Thursday, 6

Done chores and finished drawing out manure. Then went back to bush and cut three logs. Beautiful bright day milder.

Friday, 7

I a done chores. Brock to Moorefield with 7 pigs. At lunch in afternoon cutting logs. Brock took mother to nie train. She gone to Guelph. Beauiliful bright day.

Saturday, 8

Done chores and chopping. Back ro bush and put on a load of logs. Brock took them to town and brought home the lumber. Da spilled ashes then went to bed about five. Feeling very misreable. Nellie telephoned to say mother was sick with the cold. Brock to town at night. Cold last wind. Started to chain again about twelve o'clock.

Very stormy morning but milder. A great quantity of snow fell. Wind from the west after dinner. Da some better.

Ploughing in corner field. Very {sueliy?} day, Slams going around all day. A heavy rain about five.


Friday, 6

Ploughing in corner field. Mr. Ritcher from moorefield here to see back windmill in afternoon. Quite a shower in afternoon. Sultry.

Saturday, 7

Finished ploughing corner field in forenoon. Cultivating turnip ground in afternoon. We to town at night. Serald here for dinner. A little cooler but looking like rain at times.

Sunday, 8

Brock to church at night. Heavy rain about noons. Thunder & lightening.

Thursday, 12

Done chores and sheared 24 sheep. Mrs. W. Ewing and Loyd here in afternoon. Beauiliful day. Cool breeze.

Friday, 13

Cultivating and rolling corn ground in forenoon. Brock got foshes drill and sowed it in afternoon. Harrowed it. Very hot sullry day. A little thunder shower about six.

Saturday, 14

Cultivating and harrowing rest of corn field. Brock chopped a little. He and I to town at night. Fine and warm.

Sunday, 15

Brock to church at night. Fine and hot.

Monday, 30

Men doing roadwork with two teams. Mother took me to train. Going to Elora. Fine and hot.

Tuesday, 1 DOMINION DAY (Dominion)

Doing roadwork. Brock to town at night. Very hot.

Wednesday, 2

Ploughing rape ground on other place. Mr. John Templeton brought me home this morning and stayed for dinner. Very hot and calm. Had to dip water for young cattle at low well. Mrs. Jas Mc Ewing died this morning.

Cementing in front if barn door in morning. Brock chopping in afternoon. Da hoeing in gardens.mHoeing mangels after tea. Over to Harshels with some beans. Fine but windy.

Men hoeing and scuffling turnips. Mr. Henderson called in evening. Fine and warm.

Men hoeing and scuffling turnips. I to kitchener with Mr.Henderson. Brock to Goldstone garden party at night. Dull and misty in morning but cloudy all day.

Friday, 1

Hoeing and scuffing turnips. Brock to moorefield in morning with 3 pigs. Lionel Hamilton here for tea. Fine day.

Saturday, 2

Finished hoeing then on scuffing. Brock brought up sheep and divided them. Chopped some in afternoon. He & I to town to night. Fine and warm.

Sunday, 3

Brock to church. Dull and a little shower about five.

Monday, 4 Men started to dig ditch on other place. Took team after dinner. Very hard and stony. Warm and sultry.

Tuesday, 5 Working at ditch all day with team. Very hot & sultry. A little sprinkle about five.

Wednesday, 6 Men working at ditch all day. I to town in morning to meet Lillian. Mother and she up to Ray's in afternoon. Misty & hot in morning. Brightened by noon but stil hot.

Men working at ditch all day. Brock, mother and Lillian at Presley. garden party. Cloudy in morning but brightened up.

Friday, 8


Men working at ditch all day. To Pike Lake in afternoon with Ross & Florence. Fine and warm.

Saturday, 9


Got out binder and started harvest. Cut little patch of road on other place and barley on other place. We to town at night. Fine and warm.

Sunday, 10


Brock & I to Chatsworth with Harry. Rig is up too. Fine and warm.

Monday, 11 Cutting grain on other place. Do shocking. Joe Kaplan here for 4 bags of potatoes @ 1.75. Fine and warm.

Tuesday, 12 Finished cutting on other place at noon. Then started in field next bruh and Jack's line fence in afternoon. Fine and breezy. Stanley Ellis's barn burned. Windmill set it on fire.

Wednesday, 13 Finished cutting down by Jack's line fence in forenoon. Then started back of maple tree in afternoon. Brock & I to town at night. Emerson Walker's barn burned. Gasoline engine set it on fire. Fine but very windy.

Thursday, 21 Went back to cut the wheat but it came on rain about nine so had to stop. Rained very hard most of forenoon. Tried cutting again after dinner but came on rain. Brock to town at night. I Took Lillian to morning train.

Friday, 22 Finished ploughing strip for rape and cut the rest of wheat in forenoon. Sowed rape after dinner and got in three loads of grains. Mother up to Harry's in afternoon. Fine drying day.

Saturday, 23 Drawing in all day from other place barley and oats. Brock & I to town at night. Fine but a little cloudy.

Sunday, 24 Brock to church at night. Cloudy in morning but a fine day.

Monday, 25

Finished drawing in from other pace about ten then drawing barley from back of barn and mixed grain. Uncle Will come on night train. Quite showery in morning. Fine and windy in afternoon. Shower in evening & cloudy.

Tuesday, 26

Drawing in all day from back at Roy's line fence. Misting at times in forenoon. High wind in afternoon. Dr. Mc Gregor here.

Wednesday, 27

Drew in five loads in morning then fixing gaps & chopping. Making a ladder in afternoon. Quite heavy showers at times. Too wet to draw in.

LABOR DAY (Dominion) Monday, 1

Working at windmill in forenoon at the ditch in afternon. Brock over to borrow Hershel's pipe vice. I took Uncle Will to morning train. Fine day.

Tuesday, 2

Men working at ditch all day. Grace & I to twon in afternoon. Fine day.

Wednesday, 3

Digging ditch on other place. Brock, Grace & I to town. Fine and warm. Mr. Thompson got 1/2 bu. of clover seed.

Digging ditch on other place. Grace here for tea. Hershel and Sadie here in evening. Fine and warm.

Digging ditch on other place. Fine and warm. Grace & I down in morning for fruit.

Digging ditch. Brock went to moores threshing about three o'clock. Brock Grace and I to town. Fine and warm, breezy.

Brock, Grace & I to Presby. church at night. Grace here. Windy and very hot.

Brock at moores threshing for a coupple of hours in morning. at ditch rest of day. Grace & I down to Mc Ewings in evening. Fineand very warm high wind.

Tuesday, 9

Digging ditch all day. I took Grace to noon train. She gone to {Haronew?}. Quite dull and smoky all day. a little like rain.

Wednesday, 10

Digging ditch all day. Mrs. Brown and miss Ritch here in afternoon. Brock to town at night. Quite dull and looking like rain. Misty from about five o'clock.

Digging ditch all day. Mother took me to morning train to go to London. Fine morning but a shower about noon.


Friday, 12

Finished ditch in forenoon. Brock at Wilmott's threshing in afternoon and at Hershels. Dr. Drew wood out of old orchard. Fine day.

Saturday, 13


Brock at Hods threshing until about three o'clock then chopping. Da stabled to cut corn. Brock to town at night. Fine day

Sunday, 14

Mr. & Mrs. Thompson brought me home in afternoon. Brock to church at night. Harry Evans and Willa here in evening.

Monday, 15

Da and Brock at Jack Walkeys threshing until about ten. Ground the binder knife and cleaning pens. Cutting corn after diner. A little shower in forenoon very fine afternoon and evening.

Tuesday, 16

Cutting corn all day. Brock at Harry's threshing from eleven until four. Fine bright day.

Wednesday, 17

Cutting corn until about ten. Then Brock started to cut the millet. Da cutting corn. Mother & I to town in afternoon. Fine and a cold wind. Front at night.

Cutting corn all day. Brock to twon at tight. Beautiful day.

Friday, 19

Finished cutting corn early in forenoon then shocking the millet finished it after dinner and opening up rest of gaps on other place. Mr. Stirling drove Clara and Joyce over. They come to dinner with Mrs. & Mrs. Nielson. Misty in morning. Quite a heavy shower after dinner and again about five.

Men trying to fix back windmill pump. Working at it all day. Mother & Clara to town in afternoon. Brock & I down at night. Fine and very hot.

Raining all day. Very heavy at times.

Monday, 29

Drawing out manure. Brock helping Mr. Burgess put in culvert from three o’clock.Over to Oakes & Turnbull’s in the evening. Rather milky in morning. Dull and cool.

Tuesday, 30

Cleaning ditch on this place down by bush. Ross & Eldwin helping in afternoon. Raining at times a little all day. Colder to warm evening. Dull.

Wednesday, 1

Working at ditch down by bush. Cleaning out tiles. Brock down to Bayda in forenoon with pig.We at show in afternoon. Band to the concert. Cool but a bright afternoon.

Ploughing on barley ground on other place in forenoon. Drawing millet in afternoon. 5 loads. Beautiful warm day. High wind in afternoon.

Friday, 3

Ploughing in forenoon. Finished drawing in millet in afternoon. A little shower in evening last night and wet. Foggy in morning but brightened and was very warm.

Saturday, 4

Finished ploughing barley ground on other place in morning. Cultivated part of it in afternoon. We to town at night. Fine and very warm.

Sunday, 5

Brock to town at night. Raining and dull all day. Thunder & lightning about six o’clock.

October 1919

Monday, 6

Started to plough at home this side of ditch and ploughing all day. Rather dull and cloudy in morning but turned out a bright day.

Tuesday, 7

Ploughing this side of ditch. Mother & I to town in afternoon. Fine but very cold wind.

Wednesday, 8

Ploughing on barley ground. Started about ten o’clock. Brock & I to Arthur show concert with Beth. Beautiful bright day. Finished this side of ditch in forenoon.

Thursday, 16

Unloaded corn. Da levelled clay along by ditch they ploughed in field west. Jack & Brock cleaning pens and ploughing until about five then at Watt’s threshing. I to town in morning for gasoline. Showery early. Then a heavy dull mist about noon. Dull and raw. Brock to town at night.

Friday, 17

Brock at Watt’s threshing until about 3 p.m. Da ploughing in forenoon and drawing in corn in afternoon. Fine bright day.

X Saturday, 18

Drawing in corn. Brock helping until noon then at Elwin’s threshing on Bell farm. We to town at night. Fine but cool.


Sunday, 19

Brock to church at night. Rather dull but a nice evening.

Monday, 20

Da and Brock drawing in corn. Da over to vote. Brock to town at night to hear returns of election. Bright but cool. Mr. Henderson here in evening.

Tuesday, 21

Brock at Elwin’s threshing until 4 p.m. then chopping. Da ploughing stubble rest of Jack’s. Showers in night and early morning brightened and was a fine day. Prince of Wales visited Guelph.

Wednesday 22,

Da ploughing all day on stubble rest Jack’s. Brock ploughing until evening. Struck out some {fine?} corner field. Fine and mild.

Thursday, 23

Brock ploughing in corner field all day. Da finished field rest of Jack’s at noon, then ploughing in corner field in afternoon. Roy, Georgie, Elwin, Ross & Rose here for supper. Beautiful warm day.

Friday, 24

Ploughing in corner field. Brock took me down to dance in town at night. Fine but hazy and looking like rain.

Saturday, 25

Started to plough but only just a short time when heavy rain started. Raining nearly all day. Brock chopping and choring. Ma came down for me this morning. Stayed with Beckie.

Sunday, 26

Brock to church at night. Dull and cloudy. Da over to Mc Isaacs in afternoon but they were away.

Ploughing in corner field. Dull and little squalls of rain and almost snow.

Ploughing in corner field. Finished about three o’clock and started to plough road behind low driving house. Terrible wind in forenoon, moderating in aft.

Wednesday, 29

Topping turnips and harrowing them out in forenoon. Brock chopped some. Drawing in turnips in afternoon. Mr. Elsworth of Alvins Harbor here all night. Fine bright day but cool wind.

Choring all day. Brock to Fred Wilson’s in afternoon. Ike Mc Leod here in forenoon. Very rainy day. Foggy to wards evening.

Friday, 31

Men ploughing sod back of low driving house. Brock to town at night. Ma took me to morning train. I going to Elora. A little rain at times & mild.

ALL SAINT'S DAY (Quebec) Saturday, 1

Finished ploughing sod behind low driving house in forenoon and taking in turnips in afternoon. Brock to town at night. I came home with him. Fine and colder.

Clara and Melielle came about eleven o’clock. Fine and bright.

Monday, 24

Men choring and tied up young cattle. Cleaned the pens and chopping. Drew in a load of corn. Heavy snow fall at times but not very cold.

Tuesday, 25

Done chores. Brock & I to town in morning. Cutting wood in afternoon. Mild, soft snow in morning.

Done chores. Drew up load of wood from back bush. Colder but fine.

December 1919

Monday, 1

Done chores and repairing box where boards were off. Chopping. Mr. Henderson, Janet and Mr. Dorkin here for tea. Blustery at times but not very cold.


Tuesday, 2

Done chores. Da brought up plough & got in corn. Brock over to see about lamp. We sawed and cleaned pens. Brock to town at night. Blustery at times and colder.

Wednesday, 3

Done chores and cutting wood. Fine but rather dull.

Done chores. Brock chopping in forenoon. Drawing up wood in afternoon. Mild and rather foggy.

Done chores. Brock down town for closet in afternoon. Drove to Goldstone in afternoon for duck drakes but got one at Illy’s. Mild and very dense fog.

Men choring and banking up north house windows. Very stormy day and cold.

Done chores in forenoon. Brock over to Hershel's to help with roof but the man never came. Drawing out manure in afternoon to Brock’s little orchard. Fine but cold. East wind nearly all day.

Done chores. Brock over helping Hershel with roof. Snowing until about five. Da stuffing big door in shed with straw in afternoon. We to town to concert but they didn’t have it. Mild and dull.

Saturday, 13

Done chores and chopping. Wilmot here for rooster. Brock at Hershel in afternoon. Da choring & cleaning pens. Cold and quite stormy at times

Sunday, 14

Brock to town at night. Stormy day and cold.

December 1919

Monday, 15

Brock choring. We picked 19 geese. Terrible stormy cold day. Ray here for gander and Stee to trade a goose. Don died to night. 12 yrs old.

Tuesday, 16

Choring and picked 7 more geese and dry picked 9 rock roosters in afternoon. Quite stormy at times but not so cold.

Wednesday, 17

Da done chores. Brock & I to town in morning to send geese to Guffors and Hunters. Brock to Arthur in afternoon with 15 geese and 7 chickens. Got 33 per lb. Fine but very sharp.

December 1919
