How Old Are You?
One day there came to the court of a king a gray-haired professor, who amused the king greatly. He told the monarch a number of things he never knew before, and the king was delighted. But finally he came to a point where the ruler wanted to know the age of the professor, so he thought of a mathematical problem. "Ahem!" said the king ; "I have an interesting sum for you; it is a trial in mental arithmatic. Think of the number of the month of your birth." Now the professor was sixty years old and had been born two days before Christmas so he thought of twelve, December being the twelfth month. "Yes," said the professor. "Multiply it by two," said the king. "Yes," "Add five." "Yes," answered the professor, doing so. " Now mulitply by fifty." "Yes." "Add your age." "Yes." "Subtract 365." "Yes." "Add 115." "Yes." "And now," said the king, "might I ask what the result is?" "Twelve hundred and sixty," replied the professor, wonderingly "Thank you," was the king's response. "So you wre born in December, sixty years go, eh? "Why, how in the world do you know?" replied the professor. "Why," replied the king, "from your answer 1260." "The month of your birth was the twelfth, and the last two figures give your age." "Ha, ha, ha!" laughed the professor. "Capital idea! I'll try it on the next person. It's a polite way of finding out people's ages." --Watchman.

The Secret of Peace and Strength.
Suppose that the Christian life, in its daily manifestation, should come to be marked and known by simplicity and happiness. Suppose that the followers of Jesus should really escape bondages to the evil spirits of avarice and luxury which infest and torment so much of our complicated, tangled, artificial modern life. Suppose that instead of increasing their wants and their desires, instead of loading themselves down on life's journey with so many bags and parcels and boxes of superfluous luggage and bric-a-brac that they are forced to sit down by the roadside and gasp for breath; instead of wearing themselves out in the dusty ways of ostentation and vain show, or embittering their hearts because they cannot succeed in getting into the weary race of wealth and fashion -- suppose instead of all this they should turn to quiet ways, lowly pleasures, pure and simple joys, "plain living and high thinking." Suppose they should truly find and show their happiness in the knowledge that God loves them and Christ died for them and heaven is sure, and so set their hearts free to rejoice in life's common mercies-- the light of the sun, the blue of the sky, the splendour of the sea, the peace of the everlasting hills, the song of the birds, the sweetness of flowers, the wholesome savor of good food, the delights of action and motion, the refreshment of sleep, the charm of music, the blessings of human love and friendship --rejoice in all these without fear or misgiving, because they come from God, and because Christ has sanctified them all by his presence and touch -- suppose, I say, that such a revival of the joy of living in Christ and working for Christ should silently sweep over the Church in the twentieth century. What would happen? Great would be the peace of her children. Greater still would be their power.

Teach her that one hundred cents make a dollar. Teach her to wear a simple muslin dress and to wear it like a queen. Teach her her how to sew on buttons, darn stockings and mend gloves. Teach her to dress for health and comfort as well as for appearance. Teach her to arrange the parlor and the library. Teach her to love and to cultivate flowers. Teach her to say no and mean it: and to say yes and stick to it. Teach her to have nothing to do with intemperate and dissolute young men. Teach her to pay regard to the character of those she would associate with and not to how much money they have. Teach her to have a place for everything and to put everything in its place. Teach her that music is an elevating and delightful accomplishment and should not be neglected if there is money enough to give her instruction in it. Teach her that the more she lives within her income the more she will save and the further away she will keep from privation when reverses come. Teach her to take advantage of every opportunity for reading, selecting such books as will give her suitable mental training and practical information for a good and useful life. Teach her that modesty is the most attractive of all qualities, and that loud talking or laughter in public not only disgusts everybody that hears it, but will eventually destroy her self respect. Teach her a high sense of personal dignity, so that she may regard familiarity of touch or speech as an unpardonable affront to her womanhood.
