Wife & I stay at home all day. don't go to church. I don't feel well, out late last night at Wordens

Monday 3rd, Go to Tannery at 8 & remain all day. Pay Brown off in full to date.

This should be Tuesday the 4th

JANUARY MONDAY 3 1876

Get Buggy from {Waters?} & drive to StC to Draw at {SB?}. Make 2 Dfts on on TPH 1 at 54 ds & 1 at 64 ds for $1900 ca. Dis & stamps $65.34. I retain to apply on last months Expenditure $550.66 Send WPHe pr Ex5 $3184.00. & get Rx.{while Rx usually applies to prescriptions in the 20thc sense, here it appears to mean receipt} Don't have Bank Book it's in Toronto.

6 Wordon Comes back with msg get back at 5. Expenses $3.50, Caudy 40.

We all go to Catholic concert, Ada plays with Miss Allison, get home at 11. Wife tells me about Warren Claus's second daughter 15 years old having a baby son by Alex McNicken of Manitoba.

Get Telegram from C Parsons that In will be down on Train tonight Meet HM/n at 7. Then go to Cars & meet CP. We go home & sit till 12 1/2 P.M. talking. He says Brown goes to Toronto & offers to do {work?} in Brum House at 16 cts, per Hide

CP & I go to Tannery at 9. Bring meat at at Sandhos 60 cts.. meet Brown on our way down. Stay at Tannery till 2. Jim McFarland brings Hide pr 5 cts. I tell Jim about WS. We (CP + I) go at to dinner at 2. back at 4. Mills brings 56 Hides from S Cath. Takes over 25 Rolls 199 {Pds?} 297 {ga'pts} Harness to Car for TP & Co. & brings back 2 Ratio Japonica. We go to {Mrs Ketchams?} after that & stay till 11. go home & sit up till 1 am

CP & I go to Tannery at 9 1/2 get shipping bill of Campbells last 18 Rolls & CP takes it We take Cars to Chippawa meet Renson from Peplers then CP much pleased with my Sole Leat{Sole leather} back to Bridge. I pay for Horse $2.00. Dinner for CP & I $100. I take cars at 720 for home. Ticket 50 cents. Maud Watt & Lansing go to Buffalo & back today. Get Telegram from M {Grithin?} for 25 Hides

Go to Tannery at 8. Jim Sadler {begins?} north this am. in Parties place, at 100 pr.day. I pay JCScott his a/c {account} (private) against Tanning 1129+ take. Rx Pay ELonghurst last month a/c for Hicks $1219 Ship Cassels & Stinson 10 whole Hides 395 {leather?} out of 723{#} {symbol for pound weight} Gren Hide {Greenhide refers to the unprocessed hide of an animal, typically from cattle, that has been freshly removed from the animal and has not undergone any tanning or other chemical treatment} 34 cts on a/c night.

JANUARY FRIDAY 14 1876

go to Tannery at 8. meet Flint Currie by Seniors.store his face all sore & Eye Black. Ship to LJCampbell 100 Tanned hides 3608. the Inspected might bring $755# which gives 231$ over 1/2 or nearly 53 41/100 %. I get 3 sides out of the 33 {sds Sole Leat.{Sole leather} I sent to Chippewa to be roll'd, the 30 sds being sent to TP& Co. from Chippewa. I get no weights of it, Inspected weights of the 3 sds I get an 1/87 1/78 1/72 & the other 3 sds weigh 65½ #, or a little over 55 ½ %. Give old Burns $100 this am. Pay Geo A Clement $9 my a/c in full to date.

Mssr Ketcham goes to Buffalo with Cunningham today. he has been here 2 or 3 days.

Go to Tannery at 8 1/2. meet R Brewer. He goes to Toronto on Cars. Hugh & I put up the small Whistle beside the large one. I go up to dinner at 2 Enclose note for $114 to Lyman Bros. due 8th Apl next. GeoLonghurst brings Hide 43 xx 5½ cents. Pay G Wooding IOU P to rare $30.0 on a/c this a.m.

Sunshiny Lovely morning like April

Sacrament at Church today. Maria & I go. We find Baby quite sick on our return from Church. I go for Dr Anderson Mrs {Ketchum?} comes over & gives Baby some Homeopathy medicin. She is very sick all night

JANUARY MONDAY 17 1876

Baby no better. I go to Tannery I sell Dick Briggs 1 side Sole Leather 21 1/2 dollars. 33 cents $709. Sample He dont pay for it to day. wants to try it first. I get my Books ready & {bouchures or brochures?} to take to Toronto in the morning. go home at 6 1/2 P.M.

JANUARY TUESDAY 18 1876

Go to Tannery at 8 1/2. take cars for Toronto. & Tram to Bridge 50cts. Ticket to Toronto return 4.25. Stop over at Hamilton till 5 25 p.m. Call at Mc {Arthur's?}. he is not at home, see his foreman, & have talk about lea. I get dinner 50cts. Meet Donnelly on train also Irwin Boiler Maker. We take Pullman car 25cts. Arrive at Toronto at 7. Meet Mrs. Milloy at {American house?}. long talk with her. I don't go out anywhere. D Milloy & I sit & talk, till bed time.

JANUARY WEDNESDAY 19 1876

Get up at 7. go to Parsons at 9. they tell me they don't like Sole leat {Sole leather}. We have some words over it. I tell them it isn't 1/2 roll'd. I don't get much satisfaction form them. After dinner I go up to Court to hear the Clements trial. First go up to the Queens with Capt Dick to find Scadding. Have long talk with him. about the Tannery & a/c. He shows me a Breech loding Gun he wants me to take. price $100. In P.M. I go to Parsons & Rutledge & I try to get the Books straightened but dont accomplish it. Dick & Scadding come to Hotel to see me. I don't go out. Mrs. Milloy sick today. Willie wants me to go to his place to spend day but I decline. Parsons told me today I might get someone else to take place in Tannery.

JANUARY THURSDAY 20 1876

Don't get up till 8, go to TP & Co. store at 10 talk to Parsons about Lawders note due tomorrow. he won't advance any funds. Says we will take Stock on Feb 1st & {decides} after that I can draw what is coming to me. Call to see J.W.Fletcher at Blalles office. he is out, meet Cassels on the Street. Have talk with Sloan on Street about Belt-leat he says they cant afford to pay 38 cts, I take Cars at 3.15. P.M. for home. Donnelly meets me at train. Capt Dick waits down with me. We get home at 8. I find letter from TP& Co. Enclosing Cheque to Balance last months Exp.$ at Tannery for $109.18. I sign a Note of Accomodation at Toronto for them for $4500 blank date. I borrow $10 from TP& Co. to bring me home.


JANUARY FRIDAY 21 1876

Donnelly sents Horse & Buggy for me to go to StC. He cant go. sends Joe Gates to drive me. I meet Lawder in StC {St. Catharines} & tell him about Note due today, he goes with me to I Bank & renews his own note. I pay the {dis?} $8.25. I then talk with Crombie about last Gold {Dft}.& {Exc?} J McPhail tells me Ira Crombie returned to StC today. Lawder tells me the Sombra lot was advertized & sold for taxes again & he paid them. I get home at 2 P.M. & go to Tannery.

JANUARY SATURDAY 22 1876

Go to Tannery at 8. take Lunch & stay all day. Burk gets his 1st Car load of Pork down last night & hauls it to day. I give nothing (on TP & Co. TP & Cos cheque to change for $109.08, I lend J Murphy #20, & get his Rx I pay McCainchow $30 & 8 cts. got $13 before, making $4 & I pay them on a/c {?} Shingling & fixing my mothers house & take Rx. {Geo Longhenst brings?} & Hide 93$ at 5/cts.

JANUARY SUNDAY 23 1876

I go to Church this AM. Maria dont go. Baby not well yet. I dont go out again Worden calls in the Eveg sits awhile.

Uncle John & Son comes in on PM & Uncle John tells us of his troubles etc.

JANUARY MONDAY 24 1876

I go to Tanner at 8, take my lunch, & remain at Tannery all day. I make out list of all Leat. gone out of Tannery since 1st Feby. last to date, & show Uncle John this Eveg.

I pay C.Worden on a/c $12 this day

I enclose TP&Co. $10 this Amt I borrow'd from him when in Toronto last.

JANUARY TUESDAY 25 1876

I go to Tannery at 8. Call at Woodingtons for bal of money on TP&Co Cheque for $10918. I pay Woodington on a/c $16 & take Rx. I go over to Wordens house & pay him $12 in a/c. Then go to Tannery, & remain all day Capt. Grale calls in PM. & tells me about Old {Bruus?} T Mills draws 2 loads Hides over from other building

JANUARY WEDNESDAY 26 1876

Go to Tannery at 8. Tom Mills comes down & I ship McArthur 25 Tann'd Hides 7 06 $ & Mills brings Cases bags down from Express office. Anthony Hooley comes in PM, & works with Claus & Hugh & Jim fill up Glue Stock for F M lease Buffalo. I sell Soln Brooman 2 Damaged side Sole lea. 1790, 30 cts=525, {hr?} to pay me in Wood. Maple. Pawling from StC calls to see me about slides for Seunis machine belts says he gets 2½ cts accdly{accordingly} per ft. Burk draws up {Cars?} 2nd Car of Pork today

JANUARY THURSDAY 27 1876

The day is like a May day so warm. Go to Tannery at 8. Geddes sends his freight a/c in I telegraph TP&Co to Seed Cheque for Auil $3804.

I go up to dinner today,

I pay TM Rowland $350 amt of my Mothers a/c & take Rx.

Go to Tannery at 8. I begin counting Hides in vats today for Stock taking remain at Tannery all day.


JANUARY SATURDAY 29 1876

Go to Tannery at 8. Borrow 3800 from Woodington & Pay F Geddes freight ½ {2nd.?} Get letter from McAishin to ship some Hides. I telegraph him. Get cheque from TP&Co this Evig for $38. on a/c Freight. Wife pays Sandho in full to date for Meat & gets Rx.

very cold Stormy all day with Snow. Send Stock list this day to TP&Co with letter. Get letter from TP&Co, saying they could not sell leat in Montreal for more than 28 cts Rx mos. & only A Campbell at that & that Toronto Manufactures wont buy Sole Leat as they had Contracted with Tanners in States for {Oak?} Sole leat trimmed at 40 cts. _ {A?} Donnelly (W.G) gets 1 Bush Lime per Joe Gates 40cts. Jas Carnochan gets 2 Bush Lime Paid 80 cts. I Sadler get 4 cows tails 20 cts. none of which pays me, Jas Barry of SunBridge calls yesterday about Fleshings. I get letter from Case today about more Glue Stock.

Go to Tannery at 8½. Geo Watts comes to Tannery with me, & buys 1 sd Sole (Damaged) at 6 xx 27 cts, = $432, Paid

Have talk with H Carson about his Wages & tell him about TP&Co letter rc'd by one last night, that they Co. could only get offer from LJ Campbell for the Whole Hides of 28 cts 4 mos. Hugh agrees to take $10 per Week & no less, this does not include the agreement about watching. I go home at 7 P.M.

Cold stormy. Alex Swinton calls at house with his a/c $225. I pay him $125, on a/c. Mail letter to Barry & Sloan about leat & to E H Scadding. Car comes down last night with I suppose 10 Bbls O Extract in Bond, re'c Postal Card from C Tarble about it bring at 7 & {Eui?} & mail reply this A.M. telegraph this A.M. to Coll with CSRR Agt at Victoria about it, Make Bbl Soft Soap at tannery this P.M. Buy Post Stamp - 50 cts.

Get 383 Hides from {Strond?} Haul'd from Car to Tannery, 340 No 1 & 43 No 2, they overrun by Scale weight 1038# 6 / Mills hauls them 8 loads

Heavy Thunder Storm tonight

Go to Tannery at 7 & stay all day Begin putting in Extract this P.M. Mills hauls it over. Get telegram from Parsons that he will be over this Eveg on train. I make out a full statement of leat. sold for past 2 Years & make out profit on same. the 1st year we arranged 31 Hides pr week at 37 cts pr H. 2nd year 50 Hides pr week at 34

Meet CP at train we sit & talk till 12½. I show him Rutledges mistake of 1000. CP tells me they put {pieces?} of leat down to McArthur to 30 & Sold to LJ Campbell when there last week at 27 cts cash

Lovely spring morning,

Go to Tannery at 8½, Mis Haddock starts for Chicago, her Uncle sick, I send my cheque to Lyman Bros for $11934 to pay my note due on 19th, I pay H Paffards a/c $1525, A Daveys a/c $130, D Servos Coal a/c of Dec 29th $12960. H Paffard tells me they found where Uncle John had paid more into Bank than he gave himself Cr for viz: $17500 or thereabouts. I got letter from F.M. Case. I sleep down stairs tonight. I write JB Pluent about Tariff on Leat Uncle John pays one 80 a/ for Old Carnochan for 2 Bus Lime.

FEBRUARY TUESDAY 15 1876

Snowing a little & thawing

Go to Tannery at 8. Ian & Frank putting thro balance of 100 Hides & hanging up. Get out another Carboy of Acid this AM John Carnochan come & I pay him $5404 bal of his a/c against Tannery, & pay him $10 on House a/c, & take Rx for both, give wife $500 more this AM, making in all $18 out of this month's pay.

FEBRUARY WEDNESDAY 16 1876

Go to Tannery at 8. stay all day. Pay Uncle John $200 to pay on my Life Insurance & I sign Rx for the profits. I pay John Co Ball $4 for a Hide he left at Tannery sometime ago & take Rx.

FEBRUARY THURSDAY 17 1876

Go to Tannery at 8 & remain all day. In the Evig. {evening} go to Neelons meeting & stay till 11. Get Tickets for Wife & Ada to go to Buffalo return pay $330.


FEBRUARY FRIDAY 18 1876

Go to Tannery at 8. Write JR Plusub at Court Customs & Johnson about duties on O Extract & mail this PM. Wife & Ada go to Buffalo this AM. Get my Cheque cashed by H Paffard for $40. He pay me $38 & owes me $200 on it.

FEBRUARY SATURDAY 19 1876

Go to Tannery at 8. make out Statement & GeoWoods a/c & send to T.P.&Co. Worden calls at Tannery tells one {arrow points up to TP&C} Bank told him on Thursday last comeing from St Caths (Nomination day) that after the Election he was going to have me arrested again for Perjury. Parker brings 25 Bus Lime this Noon

Go to Tannery at 8. & remain all day. Pay Men this Eve'g. I pay C Hughs $150 & the 50 cts I gave him Sunday makes $200 Ive paid him. I engage him from Mch 1st at $750 per week to look after tanning & carry out my instructions. I tell Carson I've engaged him.
