax. This pm. Vernon took a load of flax to Floradale and Walter took grist. Ella dug her gladiolus and dahlia roots.

18 Tuesday. Fine. Walter took a load of flax to Floradale this a.m. Vernon plowed all day. Walter & Ella took Annie Schneider along to the County S.S. Convention. We had our tea at Angus Weber's.

19 Wednesday. Cold & windy. Walter & Noah Miller went to Guelph this morning and Noah was here for dinner. Walter took another load of flax to Floradale this p.m. Vernon plowed

20 Thursday. Cold & windy. Walter shipped hogs. Ella went as far as Milton Eix's with him. and they were there for dinner. Lincoln, Edna, Doris, Howard, & Lila were here for dinner & supper.

21 Friday. Cloudy, cold & windy. The men topped the mangels. Walter & Ella went to League & practice

22 Saturday. Fine and milder. The men brought in the mangels 8 big loads today.

23 Sunday. Beautiful day. We had our S.S. Rally & Harvest Home at Woolwich and the church was crowded. Bishop Seager of La Mars, Iowa and Rev. Guenther of Algeria spoke. The Bridgeport Orchestra furnished the music. Our company for tea - Mr. & Mrs Israel Shoemaker, Ella, Angus, Ivan, Clarence & Cecil, Mr. & Mrs. Ezra Maurer, Mr. & Mrs. Norman Snider, Mr. & Mrs. Wm. Hahn and Isaac Lachman.

24 Monday . Wonderful day. Ella did her washing. The men were topping turnips.

25 Tuesday. Another perfect day. The men brought in 8 loads of turnips today. Ella was at a rag bee at Ezra Maurer's today.

26 Wednesday. Fine and mild. The men brought in 9 loads of turnips today. Ella cleaned three rooms upstairs and made mincemeat.

27 Thursday Fine and summery. Walter shipped hogs. They brought in 7 loads of turnips. We had the beef ring meeting here tonight and a fairly good crowd.

28 Friday. Fine and somewhat cooler. They brought in the last load of turnips. Vernon & Walter butchered a pig at Henry Atkinson's.

29 Saturday. Cloudy. Vernon plowed. Walter helped to thresh at Elmo King's for a few hours

30 Sunday. Cloudy & raw. We went to S. School and prayer meeting. Our company for dinner - Mr. & Mrs. Leon Wagner, Eldon, Ruby and Gordon Wagner and Norman Miller. We went to the League Rally tonight. Ruth Schwindt won the oratorical contest. Laura Miller & Irvin Schneider also spoke. Rev. G. Epp of Cleveland, Ohio gave an excellent address.

31 Sunday. Fair and Milder. Walter helped finish Elmo's threshing this morning. Vernon plowed. Elam Weber and his brother were our callers tonight.

1 Tuesday. Warm summery day. Walter took chopping to Floradale and hides to Elmira. Some of our friends had a birthday party for Walter here tonight. 7 Monday. Clear and very cold. We went down to Edith's at Kitchener for Thanksgiving dinner. Walter took Ella to Grandpa Krauter's and she is staying a few days.

8 Tuesday. Cloudy and cold. Grandma & Ella cleaned her upstairs today and moved into the winter kitchen.

9 Wednesday. Cloudy & cold. Grandma and Ella cleaned the parlor, bedroom and storm windows today. Lucinda Brubacher was married yesterday.

10 Thursday. Cloudy & milder. Rain Grandma & Ella did the washing Walter came up to Grandpa's and Ella came home with him. Vernon plowed.

26 Saturday. Showers. The men plowed Ella went to the market with Edith this morning and went out to Vic's at Bridgeport before dinner. Tonight Vic and Ella went to the Lyric Theatre and saw Tom Mix in "The Circus Ace".

5 Monday. Lovely day. Walter & Ella went to Kitchener and had their dinner and supper at Edith's. This afternoon we went to the Capitol Theatre and saw "Ben-Hur" and it was wonderful.

8 Thursday. Very cold & stormy. Walter went to Elmira in the car. Vernon took 3 pigs out in the wagon.

10 Saturday. Fair. We butchered 2 pigs here today, one for Mr. Brent and one for Kennedy Bros. and Walter took them to Elmira this afternoon.

11 Sunday. Mild. Walter & Elva went up to Grandpa Krauter’s for dinner. Grandma is sick in bed. We went to Woolwich church & S. School this p.m. Harvey Reist was here for tea. Walter skinned a cattlebeast at Otto Miller’s and stayed for tea. We went to choir practice tonight.

12 Monday. Cloudy & raw. Ella washed. Walter went to Elmira and stayed all day. Vernon & Harvey Reist worked in the bush and Harvey was here for dinner and supper.

18 Tuesday. Mild and very foggy. We butchered 2 pigs here today for Alf. Shantz.

14 Wednesday. Fine, clear & windy. We butchered a big pig here today for Roy Norris. Ella was up at Lincoln's this p.m. helping to get ready for the sale.

15 Thursday. Cold east wind blowing Walter shipped hogs. Ella helped at Lincoln's all day. Lincoln had his sale today and a fairly good crowd.

22 Thursday. Fair. Walter shipped hogs at Elmira today. We all went to the Woolwich school concert tonight.

23 Friday. Snowing. Sam Spies brought his chopping outfit here before noon and was here for dinner and supper Jack Spies was here for supper too.

24 Saturday. Beautiful clear cold day. Walter took the chopping to Floradale and had his dinner at Chas. Bergman's Vernon feels sick today.

25 Sunday. Another fine day. We went down to Grandpa Krauter's for Christmas dinner in the car today. Emerson's and Lincoln's were all there too. We came home in the afternoon and Willard came home with us Tonight Walter & Ella went to the Floradale entertainment

27 Tuesday. Lovely day. Ella went to Heidelberg with Lincoln & Edna in Dad's car. We had our dinner & supper at Grandma's and went to Albert Scheifele's sale this afternoon. Tonight we were over at Otto Miller's as Walter helped to audit the school books.

28 Wednesday. Mild & dreary. Rained hard tonight. We butchered 2 pigs here for Norman's & Angus's and Norman, Edna, Angus, Ada were here all day. Harvey Reist & Vernon worked in the bush this afternoon and all day Tuesday.
